Summerville University #3

Some Strings Attached

Rate this book
My best friend and I have a deal. One summer. One bed. One rule—no strings attached.

We’re complete opposites—he’s a brooding, sullen musician, I’m the frat boy football star. No matter how much he makes my heart race, it would never work.

Not only are my feelings one-sided, but Dylan doesn’t fit my vision of a picture perfect future…or my family’s.

But when a group trip to Europe starts with us sharing a room, there's things I can't ignore.

His pretty lips.

The yearning in his eyes.

The one bed we have to share.

I need to focus on my future and my family—but when he suggests a summer fling, lines are crossed. The deeper I go, the more I can't hide it anymore.

Summer is coming to an end…and our arrangement might have more than a few strings.

Some Strings Attached is a steamy college m/m romance and is the final book in the Summerville University series. Each can be read as a standalone, but is more fun when read in order. Guaranteed happy ending.

And with the resolution of Brad and Dylan's romance, this fun series comes to a close.

I love that Brad has had feelings for Dylan since they were first got to know one another and they have been simmering for 3 years. Dylan has always felt comfortable being himself around Brad and so on this summer trip to Europe, he realizes that his feelings may run deeper.

Over the course of the book, we see them go on an European adventure with their friends and stuff happens that is spoiler-y, so I'm not going to mention it .

I have enjoyed getting to know the 4 couples at SVU. Be sure to read the bonus novella & the bonus epilogues the author provides, especially the one for this book as it offers a glimpse into the future of all 4 couples!

This was an easy and pretty quick read. It's lighthearted in parts and emotional in others.

I liked the premise and the friend group. Brad and Dylan were cute and I felt like they belonged together early on. I really liked how gone Brad was for Dylan and I was really happy that he told him that early on, but then he let the doubts creep in and he cared so much about what everyone else will think about them being together. I will allow that they are young and figuring themselves out, but there was a part of this book where I wasn't a fan of Brad at all. I disliked how he went against every one of his instincts and then iced Dylan out. Dylan's home life isn't ideal and coupled with Brad's silence it hit him pretty hard(and me too, tears were shed). I felt like Brad should have grovelled more, but the grovelling he did was in a way that addressed the issues he had and showed Dylan that he's in it completely.

Some parts of this book were emotional, and while I didn't sob, tears were shed multiple times. I really liked the friend group and all the different dynamics.

All in all a good read, just be prepared to be mad at Brad for a bit.

Brad and Dylan are really cute together even though there was so miscommunication but Dylan deserves all the love Brad can give him.

Some Strings Attached is a well-written novel about a group of friends traveling across Europe during summer break. Eloquent, vivid, and descriptive writing paints a detailed picture of their daily activities, sights, and experiences, almost like a travel diary. An emotional drama that erupts between best friends Brad and Dylan adds tension to a simple plot.
Brad is a popular and aspiring football player from a loving and supportive family. Dylan is his opposite. He is an artistic introvert, musician, skater, and loner from a dysfunctional family. Despite their differences, they are best friends and secretly attracted to each other from the start of their friendship. During their trip to Europe, they start a relationship, unable to resist their feelings and attraction.
The main focus of the story is on Brad and his fear of how his relationship with Dylan would affect his image, family, and career. His insistence on keeping the relationship secret, and his doubts about the social acceptance of their relationship because of Dylan’s social status, unique personality, and troubled family, may make Brad appear indecisive and self-centered. According to Brad: "Every time I thought about it, and every time I thought I wanted to just be open with it, then I’d think about my family and the more distant future. If all the plans came to a head and I was playing football professionally, if I was living this ideal life my parents wanted for me…where did Dylan fit into the picture?"

The book is a well-written tale of friendship, love, and the importance of owning and correcting mistakes. I wish Dylan would receive more attention, especially regarding his troubled family relationships. Giving more context to his life would greatly improve the dynamic and engagement of the story.

What to Expect:
- An opposites attract, friends to lovers romance trope
- Skillful, descriptive, and detailed writing
- No cliffhanger

What Not to Expect:
- Dark drama with angst, tension, and action
- Easy-to-read, heartwarming, and engaging story
- Complex characters, emotions, or topics

Three couples and two best friends celebrate the summer before their final year of college by going on a European vacation. Dylan and Brad have been best friends for years, so sharing a bed doesn't seem like a big deal...until the sexual tension becomes too much for them to resist.

