Billy Montgomery, a Houston-born New York transplant, aspiring novelist, and soon-to-be young divorcée is headed to Cancun for his sister's destination wedding with a severe case of bad luck, a broken heart, and a sunny disposition about it all. As Man of Honor, he's on a mission to make sure this weekend goes off without a hitch while shoving down his own feelings about being stabbed in the back by love.
Michael Evans, a mid-level public relations expert from Queens, can make anyone and anything look squeaky clean from the outside, but can he do it for himself? When he's asked to fly into Ohio to give a tear-jerking speech at his estranged father's funeral, he wonders if he's met his ultimate PR match that may just send him into a spiral of his painful past.
Through a meet-cute gone wrong, a truly unfortunate baggage mix-up, and a run in with TSA, they find themselves stuck on standby in a New York airport for days on end, waiting on a miracle to get them to their respective destinations. While being stranded between overpriced souvenir shops and underwhelming airport cuisine, they find themselves learning more and more about one other, as well as exposing their own personal baggage that they've been carrying for far too long.
Love, loss, grief, forgiveness, and well, the absence of all of the above drive Michael and Billy to emotional depths together. Can these two tackle the ins and outs of these feelings while also dealing with the possibility of their own blossoming romance?
I want more people to read this! This is a really solid queer, self-published romance and deserves the attention other romances get! It’s got the heart and humour!
Utterly charming, perfectly balances the rom with the com, one of the best books I've read this year.
Opposites attract after a series of chance encounters at JFK International Airport just before a major weather event strands everyone at the terminal for days. Heroes Billy Montgomery (high energy, high strung, ghostwriter who's trying to get to his sisters wedding in Cancun while avoiding thinking about his ex-husband) and Michael Evans (kind of a grump, PR professional, reluctantly on his way to Dayton, Ohio to eulogize his estranged father) bristle at first AND second meeting. But there's an undeniable attraction and the airport serves as a crucible for their personal issues and a forge that slowly melts their barriers and begins fusing them into a couple.
There is real depth of character as Davenport explores Michael and Billy's griefs and traumas, but it never comes off as too "angsty" or maudlin. And while the events are a fantastical romcom setup and it never purports to be real, it nevertheless achieves truth. Two standout scenes are basically monologues that both men deliver to the men in their lives that have wronged them and they are stunners.
But don't let the emotional truth that Davenport explores fool you into thinking this is just a tearjerker or a downer, it's not. There's crackling wit and banter throughout the entire book between Billy and Michael and with the various airport denizens and authorities (standout character being Addison, a gate agent-slash-bartender who serves as a guardian angel to our two guys).
This book is *criminally* under-the-radar. If you like MM romcoms, this should be at the top of your TBR.
This might be a different kind of review, because I’m so in my emotions right now. I’ve read two stories by Jeffrey K. Davenport, and both times, I’ve felt a strong emotional connection with his characters. I’m not sure how he does it, but I get incredibly invested in their lives and their happiness. Both Billy and Mikey are going through difficult times - for very different reasons - yet I felt connected to their grief and pain as if it were my own. Theirs is a story that seems guided by fate - or at least influenced by chance - from beginning to end.
I have things I need to process and get off my chest, so here are my thoughts:
1. I never expected to be so invested in a story about two guys stuck in an airport. Or a story that takes place almost completely IN an airport, for that matter. I will never fly through JFK and view it the same way.
2. This book is strangers to lovers in the most cataclysmic way and immaculately done. Normally, I’d probably find something about it unbelievable which would cause me to pull back, but that’s not the case here. I was all in and ready to lock them in their beloved airport bathroom forever.
3. Somehow, I think this is a romcom? I can’t recall the last time I laughed this much in a book that also ripped my heart out. Davenport’s humor adds perfect levity to seemingly dire and difficult situations.
4. Billy’s husband? F*ck that guy. (Don’t worry, they’re separated. No cheating.) I’m sure he didn’t set out to be such a manipulative, insensitive POS, but somewhere along the way, things changed. Exploring their past and learning about their relationship is heart wrenching yet so very relatable.
