A friendly opossum finds adventure in a family s backyard A baby opossum falls off her mother s back and finds herself in a strange new world a suburban backyard. As the Green family and the opossum become acquainted with each other, the adventurous creature learns to sneak food from the dog bowl, avoid capture by an owl, and make friends with other wildlife along the way. From the team who created the popular urban wildlife guide The Raccoon Next Door comes a story introducing one of California s most adorable and intriguing critters.
Gary Bogue writes newspaper articles about the local wildlife in the Bay Area, and I started looking for his books after I had read a few of his columns. Since the Opossum is one of the most misunderstood animals, it was nice to see that Bogue had devoted an entire book for children and their families to learn more about America's native marsupial.
The book keeps it simple and shows what a poor Opossum must go through on a daily basis. I used to live next door to a woman who brought up orphaned Opossums, and they were quite a trip, as she taught them to walk on leashes. I wouldn't suggest this for any orphans you might find, but I was delighted to find this book might help some humans change their attitude toward a creature that dates back to the days of the dinosaur. Me, I enjoy having the critters around, as they eliminate any snails and slugs I have without my having to resort to pesticides. It's rather like a labor contract, really.
A nation can define itself based on its treatment of its animals, so bravo for any book that helps in this effort. If you read this and still want to learn more about our backyard brethren, try joining the National Opossum Society for more information.
This is a Cute story about a baby opossum getting lost and coming across a human backyard. and there are also nice pictures. I like this book a lot, and am lucky enough to have an autographed copy. Great book.