I haven't read the first two books in this series, but I saw the description for this book and it was such a treasure trove of some of my favourite tropes that I just couldn't resist and I decided to leap into the series in the final instalment anyway. It works well enough as a standalone--I could tell that there was more to the stories of the other couples on the vacation, but it wasn't distracting to the Brad/Dylan coupling. I am curious, however, whether reading those other books would have given me more of an appreciation for their friendship because even though they have been best friends for years, there seem to be many unshared secrets between them. I found it a bit odd that Brad seemed to be so in the dark about Dylan's home life and his problems with his dad. I would have expected a little more familiarity between them by this point.

There was a bit of angst in this, with Dylan's father being very emotionally distant and functionally absent after the double tragedy of his wife leaving and then his eldest son running away from home. There was a fair few mentions of Frankie and how he was just gone one day and left this gaping hole in Dylan and his dad's life, so I was really hoping to learn something about where he went and maybe see a reunion of some kind, but unfortunately there was no resolutions there. That was a bit disappointing.

For the most part, the book was a fun read and I enjoyed it. I will definitely be backtracking and reading the rest of the series at some point!

It was a pleasure to discover the story of Brad and Dylan, the last couple and the last volume of the SVU series.
I loved seeing the three couples from SVU and Brad and Dylan visiting Europe.

Brad and Dylan are the best of friends, they know each other like no other. They understand each other in a few words and expressions, they are each other's confidant... But everything becomes more difficult when their relationship changes. They have a lot of insecurity.
They are complete opposites, but perfect for each other.
I loved discovering their story, their past, seeing them make big mistakes and trying to navigate between external expectations, their dreams and especially their insecurities to progress their relationship into something better.

Been wondering about Dylan and Brad since they first appeared in book one! It was clear these two best friends could be so much more. It was just a matter of when and how. When their friends decide to spend a chunk of summer break in Europe, Dylan and Brad easily agree. Dylan has no desire to stay home with his dad who has checked out since Dylan’s mom left them years ago and then Dylan’s older brother. Never to be heard from again. His dad barely acknowledges Dylan and he simply can’t take the silence. And for Brad, a little time away before he goes back to training for football sounds pretty good. Especially with Dylan and their friends. But the two of them soon realize that they are the only not couple on this trip. And it is getting harder for either of them to really mask the feelings they have. Brad has always known he was in love with Dylan, but he never wanted to hurt their friendship. Plus, he is stuck in his head that being together may be complicated and not what his family may expect of him. And Dylan is starting to realize that his best friend could be so much more to him. But would he want that too? You’ll be yelling at these guys to just talk and say what they really want! And even when they finally do, things aren’t so simple. You’ll have to be patient as they two work out their feelings and what they mean to one another but it is so worth it!

This is a best friends to more college romance, featuring Dylan and Brad, and is book three in the Summerville University series.

Dylan and Brad have been best friends since they start college and have both had a secret crush on each other the entire time.

One trip to Europe and only one bed sees them crossing a line into FWB territory.

This book was a little angsty for me. It hurt that Brad worried too much about what others thought, I was upset for Dylan for Brad hiding, his sad family life and the say his friends picked on him. Dylan was such a gorgeous soul and deserved better.

Brad was self aware of his destructive ways though and he did get his head out of his backside and Brad’s family were supportive of them being together. Dylan deserved to be cherished, I’m glad Brad stepped up.

On a side note, their trip in Europe sounded an amazing and it makes me want to go back there.

This is the final book in this series but there is also a big bonus content you can download that gives you are view tens years into the future, highly recommend you read that.

Things to expect in this book are:
Book 3 in series
MM college romance
Best friends to more
Some angst
Musician x Footballer
Size difference
Secret crushes
Frat boys
Hurt / Comfort
Mental health themes
European holiday
Forced proximity
Only one bed
Spicy times
Friends with benefits
Secret boyfriends
3rd act breakup
Supportive family

This is the first book I have read from Catherine Cloverdale and I really enjoyed it.

