Following on from the success of the original Big Book of Questions and Answers, this book tackles the many questions that children have about Jesus, An answer is given for each question, accompanied by a page of reading and a memory verse. To help the children take the message on board there are activities and suggestions for discussion. Prayers are also given to encourage them to bring every aspect of life to their Heavenly Father. An invaluable tool for introducing children to Jesus and helping them to get to know Him better, in an enjoyable and interactive way. Short listed for ‘Christian Children’s Book of the Year’.
Sinclair B. Ferguson is Associate Preacher at St Peter's Free Church in Dundee and also Distinguished Visiting Professor of Systematic Theology at Westminster Theological Seminary, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was Senior Minister of First Presbyterian Church of Columbia, South Carolina and prior to that, he was minister of St. George's-Tron Church in Glasgow.
We slowly worked through this as a family and found it to be a decent devotional resource. Admittedly, we did not do many of the exercises and also had to break up each Q&A into more than one day, but with Ferguson you know you're getting good Bible teaching. In this volume, I was pleasantly surprised at his ability to package his normal insights appropriately to a younger audience.
Good book walking through a lot of questions and answers about God and Jesus. It is geared towards kids, and that may be where I have my greatest struggle with the book. Ferguson can sometimes be a bit wordy (all of the Q&As are the same length - 2 pages, they just feel wordy at times), which can be a challenge for kids to follow. In addition, the ways he simplifies some of the narratives and topics of Scripture for the young audience stray into questionable territory. Nothing heretical or anything like that, but his examples are a bit of a stretch at times as he tries to apply what the Bible says about a topic. Unless you are reading this with older kids, be prepared to do some additional explaining as you read it.
My children really enjoyed this book. There were some things I had to edit as I read, as I thought the author took too many liberties with paraphrasing the words of Jesus and untold details about His childhood. Otherwise, it was a fun, interesting, and solid book without images of God (and yet at times instructing the children to draw pictures of God, so we just did not partake in those parts.) I would have liked a little more consistency in the activities but that is being nitpicking. Overall, I'd recommend it and we will probably read it again in the future!
This was a useful tool for focusing on the person and work of Jesus in our family worship. The commentary along with each question was much longer in this book than in the original Big Book of Questions and Answers, which had its positives and negatives. I appreciate how Ferguson brings scriptural truth to ground level and invites personal application and reflection for those of all ages.
