A deadly tournament. A horrendous secret. An unjust war–and two girls with the power to end it.

Weeks have passed since their heroic rescue of the Barkurian royal family, but for Katiel Salzbruck and Brenna Malley, the danger is far from over.

Seeking revenge after his betrayal, Katiel tracks down Anton, who shares a shocking revelation that could change everything. He knows the mastermind behind the war and plans to stop him by earning the Drezchy throne in a deadly tournament known as the Conclave—but he needs Katiel to serve as his Court Wielder to win.

On the Continent, Brenna’s frustration grows as the newly minted queen refuses to take steps to end the war. When negotiations finally begin and Dakier is stationed at the castle as a translator, Brenna believes things are looking up. But Dakier holds a horrendous secret, one that threatens their budding romance and the world as Brenna knows it.

Despite an ocean separating them, Katiel and Brenna will ultimately face the same test—the battle between their hearts and minds as they fight to restore peace to their world.

4.5 ⭐️

When I tell you this book stressed me the hell out, I mean crippling anxiety so strong I woke up my mom in the middle of the night and we ate ice cream to calm down. I can fully understand why this book has been released over a year after Ink and Ore - the author fully locked in. The improvements make it seem like all of my (minor) complaints from the last book never even happened.

Not only was this a rollercoaster to read, you can tell the author had such fun writing it. Miss Whiteley fully took advantage of the multiple character POV chapters and it KILLED me every time. Instead of waiting till the end of a book to add a cliff hanger she just waited till the end every chapter. It’s genius. It was thrilling (and devastating). She even learned witchcraft since releasing the last book, and apparently is now a fortune teller. I remember thinking, oh it would be so nice to see what is going on in the castle right now from the queen’s perspective and then BAM. Exactly what I wanted.

And when I say each page revealed a new trope, I don’t mean in a janky-tik-tok-appealing-mess-of-a-book kind of way. It just simply has everything. Romance, scheming, girl bossing, character development, nuance, battle scenes, plot twists- oh don’t get me started on the plot twists! Miss Whiteley had me thrown for a loop! I was unable to guess a SINGLE one of these and no, it was not because the plot was a mess. I loved the plot. You can tell everything was crafted with such care for it to make so much sense in hindsight but not immediately given away.

As someone who spent all of ink and ore hating on Dakier (for no good reason, everything is down to vibes), I am legally required to admit that he and Brenna make a good match. She’s a baddie (who Miss Whiteley clearly noticed and decided to nerf her by giving her the slightly less interesting plot line) and Dakier is gentle I guess. We love down bad men in this house hold what can I say (not saying I like Dakier).

Though I guess I support them as a couple (if I have to, it’s whatever) they are also the reason this book is not five stars for me. The lack of nuance in Brenna and Dakier’s dynamic after a certain incident reminded me of the weird character interactions displayed in book 1. I do understand grief is difficult to write about, but a certain depth, especially on Brenna’s end seemed to be lacking. What was supposed to be a vulnerable situation was made forced and unnatural to read.

All in all, as you can tell by this review, I clearly would recommend this book, in fact I AM! Go read it! It is so so good! Please please please give me the next one ASAP! Please Miss Whiteley 🙏

Thank you so much for the arc

Mrs. Whiteley has a good framework for a solid story in Dawn and Dust. I am normally a character driven reader, but I found that it was the plot that kept me reading, so kudos to her for being able to keep me reading based on plot. Her characters went on a selfless mission to seek an end to a needless war, and I can get behind that. I also can get behind a YA book that is squeaky clean in the foul-language department. Not a single curse, if I remember correctly. I also enjoyed the fact that the MCs are two friends and that the romance elements were side plots.

I applied to be an arc reader for this book after reading Ink and Ore. I thought that it was a decent debut novel, and I wanted to see where Whiteley took the story and how she improved as a writer. I will offer my critique to the author, hoping to be helpful, rather than critical, and am not going to rate the book.

First of all, I would recommend learning how to put more "flesh" on the "bones" of your story. There wasn't enough development of thoughts and feelings to support your characters' actions and dialogue, so things often felt forced or choppy. For example, the former sexual abuse that is brought into this story has no build-up. It just gets dropped into a romantic scene with no foreshadowing or emotional development in that character, and then it is barely mentioned again.

