Excellent for reluctant readers and all kids hungry for funny school stories, Dan Gutman’s hugely popular My Weird School chapter book series has something for everyone. Don’t miss the hilarious adventures of A.J. and his friends!
The author of over 80 books in a little over a decade of writing, Dan Gutman has written on topics from computers to baseball. Beginning his freelance career as a nonfiction author dealing mostly with sports for adults and young readers, Gutman has concentrated on juvenile fiction since 1995. His most popular titles include the time-travel sports book Honus and Me and its sequels, and a clutch of baseball books, including The Green Monster from Left Field. From hopeful and very youthful presidential candidates to stunt men, nothing is off limits in Gutman's fertile imagination. As he noted on his author Web site, since writing his first novel, They Came from Centerfield, in 1994, he has been hooked on fiction. "It was fun to write, kids loved it, and I discovered how incredibly rewarding it is to take a blank page and turn it into a WORLD."
Gutman was born in New York City in 1955, but moved to Newark, New Jersey the following year and spent his youth there.
Entire book read aloud with my 7 year old. He gives it a 4.99 /5 😜
This series is so silly, but as a mom and (former) reading teacher what I love is how it uses that silliness to teach literary devices, encourage reading comprehension, and most of all speak to the elementary school experience.
The audio book, My Weirdtastic School #7 Mr. and Mrs. Phelps Need Some Help, by Dan Gutman is a marvelous children's book. It is inclusive and is full of honophones. It's perfect for 3-4 grade grammar/phonics lessons. Book diversity is carried out throughout. When the class students are presented with the opportunity to cook, sew, or learn woodworking, they are hesitant. Two teachers, husband and wife, decide to teach two classes. One class is a typical home economics and the other is a shop class. The children were very surprised to find Mr. Phelps will be teaching home economics while Mrs. Phelps runs the shop. They break stereotype by representing the opposite career choice. The kids found their new life skill classes very enjoyable. During the story the Phelps' show mutual love and understanding. They also enjoy playing tricks on each other.. Their most recent shenanigans, gone awry, forced them into a riff. The teachers work as a team, with a little help from there students, returning them back in "love" by books end.
