Donovan

When my honeymooning best friend asks me to abandon my beloved Manhattan to house sit for him in Rosedale, Connecticut, I plan to use my small-town summer to finish my unfinishable play. Until it turns out the house was double-booked, and I suddenly have a roommate for the summer. Honestly, Beck’s not so bad—he’s either sunning in a Speedo or baking cookies that taste like my childhood—but how can I get any work done with that kind of distraction?

Beck

After dropping out of law school, I need to figure out my next act, but I’d rather procrastinate by the pool while house sitting for my cousin. I wasn’t expecting company, but I’m happy to share, especially since Donovan is as hot as the pavement in July. He seems to be into me, too, but I don’t do one-time hook-ups and he’s definitely not in the market for a boyfriend.

So we make a deal. Two months. Roommates-with-benefits. No strings.

But as summer wears on, our arrangement feels more like a relationship than some of the relationships I’ve been in, and it’s clear I’m not getting out of this with my heart intact. I’m not only falling in love with Donovan, I’m also falling in love with Rosedale. Will I be able to leave Rosedale, and Donovan, behind?

Cool for the Summer is a stand-alone, slow burn, roommates-to-lovers, summer fling story with a dash of cookie baking and plenty of sweet and steamy small-town goodness.

Actually pretty good.

I'm not the biggest romance aficionado, but I actually found this one pretty nice. This was a forced proximity, chance encounter, roommates-to-friends-with-benefits situation that I quite enjoyed. There's decent buildup and a satisfying conclusion.

The two MC's backstories, however, are...clunky, let's say. There's a good amount of drama that I felt didn't need to be there and I feel that eliminating it would have shortened the book a healthy amount. Also, the fact that one of them is starting a small business in the span of a month??? Um, sure Jan.

Despite my qualms, I do give credit to Elle Waters for crafting a unique (in my opinion) premise with creative characters and world-building. The fact that you can read the separate love stories of other characters you meet within this one is so freaking genius! I'm not committing, but I could see myself picking up another Waters work in the future.

Oh gosh, this was a great little book with beautiful character development, romance, and a dog! This book can absolutely stand alone, but it was enjoyable to read knowing the characters the two MCs were house sitting for from her previous book “His Coffee Shop Crush.”
Donovan and Beckett are both booked to house and dog sit for the summer by accident and decide to roll with it. Beck is self proclaimed “at loose ends” in his life, trying to decide literally where to go next, while Donovan needs a break from the city and to work on his next creative project. The plot unfolds mostly how you think it will, and that’s not a criticism. Reading this was a beautiful way to spend a few hours, great writing, getting to know and then root for these two to figure it all out and get their HEA.
Waters’ writing is intriguing- I laughed out loud in a few spots, never had a cringe or eye rolling moment at the way things were described. She has a particular talent for painting intensely emotional moments, whether they are physical or not. I look forward to reading the next book in the series!
I received this as an ARC and am leaving a review that is fully my own opinion.

A fun read about a mixed-up summer housesitting

This is my first read of an Ellie Waters romance. In this case, two guys are asked separately by two guys getting married to housesit their home and take care of their dog for the summer while they go on their long European honeymoon.

Donovan, an actor with all the good looks and who wants nothing more than hookups, Beck, seemingly a vagabond who had been living out of his car after dropping out of law school and aimlessly moving from one failed attempt at starting his life adventure after another.

Of course, they fall in love, but the angst is that the actor wants nothing long term after a horribly failed relationship previously. Still Donovan and the seemingly aimless younger Beck set up house, enjoying the company of each other in a very familiar way. Their relationship deepens and their friends see it as them being boyfriends. Beck's love of baking, and a special knack for recreating a childhood cookie flavor Donovan loved, and their shared love of the dog they're watching, make it seem idealistic and domestic.

There are key points where their relationship deepens, and those where Donovan pushes it as temporary fun for the summer. Ultimately, there is a happy ever after, and Elle Waters treats us to a mostly fun ride to that ending. There are several tropes that are trotted out, but most are presented as logical and sequential to building a good relationship.

And of course, as in most MM romances, they pad up stairs, and purchase is the favorite word for a hold or position on something.