The main characters, Brad, and Dylan were both very likable. Dylan resonated more with me than Brad, mostly because he knew what he wanted while Brad was all over the map. On one hand, Brad said that he had always loved and wanted Dylan, but on the other hand, he was ready to drop him because he was afraid that his family and friends would disapprove.

It really bothered me that Brad wanted to hide the relationship from his friends... his family I understood. The fact that Brad and Dylan's friends were all gay and in relationships and Brad still felt he couldn't tell them about himself and Dylan really grated on me. I still loved the story despite that, so I was able to get over his needless insecurity. There was just enough angst, I'm not into overly angsty stories... I found this one just perfect enough that I couldn't put the book down.

I really liked the other characters in the book, I didn't find myself lost even though I had not read their stories. Overall I give this book 4.5 stars... half a star because Brad was a coward. I will definitely go back and read the other stories form this series and will most definitely read this author again.

ANGSTY WITH STEAM!💕

In the final book of the series we finally we get the backstory and story on laid back skater drum playing music major Dylan and his best friend the smirking intimidating soon to be pro football player Brad!

Their dynamic was pining for your best friend since freshman year (Brad) and initiating a FWB no strings (Dylan) while abroad in Italy,Berlin, Paris until London where things change…

“That’s all this was. Mindless pleasure with a friend.”
“So what if it made my head and my chest do all kinds of funny things?”

Their emotional growth started in their final year of college (Brad) when mistakes are made regarding a secret relationship and decisions that are made as a result (Dylan)…

Their found family of friends are supportive when needed but this is something that they have to sort out themselves… but who will make the big romantic gesture?…

I found Dylan’s father very selfish in his grief for losing people that do not want to be found and in doing that he neglected Dylan- in my opinion both Dylan and his father need therapy…

A sweet epilogue follows all their ups and downs with a glimpse into their future!

I voluntarily received an ARC and this is my honest non biased review.

'Some Strings Attached' is a captivating read that combines intense heat with a sprinkle of angst. Centering around a group of college boys, the story is particularly driven by the two main characters, Dylan and Brad.

You can’t help but fall for each character in the book. Dylan’s journey is particularly poignant as he copes with the departure of his mother and older brother. This sense of loss adds layers to his character, making him relatable and three-dimensional.

The interactions between Dylan and Brad are filled with real and imagined drama, making you feel every emotional twist and turn they go through. Dylan second-guesses himself constantly, while Brad seems to make one wrong decision after another, making their journey frustrating yet compelling.

Despite the hiding of feelings and numerous misunderstandings, Dylan and Brad’s relationship ultimately flourishes. Their happy ever after feels well-earned and leaves the reader with a satisfying conclusion.

Overall, ‘Some Strings Attached’ is a must-read for anyone who enjoys a good mix of drama, emotion, and ultimately, a fulfilling happy ending.

BEST FRIENDS TO LOVERS
Brad and Dylan are the last ones of the group of these friends.
They were already best friends but it seems like Brad always saw Dylan as more than just friends and he took his chance to show Dylan just how much during their trip in Europe that turned out into a couples’ trip.
i loved how Dylan was portrayed, how his introverted personality made him take distance even from Brad.
People from the other book just used the world “weird” to describe him when he is sooo much more than just that, he is soo much more worthy than how people talk about him, and Micah… i just hated so much how he made Dylan even more insicure even if he was not aware of his actions.
Brad… i tried to understand his character but i was on Dylan’s part in every occasion since he was hurting more than anyone else and he didn’t deserve what Brad did to him. Hoped it would take longer for Dylan to forgive him but i guess they were both too deep in love for the revenge arc to exist at all.
I wished to see his dad improvement as well but 🥹
Overall, it was a cute book and the last one to close this series. a very good series, loved it🫶🏻

This was a pretty good book but I wasn’t all that crazy about Brad, for someone supposedly so IN LOVE, he came across as being pretty uncaring. Always worrying about what others thought or what they might say. Wanting to keep things a secret 🤨.

