Discover the earliest days of the original Mighty Morphin Power Rangers – Jason, Kimberly, Zack, Trini, and Billy – right after they became Teenagers With Attitude. Juggling high school, extracurriculars, and budding romance, your favorite teen heroes might have it all under control… if it wasn’t for the dastardly Rita Repulsa, her minions, and their plan to defeat the Power Rangers once and for all. And if that wasn’t hard enough, the original Rangers also have to deal with keeping their new lives secret from a sixth member of their pre-Morphin Grid circle. Their friend Matthew Cook wasn’t chosen by Zordon, but will our team be able to keep their new identities from him even when their distant, dark future collides with their new beginning? By popular demand, the first half of the seminal Go Go Power Rangers series by superstar writers Ryan Parrott (Mighty Morphin Power Rangers/Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles) and Marguerite Bennett (Batwoman, Animosity) with fan favorite artists Dan Mora (Once & Future), Eleanora Carlini (The Amazing Spider-Man), Ilaria Catalini, Jordan Gibson, Derek Charm, Xiao Tong Kong, Jon Lam, and Jim Towe is collected for the first time in a deluxe hardcover format. Collects Go Go Power Rangers #1-16 and Go Go Power Back To School #1.
Love Dan Moras art, the story in this book adds some interesting new elements to this version of the power rangers but its also VERY teen drama heavy and I skipped over a few sections that really dragged that out.
This was so much fun! I still am not a fan of the shows, maybe because I didn't watch them as a kid, and now they feel a little too cheesy to me but without a whiff of nostalgia.
Regardless, the comics really hit the right spot for me: a little cheesy at times, but holding with the show, and not enough to make me cringe. I never really got the Power Rangers appeal - but the comics make me understand why the shows were so popular, are so popular, even if I never got into them and don't plan on it.
Regardless, I'm happy these comics exist: superhero fun, teenage drama, and just a fun, clean feel to it all - so far at least.
Inicia el arco: Early Life.
Finaliza el arco: Early Life.
Go Go Power Rangers is a prequel to Boom Studios' Mighty Morphin Power Rangers comics, taking place during and before the day of the Rangers' arrival. It explores the aftermath of the Rangers' initial battle with Rita Repulsa and introduces the Power Rangers in a unique way, using flashbacks to show the Rangers' lives before becoming Power Rangers and how they formed their close friendships.
I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed these comics, which offer a nuanced exploration of each Ranger's personality and the team's dynamic, revealing that even superheroes face personal struggles and aren't perfect teenagers with attitude, making for a compelling high school drama with a superhero twist.
I enjoyed several aspects of this series, including the aftermath of the astronauts who inadvertently freed Rita from her prison…talk about an “OOPSIE”, the introduction of Matt, Kimberly's boyfriend (BT- Before Tommy) and the team's friend, and the Ranger Slayer, the Kimberly from another universe, which sets the stage for the SHATTERED GRID arc.
'Go Go Power Rangers' is like the ultimate Power Rangers arc that fans would love! It has first loves, deep characters, and romance - yes, Jason and Trini are a thing - plus Power Rangers switching colors, because who wouldn't want to see Zack in pink, and fascinating backstories.
I was a 90s kid. I lived and breathed Power Rangers from Mighty Morphin in elementary, through Power Rangers in Space in middle school. It was a big influence on me growing up. To say I picked these up because of nostalgia is probably an understatement, and I'll preface this by saying I'm clearly viewing this through rose tented lenses. However, I can say that if you ever enjoyed power rangers, you will enjoy these comics.
The art style is very recent, clean, sharp, and the battles are great. The story is an updated take on the classic MMPR with Rita and Goldar leading the way. By updated I mean there are cellphones present where the original was set in an era before those became so prevalent. It also has more of a focus on character growth and interaction rather than being a monster of the day type of thing. The story flows a lot better here on the pages than in the classic tv. You even get more inline with the character's traumas (such as Kim's struggle with parents divorcing, though that may be the second issue? I can't quite remember!).
All in all, these comics are great. If you're even slightly interested, I would definitely say take a shot. Again, I am but one person and this review reflects my own views. You may love them or hate them, but that is true for all things! Be your own judge, and finally, may the power protect you.
I acquired loads of Power Ranger comics in the Humble Bundle and read the collections in a list forming the Shattered Grid storyline. However this one isn't in the list but it's definitely the one you should read first. I did recognise some comics, so some of these overlap in time or used as flashbacks in the other collections. However the extra backstory to the characters, like their strong friendship with Matt (and Kim's romance with him), and their relationship with Bulk and Skull makes their characters in other books make more sense. This does jump around in time, although shortly before and after "Arrival day" when monsters first attack Angel Grove. You see the Power Rangers attempt to discover the limits to their powers, the strain on Kim and Matt's relationship as she has to keep it a secret. Kim's parents are arguing, Jason's Dad is ill, Trini has a crush on Jason. You learn Billy was childhood friends with Skull, but now Bulk and Skull are bullies. Billy considers quitting for a job at Promethea. The Rangers meet Rita for the first time. Then the Ranger Slayer comes back in time and betrays Drakkon although he's just a mysterious character if you read this first. It's generally a straight-forward story to understand apart from that.
Captures the tone of the original series perfectly, but modernizes it in interesting ways, moves the characters in directions that are unexpected, and has consistently strong "teen drama" writing. It all feels both extremely fun and extremely real for its characters.
Looks gorgeous too. So many panels are just visually stunning. Couldn't put it down.
Oh man... alot really happened in these 16 issues of the main story in the Deluxe.
The first chapter was the begining, The famous Arrival Day where Power Rangers fought against Goldar, a loyal servant of Rita Repulsa. ( it was a great joy to go back to timed where Rita Repulsa is the main villain) Power Rangers defeated Goldar and he ran away back to Rita. The Begining of everything, the first encounter with Rita Repulsa's tokusatsu monters. It was named the Arrival Day, from here on the Arrival Day was the Zero Hour, the story that was told came and went between before the Arrival Day (Angel Grove City before Power Rangers, The Zero Hour.) after the Arrival Day (Angel Grove City after Power Rangers, the Zero Hour.)
It was really alot of fun to go back to the begining of Power Rangers with a better plot and story telling for a more mature audiance. Our Teen Age heroes juggled between their personal lives, school life and Super Hero life. Tryed to find a balance. Alot of character drama came with the personal lives of Power Rangers and that mixed with alot of Super Hero, Mecha Action and all these made a really good reading. I really had good time. Oh man... Did i miss Rita Repulsa. (: What a fine villain.
The main story end with the disclosure of creation of the Green Ranger. Rita achieved the Necessary Power Coin to create the Green Ranger. There was some time travel in the main story by the way, Ranger Slayer Kimberly and Lord Drakkon were already involved in the Power Rangers main story from the begining. It looks like Tommy as The Lord Drakkon made a very compelling villain.
First 12 issues were drawn by Dan Mora. He really has an amazing art. ( i can't wait to see his art on the Newly announced DC series such as Captain Marvel (Shazam) and Superman & Batman World's Finest books) the rest of 4 issues' artists did a fine job as well. There were two Bonus issues but they didn't have anything to do with main story. They were just bonus material, fill in stuff, but first one of the fill in stories had some heart, showed how Power Rangers helped people and animals around them in their spring break week as socialy concious human beings. It was great to come back to the Original Power Rangers as an adult. It felt really good to read about Jason, Zack, Billy, Kimberly, Trini and Tommy... And Alpha and Zordon. The Original Crew. (:
