Jamaal The IT Guy

Rate this book
Some workplace crushes make you want to clock in on your day off.

Winnie Chambers finds herself three months deep into a job she despises at a company she adores. Enduring a boss who oscillates between passive aggressive and outright rude, she feels more like a glorified errand runner than the executive assistant she was hired to be. Her only solace lies in her interactions with the fine IT guy, who she relies on to help with her perpetually malfunctioning laptop.

Jamaal Singleton’s workdays follow a staff meeting at ten, lunch with his work bestie, Risha at noon, and afternoons spent in his cubicle finishing up projects. But since Winnie Chambers arrived, Jamaal’s predictable work routine has been turned on its head. He now spends his days hoping she encounters an IT issue that requires his assistance, strategically wandering the office for a chance to catch a glimpse of her. He fantasizes about her smiling in his direction or confessing her feelings for him on a random Tuesday. At night, Jamaal finds himself drafting list of pros and cons about asking Winnie out on a date and the likelihood of success.

Both Winnie and Jamaal arrive at work each day with the same thought in mind … a chance encounter in the elevators that leads to locked eyes and a passionate make-out session between the second and eighth floors. While they navigate their careers, they also must grapple with how to win over the other’s heart.

Winnie x Jamaal

This was sooo cute. Just pure cutesy love between two nerds essentially. These nerds were definitely hot and getting it in every chance they got 🌶🌶.

Omg, this novella was adorable! I love mutual pining, and Jamaal and Winnie had it in spades!

Winnie is an executive assistant to the head of a tech company, but has had her eyes set on Jamaal from IT since she started. Winnie comes up with any ole excuse to make her way to the IT basement, not realizing that Jamaal has been crushing on her just as hard. My favorite part of this book was seeing how gone they were for each other when we were in each character's thoughts. It was hilarious and adorable, and I couldn't stop cheesing.

Once they realize the feeling is truly mutual, it doesn't take long for them to start exploring their connection. I've never seen two people happier and relieved that they finally got the crush of their dreams! Make no mistake, Jamaal's nerdiness and Winnie's quirkiness did NOT get in the way of their insane chemistry. They ate each other up (literally), and I was here for it.

I did enjoy the twists and depth the author was able to add to their story. Yes it was all about the romance, but we were able to learn about Jamaal and Winnie as individuals. This helped us see why they were the way they were, and just made their happiness that much more rewarding!

Really cute story.

I adored this couple. The story was mostly drama free with a lot of work stuff to the storyline. The IT guy was super sweet and he met the person to match his energy perfectly.

This was such a feel good story. Winnie and Jamaal’s mutual attraction to each other was adorable. I was so excited for both of them to go after what they wanted in each other. Jamaal was such a sexy blerd. I understood why Winnie fell so hard for him. Their courtship was romantic and fun. There was very little angst in their union. I loved that. They had enough workplace drama to keep the story interesting. I loved how both of them overcame their problems on the job. This was the perfect lighthearted read for my birthday vacation!

Very cute! Jamaal is a doll and he got to be in the title, but Winnie is adorable. She speaks her mind, is assertive and sweet. I want to send an application to be her friend.

ARC Review! Thank you so much Kasha Thompson.

Now this was a cute and corky read. Something light that left me with a smile. My only thing is I’m always on the fence when popular culture things/people are mentioned. Some of it was okay but outside of that i still enjoyed the story.

Winnie and Jamal were absolutely adorable. They both were smitten with each other from jump. Making excuses to see the other while at work was so cute. Honey once they got going though it was “wham Bam thank you ma’am.” They got things moving. Sometimes love is like that and you don’t mind jumping off the deep end. The spice was giving and Jamal may be a “nerd” but y’all better call him Mr. Freak.

There is family and work place drama. Glad they both found their voices and eventually stepped into what they truly wanted to do. I loved learning about Winnie’s family and how she grew up. Never came across that pov since I’ve been reading. For Jamal that was some really messed up ish. Everyone should know by now just because they are family doesn’t mean you have to put up with them. Y'all can be cordial and not buddy buddy. If someone does you wrong you don’t owe them your space.

If you like work place romance, black love that is healthy, growth, family and some drama be sure to read come June 18th.

This book was so freakin' adorable. Jamaal and Winnie work for the same tech firm but in completely different departments. And unbeknownst to the other, they've been secretly crushing on each other for months. Plot wise, there's not much else besides the two of them flirting and bantering and boning and falling in love but I will say, his cousin stealing his idea and turning it into a billion dollar company made me really dislike the cousin. And in fact, when Jamaal tells Miles to sign over half the company to him and Miles acts like that's the craziest idea ever, I really did want Jamaal to punch him again. That was the one part that annoyed me - this wasn't a small wrong, he literally stole his idea and all his work and became a billionaire off that and expects Jamaal to keep providing him with ideas. But the actual romance between Jamaal and Winnie was chef's kiss perfection.

