Henry Davies lives for the law—until a stolen kiss at a masquerade changes everything. The spirited beauty vanishes, leaving him longing for more. But life-altering news convinces him their encounter is destined to remain a bittersweet memory.
Matilda Brennan, London’s beloved actress, hides a secret that could destroy her career and her family. A grumpy yet alluring stranger sweeps her off her feet at a masquerade, but she must protect her heart to safeguard her family’s future.
Unexpectedly reunited at a Christmas house party, Henry and Matilda have a second chance at love. As their desire rekindles and secrets simmer, will their passion be enough to overcome the truth that could tear them apart?
Rebecca writes sexy, emotional contemporary and historical romances about flawed characters brave enough to live outside the lines and embrace the messy and complicated bits of life and love. Also, there’s kissing.
She’s a champion of Byronic heroes, a wanderlust connoisseur, a hopeless romantic, and is epically losing the battle of conquering her TBR pile (okay, TBR closet). Rebecca lives in New Hampshire with her husband and baby daughter.
When not writing or reading, she loves ghost hunting shows, hiking around New England, and scouring stores for a cute dress with pockets.
Thanks to BookSirens for a copy of this novella and this is my freely given opinion.
Henry Davies is a man married to duty. As the eldest son in his family, that was drilled into him, and he has lived by the code of duty all his life - to his family, and ultimately to the law. Then one night, despite his protests, he was forced out on a night of gaiety by cohorts, at Vauxhall. As he is trying to figure out a way to get back to the comfort and privacy of his rooms, he collides with a red headed beauty who changes his outlook on life forevermore.
Matilda Brennan is London's darling on stage. She is a talented actress, but is being hounded by a man who is blackmailing and abusing her, because she has a family to care for and secrets that could ruin her life and family if they were to come to light. She is running from him that night at Vauxhall when she collides with Henry, and they share a soul shattering kiss.
Despite this, they end up separating, but not sharing names, and despite hopes, not expecting to see each other again.
Life goes on, and for Henry, that means the sudden discovery that he has inherited an Earldom, and he prepares again to do his duty and take up the Earldom and all the responsibilities that it entails, including finding a suitable wife. But before he does so, he is asked by one of his cohorts to attend a house party held by a duke, to help said duke with a legal conundrum. Thanks to the fates, Matilda is forced by her blackmailer to attend the same house party as the entertainment, causing her to leave her beloved family at Christmas. There, she and Henry reunite and their initial attraction continues to bloom, and when Henry discovers the situation Matilda is in, he becomes her knight in shining armour and saves her from her abuser.
A cute Christmas themed, bit of grumpy-sunshine, insta love, virgin hero love story.
I enjoyed this sweet Christmastide romance novella with its love at first sight and grumpy-sunshine tropes. The plot is well written with likable characters and a bit of steam. Henry is a reserved, virginal hero whose life is turned upside down when he meets the straightforward, outgoing Tilly. I liked the chemistry between the two from the start. The ending came a bit too quickly for me, but otherwise a good start in this series an enjoyable quick read that I am happy to recommend!
Henry Davies is a dutiful, ambitious barrister who loves his organised life in solitude. When he's blackmailed into attending a masquerade ball in Vauxhall with his colleagues, he's not too happy about it, but that all changes when a beautiful redhead crosses his path and steals his heart at first sight. After a dance in the woods, a magical kiss and a promise to meet again next summer without revealing their identities, they part ways and return to reality. Soon afterwards, Henry inherits a run-down earldom and has to face new challenges. When a colleague asks Henry to take on one last job for him, Henry reluctantly agrees and travels to the house party of a duke. Matilda "Tilly" is a popular actress who had to leave her home in Ireland because of her juicy secret and moved to London with her chaotic siblings. Tilly would do anything for her family. When her manager, who knows her secret, blackmails her into spending Christmas with him at a house party, she has no choice but to agree. There, however, she meets Henry again, the man of her dreams, whom she could not forget after their meeting in Vauxhall. But he is an earl and she is a ruined actress...
I received a free ARC of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own and left voluntarily.
The fabulous fairytale about how a disciplined stick-in-the-mud met the chaotic redhead of his dreams. An enchanting romance set in the season of miracles!
Henry - eldest son of a captain and barrister - is on a regimented path towards becoming attorney general when his colleagues convince him to an hour at Vauxhall. A masquerade he will not soon forget. Tilly - Irish born actress and up-and-coming star of the London stages - is hiding from the crook who’s blackmailing her when she literally runs into Henry. A collision of epic proportions.
A man ruled by responsibility, and a woman bravely forging ahead even when there’s barely hope. A most magical, albeit bloody, meetcute under the stars and an impossible promise to meet again - they don’t even know the other’s name. Still a virgin, he’s convinced there was no place in his life for love, only duty. Having experienced passion and its consequences before, she’s just looking for peace. Accidentally crossing paths again at a duke’s Christmas house party, they want nothing more than to be together. But there’s no future for a newly titled earl and a Drury Lane star, is there?
Ever since reading ‘In Want of a Wife’ I was wondering how Henry found his wife, and this novella does not disappoint! This author is quickly becoming one of my favourites! Her style and wit are flawless, her stories fresh with colourful vivid imagery and a delicious splash of steam, and her characters are lovable but far from perfect. Since most of her stories aren’t set in stuffy London, every book is like a mini vacation! If you haven’t read the Society of Scandalous Brides series yet, I highly recommend checking it out! A wonderful collection of witty and moving romances!
Henry Davies lives for the law, determined to become the best barrister in London. He rarely socializes and reluctantly, joins his friends to celebrate a birthday, where he meets a mysterious woman. A stolen kiss at a masquerade changes everything, but they don't exchange names, only a promise to meet again.
Soon after, Henry inherits the title of Lord Delvin. His new responsibilities make a reunion with his mysterious lady seem impossible. Matilda (Tilly) Brennan, a successful actress with a secret that could ruin her, also longs to see him again.
Fate reunites them at a Christmas party, but can an actress and an Earl have a future together? A beautiful chance meeting between two people who aren’t destined to be together but circumstances and unexpected events give them a second chance at love. Henry's feelings for Tilly transform him, making him wish for a life he never imagined. Their chemistry is undeniable.
When Tilly's secret is revealed, Henry accepts it without hesitation. They plan a future together, with Henry finding joy with Tilly and her family. Their love changes them both, their future looks happy and bright.
The author beautifully crafts Henry and Tilly’s characters. The grumpy barrister and the joyful actress may seem mismatched, but their romance is believable, sweet and heartfelt.
I predict a promising start to a new series, showcasing the author’s talent for heartwarming storytelling. I received a free copy this book from the author, and am voluntarily leaving a review, all thoughts and opinions are my own.
In pursuit of a Christmas bride by Rebecca Paula is a prequel to the scandalous brides series. At the end of a busy day, Lord Henry just wants to go home and dive in to his lawbooks he has goals and feels this is the way to reach them. sadly, for Henry, his friends have other ideas and even “dangle a carrot on a stick” to get Henry to go. at the same party is an actress Matilda unlike other actresses, she is virtuous and is only doing it to support her family, and she also didn’t want to attend the party that night, but little do both of them know it will change their lives and eventually their mind about the lonely life they’re both living. I have to do a fast review because I am having trouble with my screen reader but just know this is a fun entertaining read. I have read both books in the series so far and not only or they funny. I really love that the author Rebecca Paula makes her characters distinctive, and as original as real people. Matilda is independent and Henry is quirky, this is not a love at first sight book but definitely attraction at first glance. The story builds as it goes and I loved all of it.
In this Regency romance, love is only a stolen kiss away. Henry Davies has no time for socializing. He is consumed by his work in law. He is coerced into attending a masquerade party, and by mere chance, literally runs into an Irish lass, Tilly, in the garden. Yes, it is love at first sight. It will be several months until they happen to be at the same Christmas party. He has now inherited the title of Earl, and Tilly is but an actress hiding a shameful secret. Yet love will find a way. This romance is a quick read. The storyline is a bit farfetched, but nevertheless interesting, as it plays out. The characters are likable. Tilly is a hardworking actress, trying to take care of her siblings. Henry is a dashing lawyer, unaware of his own good looks. A format longer than a novella would have allowed more elements that might have enhanced the story. Sometimes, it seemed like details were missing.