Dylan, the other MC, had my heart. Due to his home life, he was accustomed to being ignored and overlooked and it was his acceptance of it that made me want to hug him so hard. And I know he’s fictional, I get it, but I worried over him so much. It sounded for all the world like he suffered from severe depression which made me want to smack his mom, dad, brother and BRAD for failing him though Brad did finally get his head out of his rear end and make his part up to him. I gotta say, the grand gesture DID kinda redeem him in my eyes a little…why couldn’t he have been that sweet all along??!! Up to that point, his best feature was his dirty talk, THAT he was the master of.

Anyway, let’s all show Dylan some love, grab this book today!

Listen, if this book had a Team Brad or a Team Dylan, I would be on Team Dylan's side. For most of the book, I felt like Brad didn't deserve Dylan. Brad knew that he loved Dylan, and was more than happy to make him "mine", as long as they didn't let anyone know. The characteristics he loves about Dylan are also the characteristics he is embarrassed about. He feels like his family has a lot of expectations of him, and being with someone like Dylan is not one of them.

My heart aches for Dylan, whose neurodivergent mind was constantly confused with Brad's selfish actions. I really wanted to love Brad and Dylan, but their love story was sweet but complicated. Still, not a bad book... just frustrating at time.

Overall, I am glad to see the character growth in other characters from the past books as well. The Europe trip was epic, even with the ups and downs, and the ending made me cry with happiness for them all. Love this series!

Take chances and ask the right questions. Brad, has been secretly crushing on his best friend Dylan. Dylan, comes from a broken home that has damaged his esteem but opened his eyes to the beauty of the world. On a summer trip before senior year, the group of friends go to Europe. There Brad and Dylan share a room with one bed. Dylan and Brad, learn a lot about themselves and each other during their trip. They learn the importance of expectations and what control they have over them. This is a story that left me feeling warm and content after wanting to give Brad a piece of my mind. Dylan is a nice guy. Brad is a bit of a warm mess. Their journey to understanding is not smooth, but there are fun points. The travel companions are a fun friend group. Good flow, excellent travel city descriptions make me want to update my travel lists. Well done. I received an ARC and am voluntarily leaving a review.

Firstly, let me say I’ve got this book from gay romance reviews, and this is me leaving my honest review.

Wow this is a book of 2 half for me. the first part of this book is painful I felt so bad for Brad because he was obviously infatuated with his best friend. Dylan Don’t get me wrong Dylan would be there for his best friend but my heart just really hurt for Brad. When their friends decide that they’re going to go on a holiday before they get back and do their last year in college. And boy is it epic they go to Europe and whilst they’re away Brad kisses Dylan and before you know it they are hooking up. But then confusion with communications just made me ache even more. But then Brad just suffers with doubt everything he does he second guesses himself.
I’ve got to say this book for me was a rollercoaster of emotions. I do like Brad and Dylan and all the guys, but boy did I wanna bang their heads together at times. Can’t wait to read more from this awesome .

Shane decided to take the gang to Italy where his love had got an internship at a lawyers office, the trip was between their Jr and senior year in college. Dylan likes skateboarding and Brad played football in college but on the trip they had to share bed, but they thought it should be OK as they were best friends. They both had feelings for each other, but never admitted it so they decided to be friends with benefits on the trip. Dylan‘s father never knew that he had been on the trip and Brad thought his parents wouldn’t except Dylan so he started to ignore Dylan when they got back. But at a game, Brad told Dylan in front of everybody how he felt about Dylan and his parents were OK about it.

"Some Strings Attached" is a captivating blend of intense heat and a touch of angst, set against the backdrop of college life. The story centers on Dylan and Brad, two characters who quickly draw you in with their emotional depth and complex relationship.

Dylan's journey is particularly poignant as he navigates the pain of losing his mother and older brother, which adds layers to his character and makes him deeply relatable. His interactions with Brad are filled with both real and imagined drama, keeping you hooked as they struggle through misunderstandings and self-doubt.

Despite the hurdles, their relationship ultimately flourishes, leading to a well-earned and satisfying happy ending. "Some Strings Attached" is a must-read for anyone who enjoys a mix of drama, emotion, and a rewarding conclusion.

