Mark Haddon is an English novelist, best known for The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time (2003). He won the Whitbread Award, the Dolly Gray Children's Literature Award, the Guardian Prize, and a Commonwealth Writers Prize for his work.
This book is about a picky eater, Toni. She gets along great with her Uncle, except when it comes to meal times. She only cares to eat tomato soup. One night after dinner, a magical genie appeared and granted her one wish. She wished for tomato soup and soon everything was tomato soup. Suddenly everything she knew was tomato soup. It rained tomato soup, the faucet dripped tomato soup, the dog and cat's food dishes were full of tomato soup. Then the genie came back and reversed the wish and she woke up from a dream. Although, as she stepped in her sneakers it SQUISHED it was full of tomato soup! It makes you wonder if it was a dream or not.
I always loved this picture book because I could follow along with the words. It'd be good for a kindergarten or first grade classroom. The pages are bright, colorful and funny! An activity for a first or second grade classroom would be to draw a picture of one wish they would ask a genie and then combine them into a booklet so they could compare with their friends.
