A pitch perfect picture book with breathtakingly beautiful, textured illustrations and a heartwarming story from author-illustrator, Jonny Lambert.

When Bear moves into a new home in the woods, his home feels empty, and Bear is a little bit lonely. With a RAT-A-TAT-TAT! on his neighbour's door, Bear quickly finds a warm smile and friendship with Hare. When a storm CRASHES through the wood, destroying Bear's home, the two friends discover that home is more than just a house . . . it's where the heart is.

Exploring the true meaning of belonging, this is the perfect introduction into the joys and complexities of friendship. Another story to treasure for fans of Jonny Lambert's other books, Little Why, The Great Aaa-Ooo, The Only Lonely Panda and The Big Angry Roar.

Home Is Where The Heart Is, is a sweet tale about a bear and a hare. Bear moves in next door to Hare. Bear’s home is large but has no feeling to it, no matter how much he tries to make it homely. Feeling sad he knocks on his neighbour’s door and is invited into Hare’s small and cluttered home.

Although they are both different, Hare is old, Bear is young. Hare is messy, Bear is tidy, the two learn that they enjoy spending time together and all through the seasons they enjoy each other’s company. But then something bad happens to Bear’s home, how will the two cope?

The story is beautifully told and shows the true meaning of friendship and that home is definitely where the heart is. The full-page illustrations throughout are absolutely amazing and capture the story perfectly.

This is a lovely children’s book that reminds me of the kind of stories I read as a child. Touching words surrounded by adorable illustrations and a heart-warming plot.

Bear builds a new house in the wood and meets his new neighbor, Hare. Bear is calm and tidy, while Hare is energetic and sloppy. Despite their differences, they strike up a friendship and do everything together. When Hare is sick, Bear takes care of him. When Bear's house is destroyed by a storm, Hare invites Bear to live in his underground home. But it's very cramped and messy! Can their friendship survive two roommates who are so very different?

I loved this cute story! It's both hilarious and heartwarming. I liked the positive messages about how friendship can overcome any differences and bring joy into a lonely life.

The illustrations are wonderful! Every page is delightful, and I loved the forest colors and the designs for Hare's underground home. The animal characters are so sweet!

3.5 stars.

Read this to Nicco whilst he was sick - he identified with the character who was looked after, and noted that I identify as the messy one.

The warm colors and textures in this picture book bring the two characters and their respective dwelling places to life. There is light and dark shading in the images and much attention to detail as the pictures create different moods throughout the story. Although Bear and Hare have very different personalities and ways of navigating their worlds, they become friends, sharing fun pastimes and sticking with each other through thick and thin. Bear nurses Hare back to health during an illness, and after a storm destroys Bear's home, Hare is quick to offer his place as a shelter for his friend. But since the two friends are so different, living in close quarters isn't ideal and causes some problems to arise. Irritated with each other's ways, they argue and briefly separated until they realize that their friendship is strong enough to surmount those inconveniences. This picture book contains important lessons about acceptance, compromise, and the value of friendship. While it won't always be appropriate to give up one's space for someone else, sometimes it is, and the little annoyances and inconveniences are far outweighed by the merits of a true friend and a home where someone feels welcome. There are several close-ups of the friends, and I especially liked the pages showing their frustration with each other's habits as well as the double-page spread in which Bear's house is destroyed. There's so much movement in that illustration that readers may feel as though this author/illustrator has captured the fierce wind on the pages. The story itself is reassuring, positive, and filled with reminders that fit its title. While there are plenty of houses that aren't really homes or seem to have no heart, that's clearly not the case with this one, maybe too cramped and crowded for both Hare and Bear, but home nevertheless.

HOME IS WHERE THE HEART IS is a sweet picture book read about home and friendship. Bear builds himself a house, but something is missing - he feels lonely. He goes over to his neighbor's house and meets Hare, a friend with whom he spends all his time, even though they are so different. When Hare is sick, Bear helps him to feel better. When Bear's house falls down in a storm, Hare brings him back to his house. After an argument, they separate but soon realize that home is each other.

What I loved: This is a sweet story about friendship. Friends may not always be alike, but the important thing is that they are there for each other when they need it most. Although the title message is what the emphasis is on around home being where the heart is, the messages of true friendship and kindness really stand out.

The illustrations capture the story beautifully with lots of color and detail, bringing the forest and their homes to life. The font is large and clear with strategic color changes that make it easy to read aloud throughout. The amount of text on each page is well-suited to preschoolers and older readers.

Final verdict: A lovely story of friendship, HOME IS WHERE THE HEART IS is a sweet picture book read that will appeal to young readers.

The artwork is lovely. Not a single visual cliche to be found.

Can the same be said for the story, the writing? Even the title? Maybe not.

Welcome to Cliche-Land -- except that the man and woman in this love story aren't humans but a bear and a hare.

Talk about meeting cute! Oh, the rhyming of the main characters! This must be a lovely relationship, Bear and Hare.

HERE'S A SAMPLE of the deployment of cliches in the text, plus the rhymey rhymes.

But one day in winter
came a mighty storm.
Branches snapped,
trees bent and cracked.

And in a blinding flash
and deafening crash,
Bear's house came tumbling down!

This is a lovely tale of friendship in the wild old woods. It's simple and gentle. It's even predictable. The dynamic illustration goes from one season to another, following color schemes that fit, and the brush strokes are bold and full of texture. It ends on a bright spring day bringing us back to a new year with a new friend. The end pages are gorgeous with leaves of green and yellow hues and various textures.

This is a lovely book about two animals sharing space. They are very different and try to find their commonalities. As an adult child, I found this endearing because I recently shared my home with my mother and we had to learn how to live together again. This book is part of my library collection and I hope my students enjoy it.

I liked these illustrations a lot. Bear and hare meet and become friends. Bear cares for Hare when Hare gets sick, and Hare takes bear in when Bear's house collapses. I thought the story was just okay.
