A Wishful Eye: A Novel
A Wishful Eye is a sweeping tale set in the United States during the antebellum years—when Christians took unpopular stands and engaged in illegal activity to care for the “least of these.”
In the years before the Civil War, abolitionists were considered radicals by the majority of Americans. When they couldn’t help the enslaved by persuading those in power to change the law, they broke it—risking all they had, including their own liberty, for the sake of others and working side by side with free Black people who risked their very lives to help others.
As many as five thousand runaways are believed to have escaped slavery by crossing the Ohio River into the rural areas north of the bustling river towns of Indiana through the Underground Railroad. Their stories have not been told until now.
Perfect for historical fiction lovers, A Wishful Eye brings to light little-known facts about the people and events in Kentucky and the Ohio River Valley region during this era.

This book pulled me straight into one of the most dangerous and inspiring times in American history. The courage of those who defied the law to help enslaved people find freedom is brought to life with such vivid detail that I could almost hear the whispers in the night and feel the urgency of each step north. A Wishful Eye is not just a story it’s a tribute to human bravery, sacrifice, and the relentless fight for justice. I couldn’t put it down and I can’t recommend it enough.

A great story that pulled me into the pages right from the beginning and it expanded my knowledge of the workings of the underground railroad in the southeastern Indiana area during that time period. I am looking forward to the next installment and highly recommend this book!

Debbie has been a friend for many years and I so enjoyed reading her long-awaited novel! Aside from just a few grammatical errors, I was instantly captured by the story and the characters, the elements of faith and God, and how it all came together in the end. The history was fascinating too!

Even though it is historical fiction, there were a lot of events that did take place. It’s also Christian fiction. A very good story.