5. Mikey’s dad? See #4. Unfortunately he passed (not a spoiler) without realizing he missed out on knowing an amazing son and incredible guy. I’m a sucker for big scenes, and Mikey has one that starts his healing journey and had me sobbing into my pillow. So many big emotions in that moment.
6. I also happen to love a grand gesture, and while I anticipated this one to some extent, I was still blown away by it. It’s the perfect moment, weighted with so much potential, promise, and emotion.
7. I’d be lying if I said the number of times they leave their bags unattended didn’t make me nervous. 😬 Also, Addison deserves a raise.😂
*I voluntarily read a complimentary copy of this book*
Oh wow y'all, Meet Me in the Sky was INCREDIBLE! For a book that takes place almost entirely in an airport, I'm so impressed with how much Jeffrey K. Davenport made me FEEL with this one. If you love a character driven story with lots of banter, heartfelt moments, and absolutely beautiful writing, I highly recommend checking it out!
Michael and Billy were SO different, but honestly, I could not tell you which one of them I loved more. I could relate SO hard to Billy's neurotic need for control... that then rapidly spiraled into chaos when every single one of his plans falls through. His POV chapters had me laughing more than once, while his concerns about his inability to be loved again were so heartfelt. Meanwhile, I loved watching Michael go from annoyed indifference to full on fighting for a relationship with Billy. His struggles with grief are so raw and real, but I kind of love how he chooses to work through his feelings. And OMG, what a perfect opposites attract moment - both of these guys have something the other needs, and it was really beautiful seeing them find it. I was also kind of blown away by the creative spicy situations too - for some reason I went in thinking this was YA romance, but let me tell you, it is NOT.
What's truly masterful about Meet Me in the Sky is the setting - the majority of the book takes place in an airport when the two MCs get stuck there waiting out a hurricane. It's a little uncanny how freaking REAL it all is (I definitely got a little bit of secondhand anxiety about the whole situation), but it also creates the perfect forced proximity situation that I just loved. This book surprised me in the best way, and it NEEDS to go on your TBR RIGHT NOW.
This book is stupendous. The way it kicks off with Billy’s anxious ride to the airport had me taking deep calming breaths, the author has a brilliant knack for transporting you bang into the emotions of the characters
This is my first book by this author and it definitely won’t be the last. I was completely engrossed in the lives of the Billy and Mikey as they play out over a few days, mostly stranded at the airport. The author lays out the tale so well, taking us from irritation to intimacy between these two - I swear I couldn’t put it down - took a half day from work to read as much of it as I could. I loved how these two came to be each others rocks in the storm and I sort of miss them now that it’s over. I think I got a little greedy towards the end and needed more - maybe an epilogue or a window into their permanent situation.
If you’re looking for gripping, intimate romance with stellar banter and a series of fortunately unfortunate events that has these two MCs making their way to being together then I highly recommend reading this book.
Do you love epic love stories? Do you love laughing? Do you love an emotional journey that will make you cry and I mean sob and maybe even heal you a little bit. Then this is the book for you. Billy and Mikey have changed me a little bit. This morning I was literally sobbing. Two men broken by different things and figuring themselves out with each other. Sh*t while writing this review I might cry again who knows. Also Mikey’s feelings towards his dad connected with me on a level I may never be able to explain and showed how complex grief is. Like this books means more to me than I ever thought it would. Also Billy’s journey also connected with me that missing of familiarity but not the person and the complexity of things ending me as hell like damn I went in for a romcom and got maybe my favorite read of the year actually it is my favorite read of the year
Also Addison is the love of my life like literally everything to me. Top 3 side characters of all time this for sure.
Here are some quotes that I think need to be put out there they are out of context but important
• “I came to Jesus about ten minutes ago, thank you.” “Oh, no. Absolutely not.”“That man had nothing to do with that. All props go to me.”
• “SPENCER: i loveeee being in gay people’s business MICHEAL: Something you have in common with the US government”
• “I want every slutty detail. I want to know what he was wearing. I want to know who did what first. I wanna know what the weather was like. I wanna know the color of the tip.”
• “Is everything not complicated? Being a girl, gay, or they in your twenties is inherently difficult by default.”
