Bobby Jacobi was once San Francisco’s finest until he lost his hand rescuing a kidnap victim. Retired and divorced he finds love and a new career working as a life insurance fraud investigator. When what appears to be a clear cut case suddenly turns suspicious, Bobby’s old cop mind wakes up. The deeper he digs the stranger the case becomes, until he trusts nothing, not even himself. By the end of his search Bobby finds himself lost between the truth and what hides behind the veil of fog rolling in off the bay. There he tries to answer the question - what is the value of a man’s life?

I downloaded the Kindle book on a free promo and was happily astonished to find an involving, expertly written story. This guy knows how to write in first person and build scenes tangible enough for the reader to stand and look around in.

Bobby Jacobi's prosthetic is a nifty, er, hook that differentiates him from the ex-cop detective pack. Thanks to Matthews's writing, I believed every move Jacobi made and every thought that he had--and he had plenty of deep ones. The psychic connections and miraculous occurrences at the end kind of came out of left field, but by that time Matthews had me so engrossed in Jacobi's angst that I bought into all of it.

P.S. Butch is the best fictional cat since Damon Runyon's drunk dog-snatcher, Lillian. :D

P.P.S. Adding a disclaimer that I "read" this book with my ears (text-to-speech), not my eyes, so I can't vouch for the quality of the spelling, punctuation, etc.

Good story about an ex-cop

Too often the stories about ex-cops are similar --- not this one. This is about a life insurance and the agent who does the claims. It is very well written with characters that come alive. It will keep your interest throughout and perhaps remind you that you are not the only one with voices in your head !!!

Very good story. I was hooked right away. Good description on the homicide process and how
hard it is to keep separate from your personal life. I was intrigued til the end.

This book was four stars all the way through, and then the end was really odd, and didn't flow with the rest of the story.