This is a fast read with less of the padding (in this case, I am describing fluff) that some romances have to seemingly make a higher page count. I like tight writing and Elle Waters gives it to us. I'll be reading more of her books and hoping to follow several of the characters she's written into this book in some others of hers.

Beck is having a hard time deciding what he wants to do with his life, which leads him to a long line of unfinished degrees and half-fulfilled dreams. What he really wants is to find something that fits, in a place that feels right, and then find someone to call his own, but at the moment, he is winging it. When his cousin asks him to dog sit for him for two months while on his honeymoon, he jumps at it.

Donovan is tired. His acting career is successful but wears him down, and he needs to see how this playwrite thing works out. He is satisfied with his city life and occasional hookups, looking for nothing more than what he has because it's exactly what he wants. Nobody is going to hurt him again. When he is offered the opportunity to hang out in a small town and dog sit for two months by his friend, he jumps on it.

Both men find themselves together and decide they can work it out. Neither expected the attraction they feel nor the desire they give in to.

OPINION: I enjoyed this book. There is a certain slow-burn element to it while they figure out what they both really want. Beck gets excited about his new opportunity while fighting his feelings, which makes for a fun read. The running cookie theme was great, and I found myself pulled to the story, reminding myself it's a romance and there will be a HEA. This is a low-angst fun story that has some well-rounded characters that I liked a lot. Cleo was the best pupper, and the small-town was super prevalent. It's such a great story to read if you want a smile.

It was cute.

This may have been one of the books that certainly made me keep an open mind.

From the close proximity to the FWB features, I expected something totally different from what I read. But I enjoyed it regardless.

Donovan and Beckett become house sitters upon being asked to do so while the house owners go on honeymoon. Beckett has a crush on the, not in for the long run, Donovan who would rather not sleep with his tempting roommate. Beckett accepts that and is willing to endure the heartbreak once their mutually beneficial arrangement is over.

Donovan has his life and all that he thinks he wants turned upside down and lured into becoming the boyfriend material type of guy, without realizing it. Though he denys time after time again that he doesn't want a relationship, he will need to take the necessary step, make the necessary decisions if he doesn't want to stop having unlimited access to Beckett's cookies.

This book contains, high heat, medium angst, slowish burn, forced proximity, dude in a speedo, a dog that seems to read the room and a guy who is scared of heartbreak.

Mixing bowls, molasses cookies, pea-protein guy, mrghph, sunscreen

Beckett 'Beck' Avery is a cooking- & baking-loving rootless couch surfer at loose ends. He's in Rosedale to house- & dog-sit for his cousin, Jack, for two months. But Jack's new husband, Pete, had already asked Donovan Eastman, an actor based in NY, to do the same. Oops. Beck & Donovan awkwardly agree to share the responsibilities and be roommates for the summer.

Both men settle into a comfortable routine and learn their way around the small town of Rosedale. They also meet the various business owners and residents. Strangers keep mistakenly assume they are boyfriends. Beck & Donovan sure act like it. But Donovan doesn't do relationships, only one-night stands. Against his better judgment, Beck is wildly attracted to Donovan.

The wonderful residents of Rosedale are friendly, warmly accepting, and prone to the small town's wireless gossip network. Everyone in Rosedale knows each other. Elle Waters's deft writing portrays the imagery expertly without being wordy.

I enjoyed this book very much and found it very satisfying. I happily recommend it!

I requested two books from this series from GRR, because I've read from this author before and enjoyed it, so expected I would have a decent time.

Reading this felt like flipping through the channels on a weekend where you have nothing to do, catching a movie you've never heard of right at the beginning, deciding to give it a few minutes before you surf away, but being sucked in and impressed at how good it was. This book isn't doing anything daring, but it is doing what it is doing really well.

I am a bit of a sucker for a vacation romance, and this was a bit of a twist on that, with a double-booked house sitting situation. Both MCs are likable, though I think I was a bit more in Beck's corner. He was quite vulnerable and self-deprecating, and I just wanted to see him get a win (or two).

While this isn't a five star fave, it is one of those books I can absolutely see myself re-reading next May or June to get me in the summer mood. There is something to be said for solid re-readability, which is something I think this author delivers.

Thanks to GRR for the review copy!

Well, colour me surprised, this was a very nice book.