Related to developing the story more was the fact that one person in particular learned way to quickly how to wield and that when the characters end up back with Katiel's family, there is nothing on page regarding their time there. I felt that Katiel having time with her parents would have been important. Furthermore, Anton's role as the Ghost needed to be developed more. He is called the Ghost, but it's not fleshed out how he demonstrates those "ghost-like" qualities that would have led to the nickname. He became the executioner, but Ghost doesn't seem to fit that.

Also, I found repetitive and sometimes awkward phrasing, which took me out of the story over and over again. Expressions such as "arms flailing," "showing all her teeth," "picking at her cuticles," "punching a fist into the air," "barking out a laugh," etc. were overused and became awkward.

I also felt that the world-building was sparse except for the stark differences in physical appearance, which I found unlikely given that these are countries that border each other by land. (Thinking especially of Dakier.)

Despite the above problems, I am interested enough in the plot to want to know what happens in the last installment. Like I said, Whiteley has a good framework here, and I think she has the makings of a good writer. Keep writing, Mrs. Whiteley!

Content Warnings:

1. The MCs can be quite bold in their sexual advances with their love-interests. Marriage is never discussed, but moves are made to further their physical relationships, implying in at least one case that she would have pursued sexual intimacy if something had not stopped them.
2. Two LGBTQ side characters in a relationship, but nothing is discussed regarding their physical relationship.

Omg! Where do I start? This sequel was so good. I read the ARC of Ink and Ore last year and I couldn’t wait to read the next chapter of this story. It was even better than I thought it would be. Packed with action, Hailey took us on a trip that left me wanting for more. The romance did not take away from the main storyline, but only added to it. I definitely recommend this book if you enjoyed the first one in the series. I can’t wait to read the final one!!!!

Thank you Hayley Whiteley for adding me to the ARC team, however all of these opinions are my own. I loved the first book in the series, and I think I loved this one even more, I read it in a little over a week, and devoured it! It's action packed and I love that Brenna and Katiel's friendship with each other remained the driving force of their actions throughout this book! Can't wait for the next book in this series!

Thank you Hayley for the ARC in exchange for my honest review!

This was a great addition to book one, and I enjoyed the four POVs, Katiel, Brenna, Dakier, and Anton, as it keeps the story flowing and we are able to get more details of what is happening.

Katiel's character growth was fantastic, and I enjoyed her becoming more confident in her abilities while helping those around her. I tend to write spoiler-free reviews, so I won't be going more in depth here :) Anton is a great complement to her personality with helping her learn more about ore wielding; although everything felt a little too "insta-lust" but they are also teenagers, which having been a teenager this felt like an accurate representation of teenage love.

Brenna also had great character growth. For someone who was separated from her friends and is now living in a castle doing a job she's never done, she grew a lot into who she is. I really enjoy her and Dakier together, even if some of it was a little awkward and she forgave him a little too quick.

I did NOT see the big plot twist coming, and I am unsure of how I feel about it. It seemed to really come out of nowhere, and even with the explanations throughout the end of the book left me a little confused, especially with the few people who knew and their involvement in it. There were also a few moments where I was thinking the logic didn't quite make sense, but overall Dawn & Dust was a solid sequel to Ink & Ore.

Because I don’t really like reading books from my laptop or phone I completely forgot about the ARC that is Dawn and Dust sitting in my files. Last week I finally remembered and started reading, with reading the second half of the book in one seating.

Ink and Ore was a clear 5 stars for me, because it got me excited to read again, filled me with joy and kept me on my toes. I absolutely loved the characters (apparently people hated Dakier, haha?) and enjoyed the plot twists/reveals.

Now, for Dawn and Dust. It took me a while to get back into the story again and when I did, sometimes the way the chapter pov’s switched felt a bit disturbing instead of having a positive impact on the anticipation. I did really enjoy seeing the messy, but in my opinion rather realistic way the relationships in the story developed throughout the situations.

I received an ARC copy of this book!

