Guardian Angel

Rate this book
The lady in command -- graduate of Annapolis -- beautiful Alex Page had put a career in Naval Intelligence and a bitter marriage behind her. Now, as security chief of a major firm, her main charge was guarding the body of its dashing president. — Proud, aloof, an absolute professional, Alex had no interest in protecting Jared Templeton from the exquisite society women who assaulted his magnificent body by night, no interest in challenging the Sydney Sorceress or the South Seas Siren, until, without warning, the climate changed. Suddenly the man who moved through women like a shark through shoals of fish launched a calculated attack on her senses. And Alex, master of self-defense, could no longer guarantee the safety of her own heart.

When I sold to Silhouette books on my wedding anniversary in 1979 I didn't expect to get this far. I love what I do and can't imagine doing anything else. I'm married living with Katie, a white mini Schnauzer who considers herself the center of our world, Hunter, a Yorkie mix who's a real mama's boy, Olivia my darling diva chihuahua, Dutch, our easy going happy go lucky terrier mix, Syd, our Panama Nape parrot, and Florence, our demented tortoise. We live in Southern California near San Diego in a town that's provided fodder for some of my stories. Once upon a time, I could say that when we moved here there were three romance writers. Now there is only me and to date I have not been considered a suspect. More romance authors have moved in and are safe and sound...so far.

A lot of my backlist books are now available for your Kindle and in print along with new novellas featuring the first witches in the Hex series along with my second love, romantic suspense books. And more books coming!

My Hex series are the books of my heart. The ones I've wanted to write for a long time and so glad to see out there. Many readers are confused by the two Demon titles and different cover looks. They're a part of the Hex series, still the disgraced witches from the Witches Academy, just with a different look. And yes, more Hex books will be coming!

There are times I think I enjoy writing the creatures more than the characters. And probably why my Fluff and Puff bunny slippers tend to never be where I left them! That's more than easy to do since they're tattooed on one ankle and Horace is tattooed on the other.

I'm very thankful for my readers for sticking to me.

I was surprised to note that despite the kindle cover revamp this was first published in 1983 during the "good old days" of rampant sexism and casual sexual harassment in the work place. This surprise was because, except for some classically awful clothing descriptions and the boss smoking in the office, I couldn't tell it apart from a more recently written story. I think that pretty much says it all for category romance when you can't tell that 30 years of societal progress has taken place.

I'm kind of at a loss as to why Alex falls for Jared in this since he was a huge arse for 80% of the book and the first half seems to involve a lot of sexual harassment with him using his position as her boss to get her alone and feel her up. Deeply unsexy. He does improve really close to the end and seems to become a caring, sweet guy, but even then it's hard to reconcile that person with the man who we've previously read doing some really creepy stuff, like trying to undress Alex in semi-public settings, grinding his erection against her at all opportunities, and licking her face. Alex doesn't help her case much by telling him to stop touching her and leave her alone a few times and then suddenly deciding to just have angry sex with him. Because in Romanceland hormones are crazily powerful and women can not resist them when there's the slightest chance babies are in the offing. Even the women who don't want kids. Plus in Romanceland contraceptives have a shockingly high failure rate that may actually increase the chance of pregnancy.

The one thing I really liked about this novel was the female bodyguard angle. I've only come across it on two other occasions and I have to say that I do find it adorable to read about the ever practical, tough as nails, ex-military types finding love and gruffly trying to express it without knowing how to do it "normally". It always seems far more genuine than the gushing sentiment in other romance novels.

Still, despite the awfully dated content the writing wasn't really that objectionable. It had an easy flow to it and I found myself reading along almost in spite of myself. It wasn't enough to save the book for me, but it does seem to indicate that perhaps the author's later work (her Hex series for example) may be worth checking out if I want something light and PNR themed.