Small town anything can be a hit or miss and this one was quite a hit. I really like the effortless way the two of them got along while still staying way away from insta romance. Both of them had quite an interesting backstory, the forced proximity was just awesome, it's like those "just one bed!" and other tropes except believable and extended AND voluntary instead of "snowed in with my nemesis" kind of romance. The blend of easy cohabitation and that one pesky big reason for not dating created just the right mix of tension and interest.

These days, I find myself enjoying some "empty" books and I don't hate it. Nothing much happens here and yet the things that do happen do so quickly. I couldn't always enjoy this style of writing where it feels like we're just watching someone live their life with not all of the should-be-boring parts cut out. These days, it just feels peaceful and I enjoyed reading it from start to finish.

Definitely recommend.

Cool for the Summer was my first Elle Waters book. This was a fun and engaging read about a mixed-up summer housesitting adventure. In this Ellie Waters romance, two men—Donovan, a good-looking actor who only seeks casual flings, and Beck, a wandering soul who dropped out of law school—are both asked to house-sit for a couple on a European honeymoon.

Despite Donovan's reluctance to commit after a past failed relationship, the two find themselves growing closer while caring for the house and dog. Beck’s love for baking, especially recreating a childhood cookie Donovan adores, adds a cozy, domestic touch to their deepening connection. Their friends see them as boyfriends, even as Donovan insists it's just a summer fling.

The story is full of heartfelt moments and a few familiar romance tropes, but Waters keeps the writing tight and avoids unnecessary fluff. It’s a fast, enjoyable read with a satisfying happy ending, and I'm excited to read more of her work and revisit some of these charming characters in future books.

Beck and Donovan end up dog sitting for their cousin and friend, respectively, while they’re on their honeymoon. They flirt when they meet, before realizing they’re to be roommates.

Beck’s a relationship guy, Donovan a hook up guy, so they agree to be just roommates. But, Beck helps Donovan by supporting him to write his play, and Donovan encourages Beck to start a cookie business.

They agree to be roommates with benefits, and the summer brings joy and fun and help with future plans and self doubts. By the end of their time, Beck has to tell Donovan he’s fallen in love with him, which Donovan is scared by, until his friends make him see he’s in love too.

Great romance, with lots of good times by the pool, playing poker, and eating many cookies. I like the happy honeymoon couple and Kingston, an interesting friend.

I received this ARC for free and am pleased to give it my honest review in appreciation.

This is the first book I’ve ready by Elle Waters, and I was not disappointed. Beck and Donovan were everything I needed in a sweet and sexy romance and so much more.

I loved the premise of two guys house-sitting becoming lovers and falling in love. So so good. 🙌🏻🙌🏻

New experiences, new beginnings! Two men, Donovan and Beck have different agendas for the summer. Beck, dropped out of law school needs to plan the next phase of his life. He thinks housesitting for his Cousin will give him time to find his brain. Donovan, agrees to housesit for his best friend whose on his honeymoon. He plans on using the time to finish the play it is taking forever to write. Somehow, both men expect to housesit. They agree on terms and condition and a no feelings housemates with benefits. Developing feelings puts a kink in planned expectations. We have two likeable adorable men who miscommunicate and spend the summer in a small town, something neither is used to getting to know each other and small town life. Good flow, likeable characters. Nice cover art! Nicely done. I received an ARC and am voluntarily leaving a review.

What a wonderful great book to kick off the new series I was all in from page one with this story about two cute hot sexy men. I loved that when Donovan and Beck inadvertently end up at the same house to house sit , rather than to be bothered by it they simply roll with it and go with the flow. You knew then love was going to blossom even though Beck is anti relationship but as I spend more time together, slowly the walls thaw and their hearts and feeling start. This is one of those books that left me smiling and laughing and believing that love is possible. A great read so grab your favorite wine or beverage of your choice and enjoy a quick fun easy read that will not disappoint I did receive an ARC and leave this honest review.

Donovan and Beck meet the morning after Donovan's friend Pete and Beck's cousin Jack's wedding. Boy is Beck hungover. Donovan immediately goes into caretaker mode. He ensures Beck is hydrated and buys him a super greasy breakfast sandwich. Separately, they have been asked to house and dog sit for two months while the happy couple honeymoons in Europe. Despite Donovan's hook up only and Beck's the more coupley the better attitude they come together over the summer. Donovan is willing to try because there is at expiration date staring at them.
As they each ponder what they want their future to look like, they support each other and are true caregivers for each. They will just have to be strong enough to ask for what they want and the courage to make that leap of faith.