While I felt like Ink and Ore was a bit of a slow stroll - Dawn and Dust delivered a mad dash and I LOVED every moment of it.

This book was darker and the stakes - so much higher. Our MC's remain split for the majority of the story but the POV's were simple to follow and the build up from one moment to the next was perfect. I truly felt like I was watching the MC's "grow-up" on the pages. We get a more in-depth understanding of the magic system and back-stories for our favorite boys.

I always appreciate a book that ends on a cliff-hanger while still leaving me with answers and a sense of fulfillment.

The only reason I didn't give this a full 5 stars ... potential spoiler warning and a bit of rambling coming... .

Despite that drawback - this was a fun and fast read and I can't wait to see how this trilogy ends!

This sequel picks up where the first left off, and while it still carries that same spirit of hope and idealism, it also takes a darker turn that tests both the characters and the world around them. One of the things I loved most about Ink and Ore was the friendship at its core—two girls naively trying to stop a war with the power of truth and determination. In Dawn and Dust, that friendship is fractured by distance and circumstance, and while I missed the dynamic of Katiel and Brenna together, their separate journeys brought a lot of growth and complexity. But while I enjoyed returning to this world, Dawn and Dust didn’t quite hit the same way Ink and Ore did for me.

While I definitely missed the friendship aspect being front and center (something that made the first so unique), I liked the opportunity to see these young women grow individually. Brenna’s storyline had some lovely emotional depth—especially with how things played out between her and Dakier. After the ending of book one, I wasn’t sure how their relationship could recover, but it felt genuine and thoughtful here. There was real care in how their feelings evolved, and I liked that Brenna got to be angry instead of rushing into forgiveness.

Katiel and Anton, though, were the real highlight. I adore Anton—his moral ambiguity and the quiet vulnerability underneath the bravado. Their arc was darker, especially with the introduction of the Conclave and Anton’s history, and I thought it was the most compelling part of the book. His sister also stood out—her disability is never a limitation, and I love how capable and self-assured she is.

However, there were a few things that held this back for me. First and foremost: there’s a backstory element involving implied childhood SA, and it’s just... not handled well for me. It’s brushed over, referenced vaguely, and ultimately doesn’t seem to impact the plot or character development in a meaningful way. If you’re going to include something that heavy, it needs to be addressed with more care. Instead, it felt like a half-buried narrative thread that the book didn’t want to explore fully. And that's FINE, but I wish that it just wasn't included.

The magic system also kind of unraveled here. It’s never been super rigid as a system, but now it feels like it’s making things up as it goes. There aren’t clear limits or rules, and that makes the stakes feel murky. I wasn’t sure what characters could or couldn’t do anymore, and that confusion chipped away at some of the tension.

The pacing and emotional beats were still solid—especially the way the story balanced romance and internal growth—but overall, this felt a bit more uneven than the first book. The twists surprised me often (in a good way), and I liked seeing how much the characters have matured, but it didn't resonate quite as much for me as the first did.

Still, it’s an enjoyable read. I love the heart of this series and the focus on relationships—both romantic and platonic. Solid 3.5 stars from me.

Thanks so much to the author for the opportunity to read and review and for the complimentary copy. This review is voluntary, and all opinions are my own.

This was an incredible sequel to the first book. It picks up immediately where the first left off, leaving nothing unanswered. This action-packed adventure will leave you on the edge of your seat. The character development is so immaculate, you can't help but find yourself rooting for them to win, fall in love, get revenge, and above all, stay alive.

There is definitely more romance in this book, but, for me, still too tame to consider labeling this as a romance. This is definitely a single 🌶, if that. The high fantasy world Hayley created has so much going on, the romance isn't needed, but is a clear and natural progression of the characters as they evolve and grow.

The inclusion of disabled characters is a welcomed and natural fit to this story. I hope more authors consider addicting the complexity of a disabled person's character development into their books as well. Hayley did an outstanding job, in my opinion, of making said character more than her disabilities while not shying away from the natural hindrances they caused.

Overall, it was a marvelous book, and one I would recommend over and over again.