Jamaaaaaaal!!!!🥰😍🥰😍🥰

I really enjoyed this story from start to finish.
Jamaal and Winner were something special. Their sweetness was so pure. The trajectory of their relationship was believable and heartfelt.
I did not not enjoy Miles at all. I honestly expected a MUCH different outcome to his heinous act. His actions were unforgiveable to me. But then the story wouldn't have been such a sweet romcom.
Overall, this was a very good story with likeable characters.

Good chemistry

The characters had good chemistry and I liked their personalities. I would've liked to meet Winnie's family. I had to knock off two stars for the molestation joke because that topic isn't a joke and perpetuating toxic Black families. I would be no more than cordial with Miles. It wouldn't have been a joke to give him half of the company if not more because what he did was unforgivable. Having him try to have a relationship with him after everything was insane. Probably won't re-read because of that.

Recommended reading one time.

This book was very refreshing; I had no expectations expect to enjoy a really workplace romance, cuz it’s Kasha Thompson, so the book WILL be good, but I really appreciated the uniqueness of this story. I was like, ‘oh, I wasn’t expecting that, and go on!’ It’s the kind of book where you’re reading and don’t realize you’re at the end until that ‘about the author’ page pops up and then you like, can I have a lil more?? 😩

Winnie and Jamaal were mature and likeable main characters that I wanted to see have the best by the end of the story. I did have a moment with Winnie where I was like, girl 😒, but truthfully, I woulda did the same if I was in her shoes 😂😂

And as usual, Kasha writes really fun and interesting side characters. I really hope there’s another story in there somewhere!!!! 🤞🏾👀

Anyways, I enjoyed this story so much and I been in a slump but I finished this in like a day cuz it was that good, so now I’m freeeee!!!

Oh, and I know y’all be wondering about the spice and all I got to say is that the nerds be the biggest freaks 🤓🤪🤭

Great couple and an inspirational love story

Winnie and Jamaal have mutal crushes on each other and they are both hesitant to make the first move. After months of flirting they finally connect and the sparks fly. This story follows them as they build their relationship and support each other through the ups and downs of family and work issues and the insecurities that prevent them from taking the next big step.
There is also a nice amount of spice included.
I did not want to put this down. I'd love a follow up on the lives of Simone and Miles.

This quick read gave me all the feels. Workplace crushes and flirting that blossomed into love. There was some drama and lots of spice. Winnie’s confidence and wittiness complimented Jamaal’s nerdiness and smarts. Great writer. Engaging story and relatable characters. Loved it! Maybe there should be a sequel with Miles. I want to know more about him.

Nerd romance is a new obsession unlocked! I am living for the laughs, the awkwardness, the nervous rambling. Jamaal and Winnie gave you the best parts of your favorite rom-com, with a serving of undercover freak and side of family drama. Their story was a super cute Saturday morning read!

This was such a feel good story! I was giggling and kicking my feet the whole time I was reading.

Jamaal and Winnie’s banter was so cute and realistic that I found myself smiling the whole time I was reading! I loved how they both genuinely had crushes on each other and how they came into their relationship!

I’ve held off on reviewing this book for quite some time, mainly because I was left feeling disappointed and upset. “Jamaal the IT Guy” started off strong for me, introducing refreshing characters who quickly became a couple I absolutely adored. Their chemistry was undeniable; they communicated well and mutually pined for each other. How could you possibly resist that? It seemed like a recipe for an enjoyable read. Unfortunately, the story took a turn that I couldn’t ignore. First, just because you’re from the Caribbean that doesn’t automatically make you smell like curry, so I was puzzled by the author’s decision to include this stereotype. This highlights the importance of having sensitivity readers—one could have easily pointed this out. Second, using the term “m*l*st” to describe two consenting adults engaging in affectionate behavior is cringe. The word grope is right there! Lastly, the storyline inadvertently promotes toxic family values. There’s no way Miles could have been part of my life without consequences—everyone would know! The constant “it’s family; we’re all we have” feels toxic to me. Give that man half of the company (he deserves it), beat his ass(I’m just saying-he was foul) and cut ties. The fact that this dynamic was brushed aside didn’t sit well with me. I would have preferred to see more of Winnie’s family on the page instead of the problematic elements that overshadowed the narrative for me. Overall, this story had the potential to be a solid read, but too many cringe-worthy moments pulled me out of the experience. I’m a fan of the author’s work, but this particular book just didn’t resonate with me.

With Jamaal The IT Guy, I have officially read all of Kasha Thompson's published work and what can I say besides...I'm a huge fan! Thompson writes these really good stories featuring Black men and women in such a unique way. Her characters are lovable, the stories are engaging and hard to put down. That's why I finished Jamaal The IT Guy in less than 2 days.