DND at 57%. It’s pretty rare that I don’t finish but it’s been nearly a month and I couldn’t keep trying. A book this length usually wouldn’t take more than a week to finish. It was incredibly boring and unnecessarily long. There were a ton of words that really didn’t say anything. I never felt any real chemistry between the MCs. It took too long for them to admit they wanted more than a FWB arrangement just for Brad to treat Dylan like a dirty secret. I tried to keep reading to see why he was ashamed of either himself or Dylan but I just stopped caring by the time they got to London with no clarity. I’ll have to just be okay without closure. I’m a masochist but even I can’t put myself through this torture any longer.

Dylan & Brad

If you haven't read the other stories in this SVU group, you should. They are fun and light hearted. I've been waiting to learn the story of Dylan & Brad. In this story, we learn a lot about Dylan's background. My heart broke for him while reading it. Thankfully, Brad is always there to lift him up. They both make mistakes, missing things about each other that should be obvious. There was a point in the story when I wanted to shake Brad!! Shane and Theo were there to help these two find their way back to each other. Their bond as friends and chemistry as lovers came out of the pages as a beautiful story!!

I enjoyed reading this story of Brad and Dylan. It is more of a diary of their road to finally showing their love. Brad is working hard in college football to turn pro after graduation and Dylan is a music major. Brad and Dylan have been best friends for years but Brad is hesitant to show Dylan he has loved him the whole time. They have very different family lives but finally make it work. Recommended reading.

Dylan and Brad are college BF's but Brad has always had feelings for him. Dylan's home life is messed up and he is always thinking of his missing brother through the book so that is jarring. They hook up and then things get weird for them as they dance around their feelings. You can't help but get angry with Brad and the way he tromps on Dylan's feelings, he is clueless. The last part of the book is an entirely different attitude that makes the whole book better. I received a copy of this book and this is my voluntary opinion.

I found this book hard to read, I kept putting it down and coming back to it. Dylan was my reasoning for this. He just seems so depressed. I will agree he has a valid reason, his dad being the main one.... but all his talk of and to his AWOL brother... I felt that needed an ending.
Brad bugged me. He was all Im in love with Dylan, he can never know.... when he gets his shot, and suddenly he wants them to be a secret. Making Dylan feel like even less. His blanking of Dylan, kniwing his hime life and how he feels, I think Dylan let him away with it too easily.

Another great entry in this series and a lovely closer. Brad and Dylan are a perfect couple for an opposites attract/friends to lovers romance and things actually go pretty smoothly until Brad stops listening to his heart and what he truly wants and begins to think about what "everyone" else (except Dylan) wants and needs him to be both personally and for his future football career. Things fall apart and you might need a few tissues but Brad finally gets his head back on straight and there was a satisfactory period of apology that I bought his redemption.

This was a great read.

Dylan and Brad were best friends who were secretly attracted to each other since they first met. Circumstances during a group trip to Europe bring the secret to light.

The characters were great. Really felt for them as I learned of their backgrounds. Very well written book. This was my first work by this author, but I will be looking for others in the SVU series!.

I loved this book. These two were super sweet together. They were so different but just fit together perfectly.

Dylan was so sweet. Brad was lucky that Dylan gave him the time of day. I was so mad at Brad when they got home. If I would've been Dylan I would've walked all the way away. Brad definitely got lucky.

The ending was super sweet. I'll definitely be going back to read the other stories about the other couples. They were fascinating as well.

Some Strings Attached is the third and final book in the Summerville University series and while standalone I recommend all three of them, they are just fun. This is a best friends to lovers, one bed book about Dylan and Brad, who we have read about throughout the series. I loved this book and the entire series is just great.

This is the last book in the series and I’ve been looking forward to reading best friends Brad and Dylan’s story and it did not disappoint. The story is full of ups and downs, it has angst and plenty of steam mistakes are made but eventually they realise how important they are to each other and they’re better together.

A typical storyline trope about best friends who end up sharing a bed on a trip and decide to have a no strings arrangement for the summer! Obviously you can guess what happens! However aside from this I thoroughly enjoyed it and loved the main characters Dylan and Brad. A well written storyline with great interaction between the two of them that has some angsty moments but overall was nice seeing two complete opposites come together and get a well deserved hea.
