Every elementary teacher should read this book! The study of science, for both teachers and students, does not get any better than this! The fact that the explanation of the pedagogy is easily understood and the scientific "process" that children will create and participate in has the pedagogy behind it 100%! Children take an active role in their learning. Science, in this book, is based on the inquiry of students. Writing is integrated into every part of the scientific process, making the learning reflective and meaningful! Children build upon their own learning, step by step. Students build connections to the big ideas. They negotiate meaning and construct knowledge as they build the understanding for each investigation they undertake. The formal assessments offered by the authors are creative and show what children learn. I am thrilled the Town of Brookline has adopted this book with all the benefits of a Science Writing Heuristic approach to use in any elementary classroom!
