There some real zingers in this collection. This author is a very good descriptive writer too - you will definitely feel 100% immersed in each story. Word to the wise - do not read while having a meal. Mr Squid does gore VERY well.
Darkest Dimensions is a passable collection of bite-sized horror stories, some of which rise above the rest with clever premises and eerie atmosphere. Standout tales include This Channel Shouldn’t Exist, Je Te Vois, and The House Beneath the Basement.
The strongest entry, however, is A Beginner’s Guide to Blood Portals. While it features a fairly predictable twist, the narrative doesn’t stop there—it pushes past the reveal into something more intriguing. That continuation makes it memorable, and it leaves me wanting to know more about the character and the unsettling world it introduces.
Overall, the collection is uneven but worth dipping into for its highlights, especially if you enjoy horror served in quick, unsettling bursts.
There’s a certain appeal in stories that end just as you’re starting to feel comfortable, leaving you with the question, “and then what happened?”
I received this book as part of a promotion. I really enjoyed it! I think my three favorite stories were "Do Not Wake Up," "A Beginner's Guide to Blood Portals," and "The Devil's Dice." I like the variety of stories, especially the inclusion of some cosmic horror.
The only criticism I will offer is that some of the formatting is wonky on Kindle (at least when reading on mobile) and at least some of these stories must have first appeared on r/nosleep as there are still some links formatted from when they presumably were first published there.
A collection of stories from all kinds of horror: Mundane, extraordinary, uncomfortably in-between. Every story as good as the previous and taking you into a trip to new places. Very well-worth the read! I'm itching to read the author's other works!
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
I love horror books and read them all the time. This is THE BEST short story collection I've ever read! No lie. I will absolutely be reading the rest of his books! I will say there was a lot of unnecessary crying in almost every story. That got old lol. But otherwise they were all great!
I'm so hooked on these anthologies of terror. The original stories that you can't even begin to predict where you are going to be taken. So pack your bags and make sure you have your seatbelt tight, it's definitely going to be a bumpy and twisted ride!
A fun collection of bite-sized horror. A lot of the stories had great body horror in it that made me cringe, like the blood pool world. Great sci-fi concepts and weird inter-dimensional worlds with horrific entities and weird people.
