I mean, it’s not like any of this series are masterpieces, but I do find them amusing as nostalgia reading and seeing how differently I see them as an adult. However, this one is particularly cringe-able.
Molly, despite looking like the biggest frump on the planet according to the cover, has not one, but two boys all over her. Matt, who is sweet, but she’s not interested and Duncan who is the guy of her dreams. Aside from Duncan, Molly’s whose whole thing in life is dreaming of wearing her grandmother’s old dress to prom just doesn’t know what to do when Matt invites her to prom, but Duncan doesn’t because he’s flunking class and won’t be allowed to go. Horrors she might miss the prom, never mind it later transpires her best friend Maria secretly loves Matt. Molly is still stringing him along just in case while actively dating Duncan. Yes, Molly is the worst.
There’s a whole silly subplot where special snowflake Molly gets a job on the news and gets praised heavily over an essay about her grandmother and tradition. The only tradition Molly actually cares about is putting on a dress 😂. It’s just ridiculous honestly.
Duncan passes his class and tells Molly off for being selfish. Molly gets her prom and they live happily ever after.
None of the characters sound like kids. Both Duncan and Matt are rigid and behave like 40 year old men. I don’t know what the hell Molly sounds like. Not a teen girl, that’s for sure. Maybe a 60 year old woman doing an impression of one with all the grandma talk. Maybe Maria is the closest to a real seeming character, but that could be because she’s not in it much.

Dream Prom. The story of a selfish girl and her dick boyfriend.
All this girl thinks about is the prom - she even has a back-up date waiting in the wings which she doesn’t discourage for months even though her best friend likes him. Speaking of her best friend, I’m not sure why they are best friends because hey only scream at each other all the time. The bossiness in the friendship is over the top.
But the icing on the cake is when the not-always-understanding, stubborn, angry, needs-to-get-over-himself boyfriend yells at her and calls her selfish near the end (even though she’s spent the last month helping him pass English so he can graduate and take her to the prom). And then she thanks him! Thanks him? For belittling her? For being a major douche? No, for showing her she only thinks of herself and she should be thinking more about him. FFS. What were these books teaching us back on the 80’s!?!
