Overall a fun and easy-to-read anthology. All of the stories were good and well-written, with different themes. Some were lighter and funnier, while others were darker.
Most of the stories incorporated the mandatory goat element by featuring one of the main characters as a satyr, but not all of them did.
Some of the stories felt more complete, with a clear beginning, middle, and end, while others seemed like mere beginnings or teasers for longer works.
My favorite short story was "When the Satyr Comes Home" by Lizzie Strong.
I received an ARC of this book and I am voluntarily leaving a review. Receiving ARC didn’t affect my opinion of the book.
I absolutely adored this anthology. Each story was freaking wonderful! Some were super cute and fluffy, while others were a bit darker. They were all wonderfully well written and I would not be upset at all to continue reading any of them!
I received this anthology as an arc and am voluntarily leaving a review.
A fun anthology with a hilarious premise: goat. There's gotta be a goat somewhere. Now, most of the stories handle this by having one of the MCs be a satyr, which, no complaints here, but not all of them do. Overall I give the anthology 4/5 stars. Thoughts on the individual stories below.
When the Satyr Comes Home: 5/5 stars. My favorite in the whole book. A charming story that felt like it had a complete beginning/middle/end, and lots of humor to go with it. Definitely the lightest, tone-wise. Purity: 5/5 stars. This one had some interesting things to say about purity, virginity, and loneliness. I felt like some of the human MC's attributes were more informed than shown, but it didn't kick me out of the story too much. Bo Sleeps: 3/5 stars. Jesus rollerblading Christ. Aside from this story feeling like it was the beginning to something longer, it did not have a happy ending, or even a happy-for-now. 3 stars for being extremely well-written but it punched me in the fuckin' face. Fauning Over You: 4/5 stars. I liked this one a lot but it left me wanting more. I wish there had been another few scenes for them after the big climax for them to reconnect. Again this felt like it could have been the setup for something longer/expanded, and if that does indeed happen I'd be the first to read it. Hag & Horn: 4/5 stars. A sweet sapphic story that has some interesting things to say about grief and loving after loss. No spice in this one, which is fine, but much like Fauning Over You, I wish there had been another scene or two for the couple after the big climax. Falling action! I needs it. The Lost Boys: Pride: 2/5 stars. idk this one just wasn't my favorite. It wasn't clear who I was supposed to be 'rooting' for, and it ended on a cliffhanger (the author noted that it will be published as a longer piece, which I'll probably read). Just not satisfying for me. There was potential there, I just didn't feel like it had any kind of payoff. The God of Varrie Grove: 5/5 stars. Boy oh boy did I love this one. M/M pairing, hurt/comfort, Religious Stuff, and adorable nicknames. This one held up as a standalone, feeling like a completed narrative, but honestly I'd read 300 pages of this pair. Great stuff. Of Goats and Roses: 4/5 stars. Depression/suicide themes but ultimately very hopeful. My favorite part was how well-created the side characters were. I'd read a series of novellas set in this town. It's giving similar vibes to the Haven Ever After series.
This was a pretty good ARC read! I read this all in one day, taking a break after each story. And because this is an anthology, I figured I'd do mini reviews for each story instead of a general review!!
1. When the Satyr comes Home - Lizzie Strong - 3⭐ 3🌶️ - This was a good start for the anthology, very cute! Would love to see this as a full story!
2. Purity - Elaine Daniels - 2.5⭐ 3🌶️ - This read was not what I expected. It was an okay read about a unicorn but not up my alley! I skimmed the smut.
3. Bo Sleeps - Chalan Johnson - 2⭐ 2🌶️ - I found this short story was a little too dark for me.
4. Fauning Over You - Nikki Bradley - 3.5⭐ 3🌶️ - This one was really good! I'm really interested in Greek and Roman mythology so I thoroughly enjoyed this one <3
5. Hag & Horn - K. Archer - 2⭐ 1🌶️ - I'm not really a witchy person, so I didn't enjoy this one as much as I thought I would. However, the writing was well done and it made me feel quite sad for Kalyna.
6. The Lost Boys Pride - Raven Storm - 4⭐ 3.5🌶️ - I absolutely love the plot twist in this one. I was hooked from the start of this short story and I'm sad it ended on a cliffhanger. Definitely going to look into getting the full version when it comes out!!
7. The God of Varrie Grove - E. N. Laurier - 2⭐ 3🌶️ - I sadly skimmed through a lot of this because the main character shares the name of someone close to me, and I couldn't stop thinking that the person I know was the main character😅😂
8. Of Goats and Roses - A. F. Barnes - 4.5⭐ 3🌶️ - Out of the entire anthology, this short story was my favourite!! I got super invested in this and soaked in every word. I love the friendship and protectiveness in this story and how the goat in this one wanted, and did, protect everyone on the land. I truly wish this one was longer!! <3
Overall, all these stories were quite interesting! I loved some more than others, but each short story was written beautifully. I 100% recommend this to anyone who is looking for something interesting to read/likes goats!😂❤
I got this anthology an ARC. I loved that every story incorporated goats.
When the Satyr Comes Home:⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.25 I really liked this story. I also really liked the characters Delphini and Billie.
Purity:⭐️⭐️⭐️.5 This was a really weird story but I did like it. It did intrigued me tho. I did like that this story brought up purity, virginity, and loneliness.
Bo Sleeps:⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I absolutely loved this story. I really loved Bo. I also really loved Shadow. UGH THAT ENDING! I am so sad that it was not a happy ending.
Fauning Over You:⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.75 I really liked this story. DV is mentioned in this story so please take care of your mental health first. I really loved Pippa and Pan together.
Hag & Horn:⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.5 I really liked this story. The only thing I didn’t like was the mentioning of eating children and NO THIS DID NOT HAPPEN! I did like the characters Kalyna “Hags” and Buckthorns. I thought it was funny that Buckthorn almost made someone eat a toad.
The Lost Boys:Pride:⭐️⭐️⭐️ Um I honestly don’t know how to feel about this story. I just don’t know wtf I just read. This story has SA in it so please skip this story if you can’t handle it. I did like the chasing in the woods but the rest of story is just don’t know.
The God of Vairrie Grove:⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.5 I really liked Caleb and Kyrite. I really liked how they came together. I loved the nicknames for each other.
Of Goats and Roses:⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.75 I really loved this story. This was a great ending to the anthology!! My favorite part was how Ró handled her feelings about her ex boyfriend and ex best friend did to her.
This was so sad because I really enjoyed How to Marry a Lich by Lizzie Strong and I was excited to get an ARC of this anthology. But idk if this collection is gonna work for me. I might try and pick it up again in the future but it's just not working for me right now.
The Stories (...That I Read):
• When The Satyr Comes Home: 2.5/5 • Purity: DNF • Bo Sleeps: DNF
An unusual thematic premise for sure! “Doesn’t matter what it is as long as it has goats!” I enjoyed the variety of tropes in the collection of stories. The stories that resonated the most with me were PUTITY, BO SLEEPS, and OF GOATS AND ROSES. It’s so challenging to give a review for a book like this because your girl is a Horror Book Girlie™️ but if you’re into romantasy, livestock, and well, a spicy combination thereof, you might want to give it a go.
