This book focuses on practices in the workplace, but it can easily be adapted to personal relationships because the jumping off point IS compassionately relating to others in a working environment. Being aware of our authentic selves and building our friends and loved ones up rather tearing them down is a great place to start cultivating peaceful and open relationships. I listened to Better Places and it's fantastic. The narrator can make or break a book and nonfiction can be especially tricky. The narrator here is very good.

I highly recommend Better Places for a fresh approach to communication.

While Rasmussen has some great ideas, the book in general seemed too short. I wish he made it more detailed and more engaging. Out of all the chapters, Chapter 11 was my favorite. I wish it was discussed more.

Thanks for the giveaway read!
In Better Places: Building Stronger Communities with Authenticity and Compassion, Robert Rasmussen presents a compelling blueprint for fostering genuine connections and resilience within communities. With a blend of personal anecdotes, research, and practical strategies, Rasmussen emphasizes the importance of authenticity and compassion as cornerstones for creating thriving environments that uplift individuals and unite communities.

The book is structured around the core principles of building strong relationships, embracing vulnerability, and fostering inclusivity. Rasmussen's writing is accessible and engaging, making complex concepts easy to understand for readers from all backgrounds. His personal stories add warmth and relatability to the narrative, illustrating how these principles can be applied in everyday life to effect positive change.

One of the strengths of Better Places is its actionable approach. Each chapter concludes with tangible strategies and exercises that encourage readers to reflect on their own communities and consider how they can contribute to a culture of authenticity and compassion. This practical aspect sets the book apart, allowing readers to actively engage with the material rather than passively consume it.

Rasmussen also highlights the significance of diversity in building strong communities. He champions the idea that embracing different perspectives enriches the communal experience and strengthens bonds among individuals. This emphasis on inclusivity is particularly relevant in today’s increasingly polarized society, making the book a timely read for anyone looking to foster understanding and connection in their community.

However, while the concepts presented are valuable, some readers might find the book occasionally repetitive, as similar themes are revisited throughout the chapters. A tighter editing process could have helped streamline the narrative and enhance its overall impact. Additionally, some readers may desire more in-depth case studies or examples of successful community-building initiatives to further illustrate the principles discussed.

Overall, Better Places is an inspiring and thought-provoking read that serves as a call to action for individuals seeking to make a positive impact in their communities. Robert Rasmussen’s heartfelt insights and practical guidance make this book a valuable resource for anyone looking to cultivate stronger connections and create a more compassionate world. For those passionate about community development and personal growth, Better Places offers a refreshing perspective on what it takes to build a better future together.

Excellent Book

An enlightening and inspirational story following the author’s journey to a “better place.” This is a community filled with compassion and authenticity. It is about showing empathy and improving relationships. We are here to love and serve one another in a non-controlling environment without egoism, competition, judgment, or violence. Americans have evolved into that.

The author learned a lot about communities and discovered tools through the Nonviolence and Nonviolent Communication (NVC), humanism and humanistic psychology, willful interdependence, evolutionary culture, and general faith in people. I found this to be very interesting to learn about, especially due to being a fan of psychology.

The moral of the story is to practice unconditional love to both ourselves and to others, to reveal our true selves and coexist together, and show authentic compassion.

Recommended.

great book

Insightful, well developed, interesting, helpful and many other words are the ones that I would use to describe this great book, that helped me develop more knowledge and abilities about urban planning, design, and how the environment shapes us as human beings. Robert Rasmussen's engaging and accessible writing style, made this book really enjoyable because its easy explanation of such complex topics such as urban planning.
Also, the use of real life examples that this book provided helped me as a reader comprehend and understand the topics better. Overall, this urban planning book that considers technical, social, economic, and environmental factors for successful communities could be a great source of information that appeals to planners, architects, policymakers, and anyone interested in urban living. Recommended.

It is always possible to make a company better and to make a workplace more comfortable and equitable for those who spend time in it. The author of this book uses the concept of Ahisma to explain how he made his own workplace better. It is in part a lesson plan on how to promote a forward-thinking attitude, but it is also an explanation of how to make a team more productive by encouraging them to strive toward the same goals.

By promoting the spirit of interconnectivity and harmonious existence, a company can become a thriving ecosystem that grows together. Profitability and success will be the byproducts of that. This book is an amazing blueprint that will let you easily adopt that strategy, regardless of the niche or industry in which you operate.

Better Places apports a sense of compassion and guidance that I haven't found in other books. Rasmussen focuses in many aspects over the chapters, writing with simplicity about complicated subjects, digging deep into the wellness of communities, and most important, how to achieve a positive balance.

It was an interesting read, it's not the typical business book. Even though the reading goes back and forth on this subject, the author explores dilemmas societies and companies are experiencing on a daily basis and proposes solutions looking at the issues from different angles.

Definitely, a recommended read for entrepreneurs and beginner leaders because the ideas displayed in this book can be of great help and applicable in many situations.

Better Places by Robert Rasmussen is a business leadership book with a difference. It leans strongly into the Buddhist and Hindu philosophical concept of ahmisa, or non-violence and respect for all living things. Based on this compassionate belief system and way of life, Rasmussen demonstrates how it can guide businesses and workplaces to be a force for real good and create a healthy and positive working environment. With a strong focus on relationships, communication and empathy, this book demonstrates that big business does not have to be cut-throat. Rasmussen includes plenty of practical tools and learning points which will enable readers to implement his advice practically. I am giving this book a well-deserved five out of five stars.

I love the message and background of this book. I think it is essential for all of us to seek work environments where we can be who we are, where we live in respect and of course, where there is never room for violence or abuse. In this book, the author seeks to make us understand how human connections and their truths are handled, he talks about the importance of non-violence and humanity, and how this brings us closer to having honest and empathetic relationships, which I believe is essential to have real and lasting bonds. For me, this book is a call to work on the spirit and empathy, to understand how we relate and why many times, this can generate the end of a company and how to love and serve will lead you to a complete and connected life.

A short and succinct memoir/growth book that focuses on using compassion and a respect for all living things as a foundation for being a business person interacting with their community. I really respect the ideals presented in this book and think it's important to use your business to benefit and contribute to a community instead of only drawing from it. These kinds of businesses are required for a vibrant community that comes together in times of stress and struggle. The writing is simple and accessible without many frills or extraneous details.

A big thanks goes to the author, Robert Rasmussen, the publisher, Advantage books, and Goodreads for the privilege of winning Better Places in a giveaway.

I thought this was a very good read. Robert Rasmussen outlines how to just do good with your community and your work. It's not hard. It's a short read, but Rasmussen outlines everything so well. Have compassion in your work, CARE about your work, and it will get you far. Building a community also gets you far - in your career as well as in your personal life. I think people forget to do a lot of these things, and so I appreciate Rasmussen outlining everything out. It's so easy. We can do better and should do better!

I loved the title and was intrigued. However this book did not resonate with me at all. It felt superficial and light (also small in page numbers). Everything was familiar and not enough depth for me to have key takeaway new learnings. Thank you to #netgalley and the publisher for an ARC.
