* A stand-alone adventure set in the Amaranthe universe *

The Hesgyr are thieves. “Scavengers,” to hear their victims tell it; “repurposers” by their own reckoning.

As Chief of Intelligence for Non-Anaden Affairs, Eren Savitas’ job is to protect the Advocacy from all manner of alien sabotage, assassination, insurgency and, way down the list, theft. So when he spots a Hesgyr running off with valuable technology, he follows the alien home—and discovers a civilization unlike any he’s ever encountered.

Yes, the Hesgyr are thieves. But they are also being hunted. Systematically exterminated by an enemy they can’t see, touch or find. As Eren finds himself drawn ever deeper into the mystery of the attacks, he uncovers a complex web of loyalties and betrayals—and beneath it all, a secret that may hold the key to the survival of more than one civilization.

G. S. Jennsen is a speculative and science fiction author, as well as a futurist, geek, gamer, programmer and editor. She has become an internationally bestselling author since her first novel, Starshine, was published in March 2014. She has chosen to continue writing under an independent publishing model to ensure the integrity of her series and her ability to execute on the vision she’s had for it since its genesis.

While she has been a lawyer, a software engineer and an editor, she’s found the life of a full-time author preferable by several orders of magnitude.

When she isn’t writing, she’s gaming or working out or getting lost in the mountains that loom large outside the windows in her home. Or she’s dealing with a flooded basement, or standing in a line at Walmart reading the tabloid headlines and wondering who all of those people are. Or sitting on her back porch with a glass of wine, looking up at the stars, trying to figure out what could be up there.

Jennsen does not disappoint from start to finish in this tightly written, tension-filled story that evolves with Eren in the different roles of negotiator/mediator instead of a bash-to-fit-it-and-damn-anyone-in-the-way attitude. With the marvels of human, Anaden, and Asterion technologies, Eren integrates with a new species and its unique character and sets out to solve a mystery. And Eren is forced to deal with Nxy - the dark sole of his existence. - only to open the proverbial can of worms!

A great read!

I absolutely loved this novel. Of course, I am a HUGE fan of the character Eren Savitas. It was great to spend more time with him.

While on the planet Ares, Eren spots something weird. Upon following his instincts, he becomes embroiled in an investigation, far from home.

Nyx, needing a break from, well, people in general, joins him, and together, they must save a species who condones thievery as a means of advancing and protecting their people.

Once again, Ms. Jennsen writes a compelling narrative filled with tension, surprises, humor, and action. The Thief is a fun, joyride to another galaxy and beyond.

This stand-alone novel is definitely going into my "To Be Re-Read" pile.

I read The Thief as part of a judging team for the fourth annual Self-Published Science Fiction Competition (SPSFC4), where it is in our first round allocation.

The Thief takes place in a wider universe but is easily readable as a standalone, featuring an intelligence officer and former soldier haring off on a sketchy mission based entirely on gut feelings—generally correct ones—and finding himself in the middle of a heretofore unknown alien species fighting to stay alive at the hands of an invisible and powerful enemy.

The Thief seems to be aiming at being an entertaining space opera, and it largely delivers. There’s not really anywhere where it pushes the envelope, but it’s well-paced and always has a new mystery to solve or danger to fight. There is a romantic subplot that I didn’t much care for that takes a decent amount of page time in the third quarter, which took me out of the 3.5-star zone and into the 3-star zone, but it’s a story that does what it aims to do, is very accessible, and ties up enough loose ends that readers aren’t committed to the rest of the series.

First impression: 12/20. Full review and SPSFC status to come at www.tarvolon.com

If you’ve followed my Amaranthe reviews since…well, since Relativity , you know it’s no secret that I adore Eren with all my little heart. Which is actually kind of interesting, because he’s such a chaotic character—you’d think he’d stress me out. But he’s just so well-written (I can hear him speaking on the page) and the rollercoaster of a character arc he’s gone through since his introduction has been nothing short of spellbinding.