I want to say first that I appreciate being on the ARC team. I loved Ink & Ore, so I was very excited to read the second book! That said, this one was like pulling teeth for me and I found I wasn’t as excited to pick it up during the last 5 days. The story flowed easily in the first book and I liked the characters, but something about this just made them either unlikeable or feel out of character. The plot is there and I will say that I am planning to try to reread the book because it has a lot of potential.

This book had me hooked from the start! I enjoyed that we picked up right where Ink and Ore left off. The continued character development and constant action kept me engaged, with many good twists! Reading more of Anton's backstory were some of my favorite chapters. I found this to be my favorite of the chronicles so far and look forward to reading more! Thanks to Hayley for allowing me to be part of the ARC team!!

I have been **waiting** to read Dawn & Dusk since I finished Ink & Ore! We pick right back up with Katiel and Brenna on their respective journeys and SO much happens! Hayley does a wonderful job describing the political intricacies within her world building as well as the complicated relationships between her characters. I love that the girls’ friendship remains at the heart of this story.

I got to read this book as an ARC and let me tell you, it did NOT disappoint! This book was action packed and picked up right after the first book left off. Although Katiel and Brenna aren’t physically together, they are doing everything they can to do the right thing for their countries. The storyline was gripping and the romance between the main characters had me giggling and kicking my feet. What a great story Hayley is writing. I can’t wait for more!!

I really enjoyed everything about this book. I received a copy of an ARC and am so thankful I was gifted to read this before it's official release. Hayley Whiteley really amped things up for Dawn and Dust. The characters and their own growth, the story arc, the descriptions, the adventure, and the magic really made me so enthralled I had to force myself to actually get some sleep. The world building in Ink and Ore really set everything up so well for Dawn and Dust, that you don't even need a reminder for how things work and what's been happening, and Hayley weaves in the reminders in such a beautiful way through characters memories and even their actions and thoughts. You will not be disappointed in the fun adventure waiting for you in Dawn and Dust!

Loved this book! I was glad I had recently read Ink and Ore, since this book takes place immediately after. Very much enjoyed the parallel story lines of Katiel and Brenna, with my favorite storyline being the Conclave and Katiel's development as a wielder. That being said, I wish we could have experienced the final event of Conclave. Excited for what is to come in the rest of the series! Thank you Hayley for including me on the ARC team!

CW: violence, death, referenced/implied SA of a child, familial loss, some others

Thank you to the author for allowing me to be a part of the ARC team! “Dawn and Dust” releases April 9, 2025!

I told you book two would be better.

Despite the rescue of the royal children and the subsequent revelation of the falsehood that started it all, war still rages between Bar Kur and Tibedo. Desperate to end the bloodshed, Brenna attempts to use her new position to turn the tides and halt the war. At the harbor, Katiel stands poised to change her entire life. Stay on the continent, or journey across the seas with Anton in an attempt to win a competition for the throne.

As previously stated, book 2 was a better read, at least for me. There’s plenty going on, there’s interesting twists, and I found myself wanting to know what happened next. There was a little bit of a hang up for me at the very beginning of the book, though. In the content warning section (bonus points for including one, naturally), the author notes that the book is intended for ages 13 and up. Maybe I was just overly sheltered, but this isn’t a book I would be comfortable recommending to that age range. Maybe mid teens (15-16), but certainly not 13. Again, this is personal opinion only; everyone should evaluate for themselves and their respective wards regarding content. Moving on.

One of the things I find most intriguing about this series, but especially so here where we got a slightly better look at the day to day interactions, is the blend of ‘standard’ fantasy setting and an almost steampunk/gaslamp vibe. I really don’t know how else to describe it, but it’s incredibly interesting to see how this world exists. I’d have liked to see more of it, but the backdrop we do get seems to fit the rest of the book.

The storyline was decently paced, alternating between what I would call ‘brisk’ and truly ‘fast.’ There’s not a lot of downtime in between major events, so there was almost always something going on. I think a lot of this is because we rotate focus between Brenna and Dakier on the continent and Katiel and Anton in New Drezchy. Personally, I prefer books that keep things moving, so this was fun for me.