Tropes: grumpy MMC/sunshine MFC; virgin MMC; MFC with a past; masquerade; house party Steam level: 2-3 1st in a series
3.5 stars I can't quite bump up. I'm a sucker for a by-the-book barrister who comes undone, and Henry is one of those "grumps with a heart of gold" I always end up liking. MFC Tilly is also easy to root for. But the first 60% or so moved at a pretty slow pace, with some repetitive dialog, a few clunky phrases, and ruminating that could have been trimmed down, and then the last 40% had everything happen all at once. The ending was cute but very rushed, leaving me wondering if loose ends would be wrapped up in the next book. It felt like this had originally been intended to be a full-length book but then the author realized it had to be edited to novella length.
It's a sweet story, though, and I liked Tilly and Henry's chemistry. Not a bad way to end the reading year.
A sweet beginning to this new Rebecca Paula series, Henry Davies is a very rigid solicitor with grand plans to become attorney general. His plans go awry when he reluctantly agrees to go with his friends to Covent Gardens to celebrate a birthday and Drury Lane actress Matilda Brennan runs right into him. This collision sparks a flame neither one can resist. They don't share names, but one steamy kiss seals it for both of them.
I loved the characters and the faith they had in each other after such a brief meeting. Tilly has secrets, Henry becomes an Earl, they tackle a villain and get their HEA in this quick, sweet read. I always love a virgin-hero trope, and this did not disappoint. Next up in the series is all about Henry's scoundrel brother, Rafe Davies. Should be a fun ride with him.

It started with a masquerade, and two people were drawn together. Would Henry and Tilly see each other again? He was a barrister when she met him, and then, he inherited an earldom. Tilly was an actress with scandalous secrets. There was a villain making her life miserable. Would he get his comeuppance?
Being from different classes, did Tilly and Henry stand a chance? As fate would have it, they did meet again. What happened when Henry discovered Tilly’s secrets? For the answers, you would want to read this lovely, historical romance. I enjoyed the story and would recommend it. I finished the book in one sitting.
This novella shares a story about two lives whose paths cross but duty pulls them in different directions. They found each other once, can they find each other again? Henry and Lilly, each have to find a way to reconcile their sense of duty, and bind their paths with love. I liked this novella. I found myself wanting them to overcome obstacles, duty and forge a new path together. It was a delightful read. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Very short prequel but I knew that going in. In many ways this seemed like the “Readers Digest Condensed Book” (yeah, I’m that old…) of a novel. I wished there was a lot more world building and side stories that flesh out a good novel. And of course, it’s way too short but it is a prequel.
The only reason I deducted a star was the lack of development in the side stories and world building.

Henry Davies is a grumpy, serious barrister. Matilda Brennan is a respected actress and single mother (which is a secret). When they meet at a masquerade, they exchange a passionate kiss. By the time they meet again, at a house party, Henry had inherited an earldom. Will this give them a second chance to act on their instant attraction? How will Henry react to her secret and her large family? Quite an enjoyable opposites-attract romance. I received a copy of this book via BookSirens and voluntarily reviewed it.
Strange Ending. Uptight barrister Henry Davies reluctantly agrees to go with his friends to Vauxhall Pleasure Gardens as long as they don’t expect him to stay longer than an hour. However just before the hour is up a beautiful woman crashes into him and he falls heavily for her. Names are not exchanged and he doesn’t see her again for several months until a houseparty at which they are both present. I won’t give any spoilers away about what happened there but the novel inexplicably ends with them marrying secretly and then living apart.
Tilly is an actress with a secret, Henry is a barrister who lives life in black and white. They meet by accident and are smitten, but remain anonymous. A sweet period romance set in all of the usual venues - Vauxhall, a house party, etc - but because of her profession, her secret and her manager, and his sudden inheritance, it seems they cannot be together. This is a prequel, and I liked the protagonists so much, I would have preferred to spend more time with them than with the main character of book one. Enjoyable
The two main characters, an actor and an earl, Tilly and Henry, didn't seem to go together. However, they are instantly drawn to one another when they first meet. They have a lovely chemistry with one another. Their lives were meant to be together. I loved this short story. It is a beautiful prequel to the series.

All cuteness, a little dollop of imagination, lots of passion and yearning and you get a love story that's quite the read.