It’s actually been about 2.5 years since I learned this book was coming down the pipe, and I have spent that entire time eagerly awaiting it. Readers, if you’re new to the Amaranthe series, this book is a fantastic introduction to the type of characters, action, and galaxy-spanning intrigue you’ll find throughout the rest of the saga. There may be a few details you’ll have questions about, but otherwise you can enjoy this book with no prior knowledge of the series. Like Medusa Falling , this is a fast-paced, standalone adventure story, but if you’re an Amaranthe veteran, you already know that Eren is capable of making a story fast-paced and adventurous merely by existing, regardless of what else might be happening in the plot.

In this installment, Eren quickly finds himself entangled with the Hesgyr, a unique new alien race with a knack for thievery. But naturally, a situation that seems pretty cut and dried on the surface turns out to be much more complicated and nuanced than he anticipated (do we expect anything else from this series?). There’s a mystery to be solved and a sinister plot to thwart, and since all the Hesgyr’s attempts at fixing these problems themselves have failed thus far, who better to call on for some solutions—especially some unconventional ones—than Eren?

But he’s hardly alone in this endeavor. In addition to assistance from his new Hesgyr allies—who are fresh and compelling in their own right, which is quite a feat after 20 books—he’s got backup from none other than Aeryn Sun our favorite ex-Inquisitor. I’ve loved Nyx’s character even since her days of terrorizing the main cast as a diati-wielding tool of the Anaden Directorate, and I’ve needed her evolving dynamic with Eren injected directly into my veins over the last few books. Their clashing personalities and methods of operation made for a unique and exciting approach to problem solving, and I can’t wait to see how the two of them continue to grow and build off each other in the future.

(Truly, the only thing that would have made this book completely flawless was more Corradeo. Half of my reviews give disproportionate attention to my three Anaden cinnamon rolls.)

Eren and Nyx working together - drama and explosions!

Note: I was provided a copy of this book by the author. All opinions in this review are completely my own.

I should mention that I have read pretty much everything else that GSJ has published. I enjoyed this one as well. Most of GSJ’s other stories are of epic proportions with many diverse characters. The Thief is much smaller, involving “only” two new races of aliens. The larger backdrop has (and I quote) “three trillion people belonging to sixty-two galaxies and over 5,000 inhabited planets hosting thirteen advanced species and numerous protected ones”. This is a stand-alone story with characters from GSJ’s Amaranthe universe and adds a couple of new races of aliens.

Eren follows a shapeshifting thief and ends up in the middle of a conflict with a mysterious enemy who uses an unusual and devastating weapon. He’s working to solving the mystery when Nyx arrives to help him. That’s when it gets complicated. They’re both strong independent types used to working alone.

As in GSJ’s other stories, there’s advanced tech, action, and interesting people. I especially enjoyed how the imperfect characters and troubled aliens worked together and learned to get along in spite of their past. Along the way there’s blood, explosions, shouting, and shooting.

I find GSJ’s story craftsmanship to be comparable to the best SciFi that I’ve read, and I have read a lot! So if you liked this story too, be sure to check out the others!

Another superb instalment, led by Eren who spots a thief, secretes himself on their ship and find himself caught up with an unknown race, the Hesgyr. A fantastic read, as usual, with great sci-fi, interesting complex characters, plenty of humour, tension and some lust for good measure. Can be read standalone but highly recommend the fore runners. You won't be disappointed!

Great addition to the series

I didn't realise how much I would enjoy Nyx and Eren's story and now I need another chapter!

The book is what GS Jennsen does so well, a big dose of adventure, characters that are so well rounded that you become attached to them and a wonderful imagination creating the believable worlds that the characters inhabit. Can't wait for the next one!

Captivating, as always

This latest adventure in the epic Amaranthe universe has it all: mystery, action, thought provoking dialogue, romance, real life characters... As always, it makes one crave for more.