This is a very cute read and the first in the Rosedale Seasons series.

If you enjoy a small town, a slow burn, close proximity, a cute but high maintenance dog and FWB gone right or wrong depending on how you see then this book is for you.

It has great heat within a slow burn setup with two strangers who lead interesting but fairly different lives in terms of how they live their day to day. There's an air of not wanting to fall in love and the fear of what love does to one of it is not enough.

You get a cute HEA and are introduced to the great little town of Rosedale.

This is my first book by this author and definitely not my last.

Cool for the Summerby Elle Waters is book 1 in the Rosedale Seasons series. After their friends Jack and Pete go on their honeymoon, Beck and Van agree to housesit together for two months.

Beck and Van agree to a friends with benefits relationship for the summer even though Beck is a relationship guy and Van is not. I liked these two together a lot. I think it would have been nice to see a little more romance. However, I was happy when Van pulled his head out of his butt. I’m looking forward to reading more about this little town. I’ll also make sure to read Jack and Pete’s story.

Beck is a young man drifting through life. He has a degree and solid family behind him but he hasn't found anything that has sparked enough passion to make him stay. Donavan is at a standstill. His acting career transitioning and he is exploring writing but he isn't sure what move to make. Both of them end up house and dog sitting for their friends. And the town of Rosedale challenges everything they thought they wanted for themselves. Beck sees the chance to set down roots and build something for himself outside of his family's influence and Donovan has a chance to find the love that he has always wanted. I loved the characters in this book and I can't wait for more books in this series

I enjoyed Beck and Donovan’s spicy summertime fling. Beck was especially lovely and Van was especially aggravating, but together they were pretty amazing. I loved the beginning, the meeting was cute and the chemistry off the charts and the ending which was wonderfully romantic. The middle dragged a bit for me with Donovan being frustratingly stubborn, it just went on too long for me personally. A fun read, with a great setting, engaging writing, and a lovely HEA.

This was a thoroughly enjoyable "nice"read! By this I mean it flowed really well but no dramatic drama's!
I liked the small town Rosedale which came across as a great place to live. Donovan and Beck were great MC's who when they find themselves both house-sitting agree to a no strings roommates with benefits situation! However their arrangement soon begins to feel like a relationship! A nice low angst storyline that was perfectly paced.

Cool for the Summer is the first book in the Rosedale Seasons series by Elle Waters.
After their friends Jack and Pete go on their honeymoon, Beck and Donovan agree to housesit together for two months. What starts out as roommates with benefits quickly evolves into something much deeper. While Donovan is a hook up kind of guy, Beck is more a relationship guy.
I loved the small town setting that this story takes place in.

This book has a sweetness to it in the way of Beck. He has a sweet disposition that I enjoyed tremendously. Donovan is a great character, as well, just a little more resolved in his ideas. Together a sort of opposites attract situation is happening. Really strong support from the background characters also helps to make this an enjoyable reading. The HEA that develops is so worth the wait and I appreciate that it came without too much of a struggle. I voluntarily reviewed an arc of this book.

A sweet, cute, slow-burn romance. Not a complicated plot, but just 2 people finding their way to each other. Elle Waters delivered what she told she would.
For this being a summer fling, fuck buddies situation, they only fell into bed together after the 50% marker, which I appreciated because not all books tagged 'slow-burn' are that. I also loved seeing all the characters from 'His Coffee Shop Crush' return.
Defintely going to read more books by this author.

What could go wrong with two strangers, in a small town setting?? Denial, heat, denial and hea!! The chemistry between Van and Beck is crazy. With their dual doggy sitting for the summer, we get to see these two break down personal hangups and learn that they do deserve more. Lots of cookies were made and consumed in this fluffy cute story!

A cute quick read. Start as strangers, to friends, to friends with benefits, to lovers. You can tell they loved one another, but Van had a hard time opening his heart again. Overall, I liked the book. There were times where I did not like Van’s attitude or the things he said towards Beck. But overall good little read.