I did have a little bit of a hangup with our characters (specifically Brenna, but to a much lesser extent also Katiel) still being incredibly naive about how wars and people work. Maybe I’m a cynic, or maybe I’m just old, but I had to constantly remind myself that one, these are basically children and they have very little foundation for this knowledge yet and two, it’s only been about two weeks since the last book occurred. The information hasn’t really had time to marinate for them yet; they still believe that wars can be stopped with just the truth. Again, this is almost certainly just because I’m well out of the target age range for the series, but it is what it is.

All in all, I enjoyed this story. It felt a little stronger than book 1, the action stayed more engaging, and there were more moving parts to keep track of. It’s still fairly low key as far as fantasy goes, but it’s a solid foundation, especially if the author is aiming it predominantly at a YA audience. As long as you go into it knowing and expecting it to be more surface level, I think readers of any age would enjoy the story.

Note: I have received this book as an exchange for an honest opinion!

This is the second instalment of The Kerafin Chronicles by Hayley Whiteley. It continues to follow Brenna and Katiel in their quest to bring the real culprit to light and end this war for good.

Weeks have passed since Brenna and Katiel saved Bar Kur’s royal family. Yet, the war hasn’t been called off and danger is lurking closer than you’d think. While separated by hundreds if not thousands of miles, the girls will face challenges, deadly trials and seek to spread the truth and, oddly enough, face the same test, one that could mean total warfare or peace.

This book will be released April 9, 2025!

This book sucked me in way more than the first one. I read it in 2-3 days. It's an easy read without mistakes, typos, weirdly written sentences. This already gives 1 full star from the get go: to me, the attention to detail is there and is essential. A book with such mistakes are grating on my nerves royally and a lot are doing that with this whole fast litterature trend.

I enjoyed getting back into this world and see the lore being more developed. All the main characters are relatable and flawed and well-rounded. The FMCs, Katiel & Brenna, are both becoming strong ladies, whether by coming into their power or through self discovery. The MMCs are caring, yet try to do the right thing. Dakier, in particular, is a walking green flag. All of them are endearing in their own way and, as a mama, I felt like hugging them sometimes and reassure them as they all have trauma. At times, though, they were a little too typical and predictable, but they're all about 18 years old, so I guess it's a given.

Contrarily to book 1 where the action picked up in the second half of the book, Dawn and Dust's pace is quicker and there is always something happening.

We continued to have a multiple third person POVs, but each POV has its chapter, so it really isn't confusing as whose head we're inside. The only thing though is that, as a person who isn't the biggest fan of multiple POVs, I found it somewhat broke the narrative. For example, at some points, I was really enthralled at what was going on with Katiel and Anton and cut scene, we're back at Brenna. But other than that (which is probably just my own preference), it was still smoothly done.

As for the spice, ladies and gentlemen, do not expect anything spicy or out of place. This YA book is very age appropriate. We have very little kissing and no behind closed door action.

There’s a little bit of everything in this book and I literally could not read it fast enough.

There is a dash of deadly games and trials.
There is heartbreak, secrets, betrayal… academic vibes
There is standing up for what you believe, following your heart, and fighting to make a difference.
There are complex characters (and relationships) of both good, bad, and in between.

I truly enjoy how each character has their own personality and version of intelligence.
I love clever characters.

Anton and Katiel…
A genius inventor and an ore wielder (metal magic but truly is only limited by imagination)… WHAT A COOL PAIRING
Anton is morally gray out of necessity more than anything… self preservation in a dog eat dog kind of world
Katiel who has been sheltered as a means of protection has to constantly rethink what is possible. AND I LOVE THAT

Brenna and Dakier have… well, they have a complicated relationship but I respect the way that it’s written and how they each navigate through. I love that they’ve known each other for a while so despite everything that comes their way, they can lean into that.

The magic system seems to be a bit of a mystery to everybody. That doesn’t have to be seen as a bad thing. Wielders have been hunted and executed… or used and abused. So they’re hiding and certainly not talking about the source of their magic. But BOY is their magic cool.

There are again some things that just bug me but the biggest thing is The Ghost… this figure that scares people into respecting him but hasn’t been explained. Other than generally speaking. (Hoping that it’s included in the next book as more secrets unravel).

I will ABSOLUTELY read the next book. Overall, this series has been fun.