Always enjoy GS Jennsen's work -- thoughtful, exciting, great science, interesting characters and fun scenarios. I wish we had some politicians on Earth who were more like Eren, Alex, Caleb etc.
Delightful to spend time in this Universe.

This book was awesome, as are all of GSJ's works. Her ability to merge existing characters into an entire new subset of her universe is very rare. I never get bored.

Please keep up the great work!

always good to blow something up

Another great read in the series. The politics of changing the views of a people with their own history and cultures didn’t stop Eren from inserting himself into trouble again. What’s the worst they can do, kill him so he regenerates? Us there is a list of ways he has died rated by most painful.

Knocked it out of the park, again.

Loved this story. The characters we knew were even better, and the new found ones were great as well. An adventurishly fun addition to Jennsen's universe. One with a very strong underlying message.

Great new story line.

New characters and settings, but Amaranthe adjacent, make this book a departure from the previous story lines. But, that makes room for new worlds and inhabitants possibilities. This creative and engrossing departure will please most of Jennsen’s fans. (Small wonder that it has already won a prize). Prepare yourself for a new dose of the author’s marvelous creativity at world building and character creation.

In 2014 I read "Starshine", a novel by G.S. Jennsen, a brand new author. I was blown away! I remember thinking, at the time, this author is going to go somewhere! Now, 10 years later, I just finished "The Thief" by G.S. Jennsen. Again, blown away! After 20 or more books (I've lost count) this author has created yet another fresh and captivating adventure.

"The Thief" is a stand-alone story in Jennsen's Amaranthe Universe. However, familiarity with the Amaranthe setting is absolutely unnecessary to thoroughly enjoy this great story. I will admit to an occasional chuckle, though, when something familiar was mentioned that I had felt during a previous encounter with a particular character or circumstance. Eren and Nyx have appeared before, and although they were not exactly peripheral characters, they were not the main protagonists in those books, nor did they always appear together. So, I was delighted to see them appear this time in thier very own story.

Erin and Nyx are complicated, multidimensional characters that are entirely different from each other in personality, motivation, and personality. So, it was interesting to see them interact in this setting. The diverse personalities of each of Jennsen's myriad cast-of-characters, spanning numerous stories, species, and settings, are meticulously developed with a depth that makes them astonishingly real. Eren's and Nyx's personalities and the those of the others they meet, drive the storyline of this adventure. I must add, however, that because this story is significantly character-driven, that does not preclude the fact that Jennsen is an exquisite story-teller and world-builder (or in her case, universe-builder).

This excitement and feeling of adventure begins quickly in the first few sentences and continues throughout the novel. Whether the exhiliration comes from the situation in which Eren and Nyx are enmeshed, or from the characters themselves, it is nevertheless, present at the turn of each page. I zipped through this book because it was so much fun to read and then when I was finished, wished it would have continued on to another adventure. I would love to see Eren and Nyx re-appear in another story.

I don't often rate books with 5 stars, not even all of Ms. Jennsen's books. But this one is just great Science Fiction Fun.

I feel like a broken record because always upon finishing a book by G.S, Jennson, I always think, Dang, she's done it again.
I loved the Amaranthe Series and rightly Jennsen has become my favorite author. The series was so epic and so consuming that I hated it ended. Which is usual for any good book, but she does such a compelling job with the characters, the storylines, the worlds she colors that I wasn't sure at first about this new venture into Amaranthe; the Cosmic Shores novels.
After the epics, these are standalone stories. Now having read two of them I can say with confidence they are every bit as enjoyable.
The Thief introduces new species, and as always she lets you in quickly to who and what they are. Dealing with these species is a favorite character from her universe, Eren Savitas. I love his attitude and his humor and now he's out to solve a mystery in the way that only he can. He's a hoot!
New ideas, and new threats, I am amazed at how she comes up with so much, it's truly a book that's hard to put down. It's also a pleasure to see how family, friends and lovers all interact and work on personal dilemmas beyond the main arc of the story.
Yep, she's done it again.

