What do a grave robbery, a fiendish invocation, a coveted 7", a feral moose and a piece of shit wheelchair have in common?  A house made of tainted flesh, of course!  Pulsing with blood and driven by a black beating heart, savage revenge is on the warpath.  Brutal, grisly and wickedly entertaining, this book is pure metal.

Michael Faun's BLACK HEART METAL MONSTER is a surreal and high-voltage dose of pulpy black metal horror. Imagine Edward Lee caught in a haunted jam-room of full of speakers blasting Darkthrone loud enough to conjure whatever evil sludge lurks in the bowels of the earth. Let it rip. The prose is sharp and detailed in just the right ways to keep the story tense, but what really brought this book to life for me was the overall metal band atmosphere that Faun brings to life and the originality of the black metal world in which we find ourselves. I went searching for a dark blast of metal horror and I found it. And it consumed me.

This was a lot of fun, it didn't take itself too seriously and offered a lot of horror and gore within a well written story. Being a fan of Black metal after I saw the description I immediately had to read this and it delivered with a gauntleted fist to the face! If you like black metal and/or horror read this, it's one hell of an enjoyable story!

I will preface this review by stating that the author of this brief exercise in body horror is a super friendly, humble and unassuming Swede guy whom I just can't seem to envision raising his voice to anyone, ever. He's just that nice.

This novella, released through Dynatox Ministries, is a portrait of a black metal band that strikes a nerve with its audience through shock value, on stage rituals involving animal carcasses, not unlike real life metal bands of the similar extremes such as Mayhem and Gorgoroth. Where things veer away from Lords of Chaos territory though, are when they find themselves housed within a gigantic biological body of meat and putrefaction. Imagery is king here and once Faun gets going, he's able to paint Boschean pictures of hubris and decadence. His extreme metalk characters are also appropriately named, from Skinleaper to Throatbutcher.

I can't find the way to review this book without spoiling most of it so I'll just keep it short: it's surreal and bizarre and so awesome in so many wrong ways, you cannot help but love it. The characters are great, specially if you already are somewhat familiar with the scandinavian black metal scene; if so, they become amazing. The ending was sort of unexpected and the way the story goes back and forth in time and space, really helps develop a full-circle story in few pages. Really fucking cool. Go read it. Now!

This black metal-immersive short horror work is an entertaining romp of ick, creeping horror (for the characters) and humor. Black metal aficionados may spot some real world events and elements in Monster, which further injects believability and impressive focus into this worth-owning novella.

So, I watched the Lords of Chaos film. Then, I watched a short black metal documentary by some internet dude that I'd never heard of. Then, I listened to some Emperor records. And then, after that, I read Jonathan Fortin's Requiem in Frost. After that wonderful book, I was looking for a new read and I found this gem tucked away in my Kindle library. Since I was already on a black metal kick, which I normally go on pretty much every year when the weather turns cold and dreary (I know, that sounds so cliche', but I really do it! Every winter used to be Russian Funeral Doom but it's been Black Metal and for the last couple of years, Norwegian Black Metal in particular). Of course, this book involves Black Metal and is set amidst Norway's harsh climes. Here we find some strange-goings-on with a metal band who set out to take their occult leanings to the next level. Total, chaotic awesomeness ensues and pulls us into the maelstrom with it. I found this book dark, strange, hilarious, fun, and uplifting. If you are a fan of metal and weird books as I am, I definitely recommend Black Heart Metal Monster! :)

It started out great but then things got seriously confusing. There are pieces of the story that take place months (or years?) before the current events but no indication of time is given. You just get confused until you kinda piece things together but as soon as you start understanding the time jumps, you get thrown into an even more confusing tale of the grotesque explained like if the author had a bad dream about it and was trying to describe it to you while being drunk and in a hurry.
The names of the characters sounding like you ordered Mayhem on Wish didn't help.
And the cheesy ending was probably the worst part.
All in all, it had potential but ended up being a total mess.

I recently started listening to Black Metal, and while I was looking for books on that topic, this book appeared. For the price, what did I have to lose? This book is great! I could visualize everything the author was describing! I'm still in shock of how good it was!
