I joined in Samsung in 2015, just a few months after this book was published. Several people in the office had copies, and I was interested in diving into it at some point. I guess that point is now.
This book covers a good deal of Samsung’s foundational history, and further covers the various more recent phases that brought Samsung into the global business league. It articulates the shift from a second rate manufacturer to a leader in many product categories. I appreciated the chairman’s candor is admitting that much of Samsung’s success resulted from the carelessness of its rivals and some good old fashioned luck. Its ability to be a fast follower and scale big is really its core competency. The current frontier of trying to become a true leader, innovator, and disruptor in the space is the most challenging, and in many ways runs contrary to everything Samsung knows and lives.
I was particularly integrated in readying about the Corporate Strategy Office and the Global Strategy group, because I have or am doing time in both of those. I often quip that I learn more about my job from the news than from actually doing it. I did learn a few things about the founding and operations of my own group, and that helped to explain a few things that had been on my mind.
All in all, a decent rundown of what Samsung is and how it functions in the market, but it often reads like a marketing brochure or a propaganda tract. Even though there are some suggestions for improvement in the latter section, there was too much effulgent praise and admiration for it to be considered a truly dispassionate study.
The book is written with the style of a report, so it's not really interesting for non-business people. The content is arranged and written in an easy way to understand with not many difficult terms. There are charts and tables used to help readers to summarise ideas, which is very convenient. For business people, this is a good book to learn how Samsung, under President Lee Kun Hee, recovered from economic crisis and restructured itself to improve as it is today. However, for me, I'm not going to read this book the second time since the style is quite boring to me.
Oh my God. I couldn't finish it and decided to put in to my DNF list, which I rarely do. Super dry. No story or anecdotes at all. Just plain business terminology.
Good content, well researched, but unfortunately poorly written. There is a lot of duplication throughout the book. 250 pages, with 150 pages of content.
It feels like more than half of the book’s content is repeated. It just keeps reiterating the same point made by the early chapters, I was continuously hoping to find something new in the chapters that follow and it fails me terribly. Having said this, I can’t be sure if there is any other book that describes Samsung organization better. I am also in doubt if the content of the book is written based on a neutral stance.
Total failure and misunderstanding. Written by Korean fanatics who praise slave labor system. It is unbelievable to me - how Koreans can be objective when writing about Koreans? It is a pity that there was no no-Korean author.