In Jamaal The IT Guy, we meet Winnie and Jamaal. Winnie is a creative extrovert who comes from a family of tumblers and contortionists. Winnie is in California, looking to establish roots for herself after separating from her family's way of life - looking for something more stable, something that doesn't require travel, living out of an RV, and performing. She's climbing her way to the top at Codeability, the startup everyone's talking about, looking to pursue her passions in communications and marketing, but until then she spends her days as a gofer/assistant to the assistant of the guy who runs the Codeability and pining after Jamaal - the IT guy. Jamaal is smart, funny, and fine as hell! He's grappling with confidence issues, he's risk adverse, and he wants Winnie just as bad as she wants him.

When the two finally get on the same page, the sparks fly and readers get to experience a beautiful, relaxing love story about two diverse characters navigating love of self and setting boundaries; intimacy and vulnerability in relationships; family issues; and achieving goals.

One of my favorite romantic quotes comes from Jamaal The IT Guy, below where Jamaal expounds upon his love for Winnie:

Happiness hides in your smile. In the way you look at me. In our heated debates...in the freckles that dot your nose. In the feel ofyour hand in mine...Happiness is the text messages laced with emojis and GIFs that perfectly encapsulate our conversations. It's the way you say my name after we kiss...it's softer, richer, and filled with so much meaning. You are happiness. Being with you and the life we're creating is my happiness.

I felt so satisfied after reading Jamaal The IT Guy, but I'd be lying if I said that I didn't want more. There is so much more that I want to know about Winnie and Jamaal's story, for now I will accept the "happy for now" ending. Thank you to Kasha Thompson for the Advanced Reader Copy (ARC).

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ ARC Review- Jamaal The IT Guy - Kasha Thompson

Pub Date- June 18th 2024

Thank you so much @kashathompson for sending me this ARC to read and review! When I saw the cover I knew this was something I wanted to read. And I’m so happy I did.

In Jamaal The IT Guy, we’re introduced to Winnie Chambers, a new comer to Codeability, who’s trying to just get her foot in the door and work her way up the ladder. Winnie has crossed paths with Jamaal, an IT tech who she thinks is adorable and might just have a crush on. When Winnie asks Jamaal for some help with her boss’s laptop, they finally get to know each other outside of the help desk.

This was the cutest book I’ve read in a long time! Yes yes I know it’s a novelette but the story Kasha got into these 179 pages could have easily been a full length book. I was so impressed with this love story. I love when things are just easy and organic. No struggle, no miscommunication, and no running away. Winnie and Jamaal were both my favorite parts of this story. The way they both were quintessentially nerds but had other sides that everyone didn’t get to see. Their family backgrounds were complete opposites but they meshed so well together. They each had some issues but they encouraged each other to conquer them head on. I felt bad for Jamaal to have someone so close to hurt his feelings and betray his trust. But the way Winnie constantly hyped her man up! Loved that for him. These two were really just made for each other in every way.

Now Kasha. I’m not saying we need a part 2 but I would really love to hear more of Winnie’s and Jamaal’s story 😩 and I’m not giving out any spoilers but I would like to know what’s going on maybe a year later 🤔😂. This novelette makes a great weekend read and definitely worth it! Make sure yall get it when it comes out ✌🏾❤️

These two are so adorable! I had a smile on my face the entire time while reading this book. Winnie and Jamaal work for the same start up tech company, but in different departments. While Winnie works on the executive floor, Jamaal (as you may have guessed from the title) works in IT. The pair have mutual crushes and make excuses to see each other under the guise of tech help.
I really enjoyed their interactions and felt they were grounded in reality. Both had trepidations, which is understandable. We’ve all had that experience of having a crush on someone and not knowing whether feelings are reciprocated.

I loved that it was told in dual POVs because it was fun to see both sides of the crush coin. There were a lot of fun, witty lines that had me laughing.

“I’d always been a sucker for a man with glasses. Some women liked a nice ass or strong legs. I preferred my men, visually impaired.”

“Probably because my idea of flirting was asking questions like … “If civilization collapsed and you were one of a handful of survivors, what’s your special skill to help rebuild the world?””

““A woman doesn’t spend her time off making cupcakes with hand crafted details to be nice. She could have bought you a box of cupcakes from the grocery store. But no … she went out of her way to let you know you could get it on-site.””

The spicy scenes were on fire and Ms. Thompson does a great job stoking the flames until it finally culminates in the two MMCs getting together. Honestly, I couldn’t put this book down! One minor quibble - I never would’ve forgiven Miles. What he did was super crappy, and he never really dealt with any consequences. Aside from that, this was a great read!

Now excuse me while I go read everything in this author’s backlist.