• “Is the suffering worth the possibility of something great?”
I absolutely adored “Meet Me in the Sky” by Jeffrey K. Davenport, and I’m not exaggerating when I say this might be one of the best MM romcoms I’ve ever read. Billy Montgomery is a Houston-born New York transplant, an aspiring novelist, and a soon-to-be divorcée heading to Punta Mita for his sister’s destination wedding with terrible luck and a broken heart he’s trying to ignore. Michael Evans is a PR professional from Queens who can spin anything except his own pain, especially as he prepares to speak at the funeral of his estranged father. Thanks to a meet-cute gone wrong, a baggage mix-up, TSA chaos, and being stuck on airport standby for days, these two end up stranded together in a New York airport, slowly unpacking their emotional baggage while waiting for flights that may never come. What follows is a story about love, grief, forgiveness, and unexpected connection that completely swept me off my feet.
This book won me over immediately. The writing flows so effortlessly, it’s funny and charming without trying too hard, and Billy and Michael feel so real and layered that I truly felt like I knew them inside and out. Their first meeting is wild and hilarious, yet still grounded and believable, and the relationship that blossoms between them is genuinely beautiful, a love story for the ages. Billy’s divorce and Michael’s complicated grief over his recently deceased father hit me hard, and yes, I cried like a little bitch more than once. The spice is hot, intimate, and full of emotion, with a certain chapel scene that was delightfully blasphemous and unforgettable. Every intimate moment felt loving, realistic, and earned. This was the easiest five stars I’ve ever given. I have no notes. It’s full of heart and soul, it moved me to my core, and Jeffrey K. Davenport truly did his big one with this book.
I picked this up as a freebie and usually I leave these on my TBR for a moment when I am lost about what to read. Well, I am so glad I read it straight away as this was a very fun read. Way better than I expected to be honest. Billy made me laugh out loud a few times and I just loved the airport setting very much. I think even though they were stuck in the same pace I still got some kind of road trip vibes from it, which is one of my favourite tropes. I also liked the fact that whist it felt like a light read and slightly romcon, it still dealt with some heavy topics and I could see the characters emotional growth within themselves as they both nudge each other towards being better people. However, I was not too keen on the last part because I feel like the wrong person chased the other. This is just my personal opinion though and I did like the book a lot. Someone already mentioned this in another review but I also got quite anxious when they left their luggage unattended here and there.
Meet Me in the Sky is the most criminally underrated book I've ever read. It is beautiful in the way it deals with uncomfortable loss, resolving a past marriage, and exploring a new relationship. It's part rom-com, part heavy character work, and an incredible 4 day romance story.
Notes (with spoilers) dual pov, two gay men 28 year old divorcee freelance ghostwriter, black and from texas; works in public relations and marketing, grew up in queens is this guy me, between peeing multiple times before the plane boards to reading a clock about as well as a second grader billy is somewhat unhinged and kind of insane. i love him this book is so funny. banter is chef’s kiss michael’s mom and dad shared an expensive cologne queens accent vs texan accent i could see this being a romcom movie the characters feel so real and relatable due to their internal monologue and dialogue the banter is bantering, it simultaneously feels so real while also maintaining the romcom vibes got married 6 years ago (22), started dating 3 years before that (19) these characters feel like they’ve come to life billy is big into anecdotes, michael is big into history and facts one going to a funeral, one to a wedding, both help each other with their problems (rectifying his feelings surrounding his deadbeat/estranged father's death and divorce from the man he thought was forever) omg billy ghost wrote a perfect passage for mikey’s situation which already mikey knows and mikey tells him he should write for real. also buys the book so the real author can sign it. such a sweet and perfect scene do it in an airport bathroom and the chapel nicknames billy texas and billiard vague hotel scene where michael bottoms, they both shower and wait to eat, lube and condom, more detailed scene later where billy bottoms some math isn’t mathing at the end with flights, also wish authors stopped using couple to mean few ends with some romcom cheesiness of processing feelings in front of billy and his family think it ended in a great spot (though I was expecting more book since it said 22 mins left)
timeline: monday - flight cancelled tuesday - airport shenanigans wednesday - go to hotel, flight thursday 4:50pm thursday - reschedule flight to late friday morning friday - calls his ex at 1am, says he can catch the earlier flight? (like an earlier friday flight than the one he booked orrrr?), says he wishes he could climb into bed and know they’ll be ok for at least no one more day, writes a letter saying he’s probably landing by the time michael reads this saturday - Wedding
This is my first book by this author, and I doubt it’ll be my last. The emotional connection you have with both his writing and his characters was such a surprise for me. It was cute, endearing, emotional, hilarious at times, and overall a great read.