Henry is staid an very focused on succeeding in his career. He literally collides into Tilly to share a life altering kiss. Several months later, fate brings them together. Except not he's an Earl and she still has a secret to hide. The H and h are very endearing, passionate and understanding.
Fairly quick novella here where stuffy solicitor, Henry, meets a woman at a masquerade and never sees her again. And then it turns out that Henry has inherited an earldom and is busy with all his new responsibilities. Tilly is an actress at the theater who is being coerced by her stage manager to comply with all his demands so that he doesn’t reveal her scandalous secret. Tilly and Henry end up at the same Christmas house party and in the stormy weather, they get a few days without other guests around. They rekindle their acquaintance here and quickly fall in love, despite being all wrong for each other from a practical perspective. Easy fluffy read.
It may be Rebecca 's first book which is not spicy if I am not wrong.I enjoyed the book a simple story of villainy, by way of blackmailing a poor woman actually a famous actress ,and with a large family, simple love affair between her and the shy lawyer turned baron .This book like her other books are unique ,wittyand interesting.I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
This is a wonderful, heartwarming story of a man who never expected to become an earl and an actress with a big secret. The chemistry was fabulous between Henry and Tilly and there were some funny moments when they met. There are a lot of interesting characters in the story, a scene at Vauxhall Pleasure Gardens and a house party. I can't wait for the next book in the series.
different story of an icy hearted man and a respectable actress. I loved how they met, how they were reunited and how Henry protected her. Tilly and her family is adorably loud and I wished we could have had a “meet the family” scene. Simply wonderfu!
I received this story for free and these are my own opinions
Perfect Match! They were a pair of characters not meant to be together but the match was perfect and I loved Henry and Tilly and all they stood for. This is a prequel to the series and it is short but very nicely written and I am happy to recommend it for it's entertainment and enjoyment. I have just read an early copy of this book and am happy to post my voluntary review of it.
I loved this sweet and charming romance between the prim and proper Barrister/Earl, and his Drury Lane actress , with a shameful secret. They couldn’t be more different, but it was love at first sight between these two , and their relationship was one of pure delight! A blackmailing evil doer would like to expose her secret and ruin her life, but love will triumph in the end!
This was an absolutely delightful love story. From a humorous and very sudden first encounter, a special attachment began. Despite a past scandal and blackmail a beautiful romance occurs. I enjoyed the main characters' humorous and witty banter that has me chuckling often. I highly recommend reading!
The strength and the pleasure in reading this for me lies in the author`s finesse with dialogue, not to minimize any other aspects of Rebecca Paula`s impressive writing skills . I soon forgot I was reading and had to shake myself back to reality. Although short, it was a very enjoyable experience and well worth picking up as your next book.
Henry was magnificent. He was like a white knight on his powerful steed charging in to save Tilly from that awful lecherous villain. Well, it didn't happen quite that way, but it was stunning to see Henry fight for Tilly's virtue. The sudden proposal wasn't really sudden at all, because both parties were well and truly in love since that first kiss. Now , if that's not a grand fairytale love story
I don't know what is!!! Captivating! I voluntarily read a free copy of this book provided by book sirens and am giving an honest opinion .
This was a sweet story that kicks off a fun series. I enjoyed both of the characters especially Tilly. She is a complex character that shows how powerless some women were in that time. The story is spicy but not raunchy, which I appreciated. All in all, a good read.
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Yes at this time in England marrying an actress was scandalous. But to two lost souls meeting at a masked party it was fate. No their love never bloomed that night but fare what it is may have..... Tilly and Henry"s long lost love ....well read this well written short story to find out. It is worth the time.
A lovely short story of Henry and Tilly. The pre-curser to a new series. Henry is a barrister who suddenly becomes an Earl. Tilly is an actress with a past. Their sudden meeting erupts into a series of events that neither expected. They are always being separated. Good story, engaging and perky.
This is a prequel to the Society of Scandalous Brides series. Having read In Want Of A Wife, I was so happy to read this story. Do not read this before reading that book. Short and a little steamy, I really liked this story. Apart from Tilly’s manager, of course.
If you are a fan of second chance love stories like me, you will absolutely love this book. For Henry and Matilda it was a chance worth taking even though it looked like there won’t be a chance for them. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
