Retelling di Persuasione versione Heartfield, Oregon. Anne è un medico specializzato in pediatria, in particolare in tumori infantili. Otto anni fa, appena uscita dal college, quando doveva cominciare a studiare per la specializzazione, Anne Elliot incontra per caso un ragazzo molto cool, un vigile del fuoco di quelli dei corpi speciali, che viaggiano con gli elicotteri sorvolando sugli incendi e lanciandosi per risolvere la situazione. I due hanno una relazione intensa per due mesi, ma poi Anne è combattuta perché teme che la loro relazione possa deteriorarsi a causa della possibilità di condividere poco tempo insieme. Così, su consiglio della sua tutor, la dottoressa Russell, Anne lascia Patrick Wentworth, rimpiangendo ogni giorno quel che hanno perso.

This is so familiar - I must have read it in an anthology. This is Persuasion retold, some of the characters recast, alternating between present day and recollections of their past all from Anne's POV. It resolves quickly at the end (given that it is less than 50 pages it must - but it still stays true to the spirit of canon).

I really like the modern update for Persuasion. Anne's logic made quite a lot of sense, even if she had cause to regret it. I wish the ending had been longer, though.