The private speech that Michael gets out about his dad…wow. The author has written that incredibly well. It’s powerful, emotional, and you feel a sense of pride for Michael.
The whole wetsuit thing was a bit Far-fetched, and I was worried it was going to get ridiculous, but I was wrong. It was unexpectedly funny, especially when he’s running through the gate with flippers on. The strangers-to-lovers transition was immaculately done, and you can’t help but dive all in with them both.
Considering this whole book is pretty much in an airport terminal, it is surprising how much happens. The author has such a way with words to make this story so magical.
DNF at 32%. This just isn't working for me. I'm not feeling the supposed chemistry between the characters; there's too much banter and not enough actual thoughts, feelings, or complexity. The author also keeps weirdly misusing words and it happens frequently enough to be distracting. Examples: "the insatiable burger," the "morbid" selection of tacky shirts at the airport gift shop, "his arms thwarted out at me." There are some other editing issues as well, such as Billy's outfit being described in multiple conflicting ways (a navy suit, a salmon polo with khakis, a navy polo) and it gives me the vibe that the author just published a first draft.
this was a fun read, although [and this is totally a me thing] i’m not sure how billy & mikey were getting so… comfortable without showering for days lmao.
i like how both billy & mikey stood up for themselves with their respective issues at hand however tony… deserved less grace imo but who’s keeping score?
i do wish we got an epilogue of their first official date or of billy meeting mikey’s family or soooooomething but i still enjoyed it.
I didn't like Billy. Then I really didn't like Billy. Then I kinda fell in love with Billy. Then I absolutely adored Billy. Michael was pretty perfect for me from beginning to end. Then there's a grand gesture and usually I hate grand gestures, but this was perfect and very much in the vein of a Richard Curtis film grand gesture and it was wonderful.
5⭐️ This book is another proof that you can write a romcom with an insane premise without it being shallow or boring. This is a wonderful example of wacky with lots of depth, wonderful character and relationship development as well as clever prose.
I really enjoyed this one. Was it very believable? No. Was it ridiculous? Yes. But was it also very good? Absolutely.
Billy is off to his sister’s wedding in Mexico, and everything to going somewhat smoothly. That is until he leaves his phone in the Uber, completely throwing his schedule out the window.
Michael is just trying to get to Ohio for a funeral he would rather not be attending. So why is this annoying Texan in a suit asking him to cut in front of him at security?
Things start going downhill for Billy from here. From a TSA mishap which further delays his boarding, to the mother of all hurricanes making a surprise appearance and resulting in all flights from JFK being cancelled.
Thrown together by their respective flight cancellations, Billy and Michael overcome their initial bad first impressions and team up to make the most of their days in airport limbo. From shopping sprees at tacky surf shops, to trying every restaurant they can find, and nights of uncomfortable sleep on horrible chairs, they bond over their airport traumas.
As they break down each others barriers, and start to get to know each other, a relationship blooms. Is it one that will survive outside of the airport bubble? And will they eventually escape their airport hell?
Oooooft @jeffreykdavenport has done it again with a book that is hard to put down! Both Billy and Michael are completely loveable characters who both have their flaws but do not let that stop them.
The side characters here as well stand out on their own, both Addison (who I would totally read a story about), and Halle who have smallish parts play their roles well.
There are some laugh out loud moments scattered throughout the book, the come to Jesus moment in particular, but also the rushing through the airport in a wet suit and flippers had me cackling.
Without spoiling anything, this book ended exactly as I thought and hoped it would, and it felt so right.
Meet Me In The Sky is definitely something to pick up if you’re after a cute, mildly spicy romance with some good laughs and a whole heap of cuteness
Loved the intro. Characterized Billy and Michael very well and their short antagonistic bout followed by the reconciliation gave them a nice basis to start off a camaraderie of sorts.
Billy and Michael's time together was sweet () but I also couldn't suspend my disbelief ahout them (well at least Michael) willingly staying in the airport for multiple days just to get first dibs on a flight? Like it didn't even pan out because when a flight did become available, Michael wasn't even given priority since he was on standby so like what was the point? Same for Billy.
Also, as sweet as Michael's arc about getting over his dead father was, I couldn't help but feel like it was overblown by three exceptionally unbelievable characters (primarily his dad, his half-sister, and Michael himself). His dad leaving yet still randomly offering an avenue for connection was weird given how littl3 he apparently thought of his old family. His half-sister desperately wanting Michael at his funeral was weird given host little they'd communicated apparently. Michael feeling conflicted felt contrived because his dad left when he was five. I get having formative memories, but that's just way too early to have such clear ones of his dad + deep feelings of conflict (as opposed to just pure hatred imo).
Everything that happens after Michael gets some closure is just too fluffy. There was nothing standing in either Billy or Michael's way of having a relationship. I can tell it was supposed to be Billy's reluctance but internal hangups need to be incredibly strong for it to carry a plot, and Billy having hangups over marriage because he was getting divorced was very much not enough especially when Billy himself said that he was feeling lonely (so why the hell would he not try for a relationship with Michael, aka the dude he enjoyed spending an incredibly stressful time with).
Then Billy commits the cardinal sin of leaving without actually doing it to Michael's face because feelings. God, idk why stories pull that BS because it rarely ever makes me sympathetic to the MC who left. It cheapens the romance knowing that Billy was capable of doing something so horrible to a guy who he supposedly respected and wanted to be around for something as weak as his ex getting into his head. We needed more than just one extended flashback from when Billy left his ex to justify him resolving to something as drastic as "I don't want to subject someone to the pain I felt" because that was literally the first time we'd seen that from him and to suddenly have that be his motivation was melodramatic.
I had to DNF when the cliché "Michael comes looking for Billy while Billy realizes his mistake" happened. The motivation for the conflict was just too unsatisfying for me to continue.
TL;DR: Had a great start that started to lose me with my inability to suspend my disbelief for what I thought were problems that could've been avoided altogether. I couldn't believe that Michael was so hung up on a dad that left him when he was five and that his stepsister was really that clueless/tactless. I couldn't believe that both Billy and Michael stayed in the airport to be on standby only for Michael to still not make it. I couldn't stand Billy just leaving Michael without saying goodbye because his trauma regarding his divorce suddenly manifested without being developed enough prior. I'd rate this a 2.5, but rounded down.
This was a new author to me and I was not sure I would like the story but I ended up liking it very much. It was not a meet cute story since Billy was acting like a nut when he realized that he had left his phone in the cab that had his boarding pass info on it. He annoyed Michael when he was asking if he could go ahead of him in line and then the mixup with their bags and being detained by the police. And the storm that stranded them in the airport for days was actually a good thing since they started to talk and learn about each other. Michael had been going to Dayton, Ohio for his father's funeral and he was dreading it since his father had abandoned his first family when he was only 5 years old and had barely been in touch over the years. He had agreed to it only because of his half-sister and was struggling to write a speech. Billy was heading to Mexico for his sister's wedding for which he was to be the Best Man and she was anxious and he was nervous wreck that he was not there early. It was so enjoyable to read about their growing attraction to each other and then Billy, who was separated from his husband and had filed for divorce, freaked out and left Michael in the middle of the night and went to Mexico because he was scared that history would repeat itself. I liked his father's speech at Halle's wedding about love and his mother was good about making him see that he had made a mistake by leaving so I was thrilled when Michael went to Mexico and made it to the wedding. This was so fun and I was very entertained.
