DRACULA MEETS DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES! "In Blood Will Tell, Jean Lorrah creates an intriguing blend of police procedural, science fiction, and romance with a heroine as strong and appealing as Clarice Starling in Silence of the Lambs. Comparable to the vampire mysteries of P. N. Elrod and Tanya Huff, this novel is a must-read for the discriminating fan."--Margaret L. Carter, Author, The Vampire in Literature "...Blood Will Tell is the best read I've had in several months.... When I finished it, I wandered around my house from stack to stack of books disconsolately looking for another book that good. There wasn't one. I wish every book on the stands was this satisfying, this exciting and profound. "I love this book. It's right." --Jacqueline Lichtenberg, Author, Those of My Blood, Boxmaster
Jean Lorrah is a science fiction and fantasy author. She has produced several Star Trek novels and often collaborated with Jacqueline Lichtenberg. Her most recent work with Lichtenberg is on the Sime/Gen Universe. Her fantasy series The Savage Empire, from the 1980s, is mostly solo work. She is also a professor of English at Murray State University and received her PhD from Florida State University.
This is likely the worst book I have ever read. And I didn't even really read it. I skipped huge chunks to get through it. Blood Will Tell has allegedly won a number of awards but it was so awful to read I can only assume it won as it was the only book in the running. Fuck, it was so bad.
I would not reccomend this book to anyone. I could not think of a single person that would like it.
It is so horribly, badly written it's nearly unfathomable. The plot is completely transparent, the writing is badly paced and is an effort to read that there is just no character development at all. There's a kiss from the romantic interest and there's a murder suicide in the first 30 pages... but the writer builds no tension, she just writes it like a 5 year old telling a story from school and it sucks. There's no emotion and the progression through the story is so forced. It is poorly constructed in every way.
There is a bit of social commentary through out that is in very poor taste, commenting on race and sexuality and it just misses the mark by a mile. I found it inappropriate and outdated, especially the shaming of sex workers. Other comments about sexism that show the author just doesn't understand the complexities of any of these issues.
This book was so fucking bad, the only reason I tried to finish it is because I have some sort of complex about leaving books unfinished. Even when I hate them.
I had only four words to say when I finally completed this book and that was, "Well, that was shit." Even though thorough research had been done on how the work of small town police proceeds, I felt through the entire book as though it was written by a teenager. I kept hoping that the book would change my mind about it if I read further, but to no avail. I couldn't believe the reviews that were written at the front. It got me hyped for a book that had no character development, where relationships seemed forced or ridiculously escalated, and where there didn't seem to be much buildup towards the end. I wish I could rate it lower.
I thought it was just perhaps a little too long and leisurely (though that is a nice change from constant slam-bang action, and slow-build is not bad) but I gave it major points for (in paranormal) having a heroine who is a great cop because of her analytic and deductive abilities and using her brain, and thinking things through is key in the plot.
