As the threat of war looms over the kingdom and a sinister conspiracy unfolds, Alistair must fight to stay in control. Battling mercenaries, escaping treacherous dungeons, and facing the dangerous truth head-on, he quickly learns that his world is about to spiral into chaos.

When an invitation to an assassin's masquerade ball reveals a dark secret set to destroy everything in the Dawncrest Kingdom, Alistair and Ghost are the only ones who can stop it. Excellent sequel. A very visual series - for me, anyway.

I adore the Summons (Ziggy especially - so cute. That's a big squishy hug from me, pal!). The relationship between Alistair Blackstar and Ghost, the assassin inside him, is growing. (Notice that I didn't say if it was good or bad.) It's getting harder for Alistair to cover up the fact that he is two people, with two completely different levels of experience and skills, but he does his best, and his body can take a fair battering. He's still got to put up with idiots in the academy, and learn at the same time, so he's got his hands full.

Easy-to-read, fabulous card system and skills, solid storyline, and great characterisations. Just so much going on with some great choreography, too. Total sensory entertainment. Bring on book three!

Another quality piece of work from Harmon Cooper.

I absolutely adore deckbuilding litRPG's and this one is no exception. Although there's only a few out there, and I think that I've purdy much found and read 'em all. Harmon Cooper's the top notch author, pulling off this mesmerizing series! However I did miss Soundbooth Theater podcast style of narration, because when it's a choice between reading or waiting for the audiobook, there isn't a choice 😉 I hafta grab it and read like the word demon I am.
I love the MC Alistair and the ongoing conversations/arguments he has in his head with Ghost. And watching how his friends deal with his eccentricities. And then there's his cards... the Beasts that reside there in his heart deck and the comradery he shares with those Beasts. All the while Ghost is getting closer to his finishing goal on his path of revenge and to end those who actually murdered him. Ohhhh and yeah having Heterochromia doesn’t mean that you're possessed by a demon. Even my cat has Heterochromia and she not a demon... well she really is but she's a cat 😆.
So go grab the book and join me while I wait for the next book! Ya hear that Harmon Cooper I absodamnlutely need the next book! And yeah to all you authors, please Please, PLEASE, write your own deckbuilding litRPG. I'll be sure to read it!!!

Harmon Cooper continues his story of student wizard, Allistair, who gets the mind and soul of an assassin reborn within him. The assassin, when he is in possession of the body can perform amazing feats of weaponry and skill, but doesn't know magic, so they have to trade control back and forth.

The longer story is how Allistair grows and changes as he learns about the assassin's world as well as learning magical wizardry while building friendships.

The final outcome is still up in the air--will Allistair end up as an assassin, a mage, or something of both?

Fun second half. Very slow opening, the obligatory trawls through the dungeon are dull compared to the assassin plotting stuff. Luckily once we were done with the dungeons it became good again. I think you might be disappointed if you’re here for the LitRPG as it’s pretty perfunctory. Might as well just have them learning spells honestly. Magic tattoos? Anyway. Doesn’t bother me but if you’re a LitRPG die-hard, be warned.

Great Follow-up

This 2nd book lifts a lot more of the hidden truths that Ghost has been about and just how out MC now has to solve it all whilst maintaining his cover. Some cool skills and of course the action scenes do Cooper his usual high standards of interest.
Looking forward to the next book immensely.

Wow, intense

For a magical academy story, this is top notch. Excellent pacing, memorable characters. This definitely gets up there with Harry Potter and My Hero Academia. And the slime is cute.
Squish. Squish!

We are not alone

I found Ghost getting in and out of more trouble. I love the Slime, it is very expressive. Ghost also got to deal with someone from his past.