This is such a cute story! Billy’s on the way to his sister’s wedding where he is the Man of Honor and determined that everything will go perfectly. He gets off to a rocky start when his soon to be ex-husband texts him and he forgets his phone in the uber. This cause some mild panic about not making in through security on time. Michael is on his way to his dad’s funeral, where he’s been asked to speak. The problem is he doesn’t have a relationship with his dad. He left them when Michael was five and they’ve barely spoken or seen each other since. But his half sister asked him to and he didn’t know what else to say. In Billy’s panic he asks for Michael’s help and the two end up in a disagreement. Thankfully they’ll never have to see each other again. Only they have the exact same bag and when Michael accidentally takes the wrong one they’re forced to interact again. Things get worse when a storm first delays their flights then cancels them. Now they are forced to hang out at the airport if they want to get on the next available flight. Over the next few days the two get to know each other better and find that they not only get along but are wildly attracted to each other. But as feelings grow will Billy let his past with his ex impact his connection to Michael? Will Michael’s anger and frustration at his family keep him from really connecting with Billy? Jeffrey K Davenport’s Meet Me in the Sky is sweet, spicy, charming, funny, and incredibly romantic. A bit of forced proximity mixed with dislike at first sight, and some insta love as well!
I absolutely loved this book and I don't know why more people isn't reading it. Jeffrey is a new to me author but I was hooked by the premise of two guys being stuck in the airport during a storm and having a force proximity of sorts while slowly getting to know and care for each other. I absolutely loved both MCs and there is a strong character development for both of them. We have Billy, a texas transplant who now lives in NY, divorcee (still processing it) and writer who is a little of a bubbly mess and is flying to Mexico for his sister's wedding. We then have Mickey, who is traveling to Ohio for his father's funeral but he had a very distant relationship with him and so many conflicting feelings about it. Their meet cute is a little of a disaster and it goes from bad to worse when they have a run in with TSA! And then.. their flights are cancelled and that is when the magic starts and when they slowly start getting to know each other and lowering their walls. This book had me smiling, laughing and underlying so much! I highly recommend this book if you are looking for a tender rom-com that develops in the course of a few days while Billy and Mickey are stuck in the airport
My brain can’t even attempt to properly review this beauty so here’s a little list of reasons why you should read it:
1. Instead of a meet cute, we get a meet disaster in airport that involves a little field trip to airport security
2. It’s hurt/comfort. Billy is still healing from his semi-recent divorce while Michael is on the way to his estranged father’s funeral. They’re total opposites but seem to know just the right ways to help each other.
3. Dirty airport schmex in the chapel (this healed my religious trauma)
4. Honestly, the author has this beautiful way of crafting words that blends humor, romance, and more emotional scenes into this absolute masterpiece of a story. I laughed, I cried, I’m not over it.
This was a super cute, cozy read. I laughed more times than I could count, mostly because Billy reminded me so much of myself (overly controlling, silly, slightly neurotic). The story that develops between him and Michael is really sweet and I enjoyed seeing all of the tender, quiet moments between them.
Couple of typos but nothing serious that took me out of the book. I’d describe the writing as highly metaphorical so if you don’t vibe with that, maybe skip this. I enjoyed the descriptions even when it verged on a bit cheesy :)
Stuck in the airport wonderfulness! Michael and Billy have what we like to call a meet ugly and it goes from there. I love how these two very quickly connect and bond in so many beautiful ways. The concept of them being stuck in the airport was also very well done and lent itself to some fun hijinks. You can truly see the groundwork laid for a strong relationship that's going to withstand the test of time with these two.
This book is the best surprise! I absolutely LOVED Billy & Michael. Their story got me all up in my feels & connected with me on a level I wasn't expecting. This author was new to me and I love his writing style, his voice, his sense of humor and his honesty. This book needs to be on my shelf & will definitely be one of my comfort rereads.
Another fun, hilarious, beautiful, queer romance from Jeffrey Davenport! He has a way of making his characters so relatable and really making you feel like part of their story. I want more people to read his work!!
OMG this rom-com bags mixed up flights delayed due to weather airport meet cute was adorable! I loved both of these guys. I was definitely rooting for them the whole time. The story was wonderful and you can definitely see this all happening in a movie!
Davenport writes love so well. I found myself rooting for Michael and Billy from the very beginning. I admit it; I cried more than once reading this novel. Davenport has gained a new fan in me.