NOTE:
There is some heavy material mentioned (child sexual assault) that is mentioned in an vulnerable situation. It is mentioned without specifics but the character is clearly struggling with long term effects (as expected). But it felt like it was just a detail added. I imagine as their relationship builds, it may resurface as they work through it but that will remain to be seen. I’m not sure what the right way to add that to a story to encourage people to speak up and find help, but this fell a little short on delivery but I respect the author trying to include difficult things.

Potential spoilers!!

3,5 stars rounding up!

First of all, thanks so much to the dear author who let me have this read as an arc, and i apologize for not being able to finish in time because of my studies..
Second, i LOVED this worldbuilding. The setup, the characters, the lore was so great, it literally has so much potential. I loved the continuous switch between the characters. Though sometimes it did make me mad where the last chapter left off, like where Dakier and Brenna were talking about wielding*I will come back to this topic.* And it switched just like that to Katiel and Anton's perspective like agghhhh come onnnnnn you cannot do me like thaatttt.
There were just a couple issues that did not add up for me. I think dear author Hayley Whiteley has so much potential of good stories, but i definitely think she needs to improve her writing style, and please, no offense. I just want to let you know you are doing great to your writing career with this incredible book! I love it. I love Brenna and Dakier. I had told this in my previous review for the first book, and i will tell it forever. In the beginning it makes you feel like Brenna is the main lead. Bit by bit you get to know she is not. Especially Dawn and Dust made me feel like it was all about Katiel and Anton... I mean, ok I get it she wields the ore and everything but it was literally always Brenna who was there for her and I dont think she got enough credit for that.
Dakier also wields the ore, we get to hear. Okaaay, then. So? What did he wield? What was his development? How did he contribute to the last battle against *cough cough* (SPOILER?!) Anton's best friend? He literally had SO MUCH potential, and i feel it got slightly wasted in Anton and Katiel's stroy.
Also, such a rude cruel uncle, and we dont even get to know why.
'The boss' just vanished. OK, then what. He is literally one of the strongest wielders right now(yes yes i know he needs the blood and everything), and he just accepted defeat and retreated? Nope. I dont buy that.
Overall, I loved this series, and i practically kept reading because of Dakier and Brenna. But aside from that, i remembered why i loved reading books thanks to this book. I love reading different stories, different lives and problems and solutions. I LOVE YOU <33

I must be honest: I read book 1 a while ago, so it's not super fresh in my memory... But still, I have no doubt in saying book 2 surpassed it!
4+++⭐ rating for me, and it could have been even higher!
Sadly, the ending was a little bit of a letdown for me, and that's why it didn't make it to 4.5⭐.
The plot twist didn't really land for me, because it involved a character I perceive as extremely minor.
Also... I know this is YA, but the villain cane across as one-dimensional to me. I had it with book 1 as well, but that one was a "side" villain, while this one is the "big deal".
It's a pity because the author CAN characterise with great nuance and realism; actually, I would consider it her greatest strength! The characters were really what made this book memorable for me.
I was curious about Brenna and Dakier after book 1's ending, and their storyline didn't disappoint. On the other hand, I wasn't into Anton and Katiel's romance, but this book won me over. Having more of the boys' POV (which were my absolute favourite!) put a lot of things into perspective.
I grew invested in them, and wanted more of their little moments together! Because of that, the ending felt a little rushed to me.
Some things I hope were addressed a bit more (hopefully in book 3?):

I often find myself liking book 2 less than book 1, but this time, the author absolutely upped her game. Her growth is undeniable and I remain in awe of how complex the characters (and the depiction of war and conflict) are, despite the YA rating. Can't wait to see where their journey takes them next!

Dawn and Dust by Hayley Whiteley is the second book in The Kerafin Chronicles, and wow, it really kicks things up a notch! Picking up right where Ink and Ore left off, we follow Katiel and Brenna as they continue their mission to stop a war that’s tearing their world apart. The world-building from the first book is so well done that you don’t need a lot of reminders, but Hayley weaves in little details perfectly through the characters’ thoughts and actions.

