The Story About Me

Everyone loves to hear stories about their family, and Grandma can tell the best ones. Today she tells my story--about how she found out she was going to be a grandma and how everyone in the family was so excited to meet me. On my Grandma's birthday, before I was born, my mama gave my Grandma a cup that said, "Grandma" on it. That's how she found out my mama was going to have a baby. But I didn't come right away--everyone had to wait, and wait, and wait. My great-aunt Sally knitted me a small sweater, leggings, and a hat. My big cousin Kristen from Idaho was eager to take me hiking. Back home, my parents, Grandma, and Uncle John got the house ready for me. And once I finally did arrive, everybody else showed up, too. They came by plane, train, car, and bus--all to see me!

About the author

Miriam Schlein was an American author who wrote nearly 100 books that helped teach children about animals and more obscure ideas such as space and time. Her books include The Year of the Panda and Discovering Dinosaur Babies. Schlein died of vasculitis in Manhattan, New York, at age 78, in 2004.

This book is about a grandmother that always tell stories to her granddaughter about all the members of the family and one day the story was about the granddaughter and how all the family was excited when they realized her mom was pregnant and how they got ready to receive her.

The major them of the book is love In the family.

I loved this book because I feel identify on how close my family is. I recommend this book because it creates awareness of the importance of love in the family.

The book “The Story About Me” is about a little girl who loves to go over to her grandma’s house so she can tell her stories. One day she went over and asked if grandma had a story for her that day. Of course she said yes. Grandma starts the story off by showing her all these pictures of people who she has no idea who they are. She asks grandma who the people were and what the story is about. Grandma replies that the story is about her! Grandma starts talking about how she got a present from her daughter of a cup that says grandma and that’s when she knew she was going to be a grandma. Everyone in the family was notified that the mom was having a baby, which was the main character/little girl in the book asking for stories. They waited and waited for her to arrive. Everyone showed up on the day she was born. The little girl asked her grandma why did you love me so much, she replied with “that’s just the way it is with families.”

The overall theme of this book is family and love. The little girl loved to hear stories from her grandma and this story was about her and how much her family already loved her even before she was born. Her grandma told her all about how her family was getting ready for her arrival, knitting clothes, writing songs, and buying gifts. The little girl learned all about her family that day and learned that her family loves her dearly.

I really enjoyed this book because I remember my grandma telling me stories from my childhood and the moment she found out she was going to be a grandma she was so excited. Every time I go over to my grandmas house she loves to tell me stories about me so this book was very relatable and heartwarming.

I would definitely recommend this book because I’m sure one time or another kids have asked their grandparents to tell them stories and they have told them all about their childhood and the time they were born and how excited they were when they realized they were going to be grandparents. It’s also really important for kids to read these kinds of books because it teaches them about love and family and that they are always there for you and excited to see you.
