This was not an easy book to get hold of, but man, did it explain which kids go on to become readers. I found this invaluable as I helped to engender a love of reading for the younger members of my household. Things that help a child read a lot: Owning a bicycle. Yes, believe it or not. Living near a library. If you don't live within walking distance of a library but are able to get yourself there on a bicycle, you tend to go there more often than kids who would require a ride. If getting housing near a library is not in the cards, the next best thing is to have lots of reading material in the home, many varied options. And of course if you don't want to buy all those books, you can just develop a habit of regularly picking up a bunch of books from.......the library! Reading to the other members of your household is a further asset, helping to bring words to life.