One of the best things about this book is the character growth. Katiel and Brenna have both come a long way since the first book, and I loved seeing them grow into their roles. Katiel’s journey as a Wielder was especially intriguing, while Brenna’s struggles with her new position and the politics of peace kept me hooked. The alternating perspectives between the two kept the story feeling fresh, although I’ll admit I was sometimes bummed when the chapter would switch from one character to the other just when things were getting really good.

The action in Dawn and Dust is non-stop, and I honestly couldn’t put the book down. It’s one of those stories where you can’t wait to see what happens next—lots of twists, some romance (sweet, not spicy), and a few emotional moments that made me want to give the characters a hug. Brenna and Dakier’s budding romance was adorable, and I loved seeing Katiel and Anton’s connection unfold as they both faced major challenges.

Some of the characters, especially Brenna, could be a little naive about the harsh realities of war. But, honestly, they’re still so young, and it makes sense in the context of the story.
Overall, Dawn and Dust was a blast to read. It’s fast-paced, packed with action, and filled with moments that’ll make you cheer for the characters. If you loved Ink and Ore, this sequel won’t let you down. And if you’re new to the series, now’s the perfect time to jump in! Can’t wait for the next book in the series! The book drops April 9, 2025, and it’s totally worth the wait.

Dawn & Dust is the second installment in The Kerafin Chronicles by Hayley Whiteley, and I had the pleasure of reading an ARC after prepping with Iron & Ore. I have to say—book two completely surpassed my expectations.

Going into Iron & Ore, I was a little hesitant since I typically stick to first-person POV, so the shift in perspective initially pushed me out of my comfort zone. But once I got to know Katiel, Brenna, Dakier, Anton, and the rest of the cast, I was hooked. I had to know what happened next.

Dawn & Dust did not disappoint. From the very first page, I was pulled right back into the richly built world of the Continent, with its distinct and vivid settings like New Drezchy and Barkur. The atmosphere, the magic, the political undercurrents—it all felt so immersive.

What I especially loved was watching Katiel and Brenna grow. Their journey of self-discovery, strength, and loyalty was beautifully done. These two best friends truly come into their own in this book, and their bravery shines in unique ways.

This is a solid five-star read for me, and I’d highly recommend it to any fantasy reader who craves a blend of adventure, intrigue, and just the right touch of romance.

4 Stars!

Thank you Haley Whiteley for the ARC of this book!

I started this immediately after finishing Ink & Ore, and it's a solid second installment of Brenna & Katiel's story! A LOT happened in this book!

What I loved:
- The magic system! After finishing Ink & Ore I wanted to know more about how the ore can be wielded and this book added a lot more about how the system works. We also learned more through world building (and I love world building in fantasy books).

My favorite parts of this book were with Katiel learning more about how to wield and create things. I don't want to spoil anything, but I am excited to see where the third book takes this series and learn more about how siphoning the ability to wield ore works, and where the ore comes from!

Themes:
- Tournament for the crown
- Political drama
- Found family & strong friendships
- Betrayal
- Wartime fantasy
- Light spice

I do think this could have been split into two books. So much happened that it felt like relationships weren't fully fleshed out, or story lines just ended abruptly. I would have loved a book focused on Katiel & Anton's story arc, then Brenna & Dakier's story, and then this series concluding with them all coming together.

Truly a super unique fantasy series, and I really can't say enough how much I enjoy the magic system in these books. I look forward to the third book!

Note: I received this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
First and foremost, thank you a thousand times Hayley Whiteley for the opportunity!
I was part of the ARC team for Ink and Ore and was very excited to be able to continue on this journey.
While I enjoyed Ink and Ore for the most part, I expected a little bit more from Dawn and Dusk and unfortunately the sequel lacked the substance and growth - for both the characters and the plot - that I was expecting.
Rather than feeling fast-paced, which is always an enjoyable and thrilling experience, I felt that many instances in the novel were rushed instead. Problems and troubles arose only to be quickly solved without much development.
The romantic relationships between characters feel as though lack real chemistry. Terrible betrayals are forgiven all too quickly for the sake of love and repairing friendships.
The story has phenomenal potential, an incredibly unique magic system, and very lovable characters. Unfortunately, the novel falls short in its impact as it lacks any character development and the plot, for a majority of the novel, felt stuck and at a stand-still.

