Once I got into this I knew why. A very unimpressive main character with one interesting trait that is ignored for the first three fourths of the book. And a ridiculous end with nothing to support it.
Ends too open ended. Sure the reader can infer a lot of stuff that could happen next, but basically we received a series about the rise of a last summoner and sure that promise was delivered. The last summoner did rise.
He rose from his position at the mines, from his low state in the lower city, from his lack of education, etc. But ultimately what did we get?
A lot of world building and lead up to get the MC into the academy and then more world building, lots of questions left unanswered, and lots of characters who did nothing and served no purpose except to populate the world and make it feel lived in.
If there is a book 2 by the time anyone reads this, it’s possible the points may be inaccurate. As it is, we have two books of world building, a promise kept, no overarching plot or bad guy to defeat. And the only growth that occurred in the book was the growth of skills and the relationship between Ellian and Flame….
2 stars out of 5 -1 star for being another school/academy based book -1 star for lacking an overarching plot -1 for writing a lot and having a lot of action going on that ultimately went nowhere and did nothing.
TLDR: sadly, this book could cease to exist in the world and nothing of value would be lost. Don’t hate the author, but the bad pacing and lack of change in the book.

Grab the book to see if Elian can hold onto his secrets!
I knew that this was gonna be a fun series the moment I laid eyes on it... it's by Todd Herzman, and about a Summoner, btw I love the MC! But the second book is even better. I hit the jackpot as I just love academy books. Elian gets back to the lower city and now has the protection from demons. Fulfilling his childhood dream of being a Marked one and entering the academy, skating around the rules hiding his Full-Marked status... because being a Summoner is actually illegal in the Valley of Auld the last human stronghold... and what’s a little blackmail between uh friends huh? So yeah grab the book to see if Elian can keep up the facade!
I admit that I only started the series to kill time, but I've enjoyed the series so far. If I understand everything correctly, this author wrote another series I read. While I didn't enjoy the ending of that series, I did love the ride it took me on. I believe that series was Todd's first adventure in publishing his stories. I've noticed a clear improvement overall from the previous series. Not that it was bad whatsoever but that it wrapped things up in too neat a bow. Then again, I wasn't happy with certain characters perishing in the other series.
It’s a good read. The author has great material, but the main character is still written as a bit of an idiot. I’m sure heroes can be stupid too, but it’s frustrating for the readers when they are that way. Well, I guess he’s got no way but up from here.
I like this story for how real it feels in the human dynamics. The character development is excellent, surprising and strong. I can’t wait to see how this will ultimately play out.
This is where the series really shines. Attend an academy and hide something from all the students and teachers. And of course, level up. A very good second book for the series.