My, what a blast! Really, how does GSJ keep coming up with such riveting yarns?

Do not start reading "The Thief" with the idea you'll stretch it over a few days. Not going to happen...

Once you start, that's it, block off the next 4-5 hours and immerse yourself In some great story-telling.

I really don't want to say much, except that the story features a few familiar faces and a new species with some unusual characteristics. And you will feel well satiated by the satisfying end... with a clear direction laid out... There, that's sufficiently opaque :)

I read many authors, but the ones that I can rely on to consistently deliver is a very small number. I have never been disappointed with the structure, pace and intrigue that GSJ continues to supply us voracious readers with.

Get it, set aside some time ... you will not be disappointed, but, if anything, hungry for more from this remarkably talented author. Highly recommended.

Once again we're taken on a rip roaring adventure, this time with Eren who fast became one of my favourite characters in the Amaranthe universe.

Curiosity killed the cat so they say but for Eren it's just another day to find trouble, a mystery and discover another part of the universe - and just when we thought it couldn't get any bigger. With new worlds to explore, new races to get to know and a problem to be solved Eren is in his element and getting to follow him around was fun and exciting. Add Nyx into the mix and we have added tension and a hint of romance which makes for an all round book.

I have been in awe of everything in the Amaranthe world since Starshine and this book only adds to that. How G. S. Jennsen comes up with these races, worlds and ideas is mind blowing and I would love five minutes inside her mind. For anyone not familiar with the Amaranthe universe this book is a great starting point and after reading it I'm pretty sure you'll want more. I know I do.

it takes repeating

I have repeatedly said she has done it again, but this time GS has went above and beyond what I expected. As she branched off into individual charters I believed the story would not have all the adventures and excitement as the Amaranthe universe . I was so wrong and then to add an excerpt from Starshine was like having a slip back to where it all began. G S Jennsen is like one of the brightest stars in her universe, and her charters are the planets circling .
I know this doesn’t say a lot about this amazing book but after all this time I am still amazed by her talent . Come see what I am talking about and fly through the Amaranthe universe.

Disclaimer: I have not read any of the Amaranthe books. I bought this because it was on sale, and the blurb said it was a stand-alone adventure in the Amaranthe series. Well, sort of. Lots of allusions to earlier events in the series, and lots of (somewhat) assumed background with a little explanation. Overall, not a bad read; I tried to find on-line resources to get some additional backstory and explanation, but all I could find were the book descriptions for the previous 20 books. Anyway, it was fun, and I may try another of the "stand-alone" books. But I'm definitely not going to go back and read all of the prior books.

Eren has always been one of my favourite Amaranthine characters, so getting a whole book of him was an absolute joy. The Thief is such a fantastic read - I enjoyed every second of it and would be perfectly happy with a full series of the side adventures of Eren and Nyx.

Definitely highly recommended summer reading!

Ms Jennsen is one of my favorite authors - I own 20+ of her novels; She has an absolutely amazing imagination. This is another awesome story with unexpected twists and turns (typical for the author) As usual it does refer to characters from previous novels but this book can easily be read on it's own. Highly recommended!!!!

Excellent tale that covers major political and diplomatic issues, personal relationships and character growth over the course of the events. The details of the activities of the primary and secondary characters fit well with the overall insight into social issues.

Unputdownable. Another brilliant space opera stand alone book in the Amaranthe universe. G.S Jennsen writing is up there with the masters of this genre. Believable characters you learn to love. I can't rate this highly enough.

A very enjoyable book, especially for being the 21st in a series and not having read any of the previous books. I was very happy that it worked so well as a stand alone. I figure the main character in this one is probably the main character in the others, and they've had interactions with some of the other characters, but G.S. Jennsen does a great job of reintroducing the character backstory through the book, and developing it further. If you're looking for a fun sci-fi with characters that will grow on you, then this is one to pick up for sure.