I love to come back to this world so much and to read this book.

This book showed such a growth in all characters, the way they once more step up and fought for what they believed and ohhhhh what a fight

You got to know more about all characters and their nuances and in such environments and with such a strong plot. We see them shine through such hard time and always keep fighting for what they think is better, no matter how hard it gets, shows such selflessness and personality.

This journey was so intense since the first pages till the last chapter with an amazing ending (so far), such a thrilling and emotional ride and at the same time so beautiful in the way friendships grew stronger.

Such a roller-coaster, I sometimes was yelling like this couldn't be it this had to change and some other I was just wishing it got stuck in that moment but so far I really enjoy where this is going and although I woud prefer someone to be off the pages next book (if you know you know) I can't wait to see what happens next and to get stuck on the next book - without a doubt

I just don't want this world to end

My Review
Dawn and Dust is the follow up to Ink and Ore by Hayley Whiteley. As with the first book, Whiteley continues to craft an ever expanding world with magic, intrigue, and danger. Katiel and Brenna continue on their quest to stop the war and save the people they love.

What I really loved about this story is the fierce devotion and friendship between Katiel and Brenna that spans across any distance or situation. I also enjoyed the ongoing development of Anton and Dakier and how they step up to help the women they love. The world Whiteley created expands to include some very interesting characters and locations that were exciting to meet and see.

Dawn and Dust has everything a reader is looking for when it comes to an enjoyable tale that catches your attention and doesn’t let go. Friendship, courage, intrigue, heartbreak, and some gasp worthy moments I didn’t see coming. I am looking forward to continuing the journey with Katiel, Brenna, Anton, and Dakier in the next book.

💜Anton really has his reasons. Happy Reading! 💜

I was an arc reader for this book, and I honestly went into this book not expecting to be as pleased with it as I was. Hayley Whiteley grew drastically in her writing style, and I was pleasantly surprised, even within just the first chapter. This book was better than the first in that the thought processes of the characters were shorter and more concise. I really enjoyed the plot of this book. Katiel and Brenna get plenty of page time, as well as Anton and Dakier, which was much appreciated. The characters began to come into themselves, much more so than Ink and Ore, the first book. Katiel grew significantly in her skills and I was so happy when she actually figured out how to wield ore properly! Brenna's POV was fun to read in that she was much more assertive; she also had to learn to forgive Dakier, which Hayley wrote masterfully. I also really enjoyed the plot twist that *spoiler* Simeon was the boss of the whole war between the different countries. I never would have guessed that. Overall, I would recommend this book to any YA fantasy lovers.

Dawn and Dust is the sequel to the outstanding tale Ink and Ore by indie author Hayley Whiteley. What stands out most for me in this story is the magic system, the use of ore as a way to create and build things. Katie and Brenna's friendship spans any distance or situation, making for strong characters. The compelling male characters Anton and Dakier make for some swoony romance but also show how men can support the women in their lives and not take over and fix everything. The world-building by the author makes for an excellent opportunity to explore the world as our characters try to stop the false and ongoing wars. The showdown with the main evil character at the end is nail-biting and sets us up nicely for the third book in this series. Dawn and Dust is everything a reader is looking for when it comes to unique, outstanding fantasy read, friendship, courage, intrigue, heartbreak, and the unique ways that ore is used. Eager for the next book.

We pick up shortly after the events of ink & Ore, and Brenna and Katiel set off on separate journeys, but with one goal in mind - ending the current war and getting back to those they love safely. As each girl goes through their own trials, they learn to not only rely on their individual strengths, but to put trust in those close to them, and allow them to help.

After book one, I was very intrigued to see expansion in both the magic system and political implications of the ongoing war. Unfortunately, that is not what we got. I felt like the story was quite rushed and did not flow as easily as it did in book one. There were several plot points that seemingly came out of nowhere and were not given the attention and detail they deserved. The backstories I was craving were not provided, the elements of magic were given to those and wielded perfectly with no prior knowledge of how, and the ending fell flat with minimal eluding to what comes next.
