I do enjoy a good ol’ “former royalty realizes what kind of world their ignorance has created” trope so the 1.5 stars are all for Annette actually I do like her arc a lot
The lack of other stars are for the inconsistency in Heiner’s character. I can see what the intent was— someone who fell in love with Annette first, but hates what she stands for, and incompletely transitions their love to one of hatred where he wants to hurt her but also can’t stand to see her dead or out of his sight. It’s a tale as old as time and I’ve read it done cohesively before. What bothers me in this situation, however, is how Heiner just acts like everything is normal sometimes and gives Annette allowances that nobody that hated his wife would ever give.
He wants her dead, yet he allows her to have unsupervised outings and an allowance. He has a country to run yet he takes time out of his non-stop work days to go stalk her and hide behind a newspaper to watch what she’s doing. He lets the media and the public shit on her and paint her as an unfeeling tyrant, but stands beside her in every picture and continuously associates himself with her to the detriment of his own political movement. The scene that really annoyed me was Heiner offering adoption as an option to Annette because he’s like “I know you always wanted kids” BROSKI WHY ARE YOU LEISURELY TALKING ABOUT YOUR FUTURE AS IF YOU HAVEN’T PUSHED HER TO ATTEMPT SUICIDE TWO SEPARATE TIMES?????? like his motivations just make no sense to me because I feel like hate and obsession can totally exist at the same time, but I don’t think hate and tenderness really can???
At least… not in the way that is being depicted. You just caught her trying to drown herself… and you are glad she hates her life so much she’s trying to end it… and then you make her a cup of coffee because her insomnia meds are probably not good for her body????? Make it make sense???? I understand that some people like their toxicity with a side of *softly caresses cheek* but like… moments of weakness and softness on the abuser’s part are not the same as what Heiner does which is straight up acting like a different man who actually really cares about her and is completely confused as to why she’s suicidal. Like girl.
