Liz Lawler had a 20-year career as a nurse and later became a general manager of a five star hotel, followed by a stint as a flight attendant with British Airways. Born in Kent, Liz was part of a large family having 11 siblings. She discovered the solitude of writing, after coming home from a busy nightshift in the emergency department, was a place where she could step away from an emotionally and physically demanding job. She now lives in Bath with her family and writes in any place that has a quiet space.
Sarah's husband is found dead in their home. Charlie and Nick are the detectives on the case. Sarah and Nick used to be in a relationship.
Meh, didn't love it. Maybe because there were 3 narrators and 2 of them were both detectives on the case 🤷♀️. I wasn't invested in much of the story or characters really. Kathleen gives off creepster vibes. Yeah there were some secrets, but nothing impressive. I did like the why of why something was done though. I bet that doesn't make too much sense unless you read it.
I was fortunate enough to receive a kindle copy and the audiobook to review. I started out reading it, then switched to audio, which is how I tackled most of it.
Narrated by Sarah Durham for 11 hours and 7 minutes, easy to follow at 2x. She didn't even try to do male voices, and I suppose that's okay since it's told in 3rd person. Luckily the chapters were labeled with names, so we knew who was talking.
*Thanks to Bookouture, Bookouture Audio, the author and NetGalley for the advance audiobook and ARC. I am voluntarily leaving my honest review*
Like my peanut butter and jelly, I like my twists spread throughout the novel rather than all lumped together. An even spread, right to the edges, makes every bite enjoyable. With the last 10% of this book setting off like a firecracker revealing secrets upon secrets, it made for a soporific read for the majority of the book. Don’t get me wrong, the prologue and the first chapter got my attention…to the point where I didn’t want to eat my lunch…but I found trudging through the police procedurals, superfluous material, and the mindless chatter between constables a wee bit tedious. It’s too bad because the first chapters with the focus on the hospital were superb. The author’s career experience shone in her words; she took me into the ward and the morgue and had me smelling the rubber gloves and chemicals and hearing the noises just beyond the ward. I was right there.
A former boyfriend, the ex-boyfriend’s work mentor, a curious co-worker, and a newlywed …all well-crafted, unlikeable characters…provide enough clues to follow them closely as suspects. It’s definitely a character-driven novel and an interesting premise. I didn’t know who to trust and was wowed by the ending.
The Nurse's Secret takes a bit of patience as you wait for the big reveal. Those who love police procedurals and character-driven novels will find this one satisfying.
I was gifted this advance copy by Bookouture and NetGalley and was under no obligation to provide a review.
I hadn't read any Liz Lawler before, but I enjoyed this one! I expected it to be a little like The Nurse by J A Corrigan, which I loved! This had some of the same elements, and had lots of drama later in the book, but was a little muted at the start. The second half was great and I raced to the end. It's a very quick read, and could easily be read in one sitting!
2.5 Stars I'm going to link theliterateleperchaun's review because I don't think I could have said it better myself. But I will try.
The pacing is quite slow considering this is a mystery/psychological thriller. I wish there was more substance to the storyline and better build up. The real perpetrator is easily predicted early on. Also I didn't like how everything happened in the last 5%-10% of the book. I wouldn't mind having a few more secrets and twists revealed along the way instead of being bombarded at the end.
***I would like to thank NetGalley, Liz Lawler (the author), and Bookouture (Publisher) for graciously sending me an ARC to review. As always, all thoughts are my own.*** *Audiobook from NetGalley*
Sarah is a well qualified nurse and is beside herself when she can’t reach her husband on the phone, so she calls the police to check on him. She is shocked and devastated to learn that the police have found her husband William dead. Of course Sarah becomes a suspect, and the investigating officer jumps in quickly to prove her innocence while trying to find the killer. His name is Nick and he is Sarah’s ex. He doesn’t let on that he was formerly involved with Sarah because the conflict of interest would get him removed from the case.
Nick is not he only one holding secrets in this story. Sarah has a secret as well. She is definitely hiding something. As Sarah‘s home is now a crime scene, she has nowhere to go. Fortunately, coworker and fellow nurse Kathleen opens her home to Sarah. Unfortunately, Sarah is more than uncomfortable with Kathleen’s escalating creepy behavior. This takes this murder mystery into an additional interesting direction.
Everyone is hiding something in this exciting latest book by Liz Lawler. While the secrets are becoming exposed one by one, there is a huge twist as the story begins to draw to a close. I loved The Nurse’s Secret as it was an intriguing and compelling read.
Many thanks to Bookouture and to NetGalley for this ARC for review. This is my honest opinion.
This is a very slow book with unlikeable characters. This had such an interesting premise that I was excited to read it, plus I’ve loved this author’s work in the past. However, once past the first couple of chapters, the story settles down into mediocrity. It just plods along with the investigation into William’s death but doesn’t seem to get anywhere. Nor does it feel like the police are asking the right questions or being very proactive. Nick’s storyline was tough to follow initially; he’s been away and returned, but no one seems to know anything about his life. Not his friends, work colleagues or the person that has known him since he was a little boy. Then his actions towards the end are just bizarre; he just runs off stage away from his boss and his problems. It was very amateur and childish for someone in his position. Charlie is another strange character. It is written like he is 70 and near to retiring. However, we find out he is only in his 50s, and this alone is shocking. Sarah seems like a straightforward character, but she is so dull. Nothing about her makes me interested in anything she does or says. As she is the main female protagonist, this made the book very hard to read. There are many over-the-top police procedural explanations, and I found that all overwhelming and hard to follow. The ending was predictable, and I’d guessed who the killer was and why very early on; Sarah’s past was the only interesting thing that held the story together. However, even that was overcomplicated. I felt very dissatisfied at the end; I didn’t feel as if I got all the answers or even really understood everything that was going on. Whereas at the same time, it really felt like the ending dragged on, and I just wanted to be done with the book. Not a good read for me, I’m afraid, which is such a shame as I have enjoyed all previous books by this author.
With thrillers, there’s a tendency to try to provide more twists and turns to keep people guessing and while, when well done, they’re entertaining, when you give too many characters, and too many threads to follow, it bogs the story down and makes it difficult to get through. Such is the case with this story. Most of the book is spent following several different people and just moves so slowly that I lost track and didn’t even care that I did. The ending was somewhat predictable and while I knew who the killer was, I didn’t know why. But again, it was just too slow for me to want to know why. I almost gave up several times but kept going just to see if I was right.
I received a copy from #NetGalley and #BookoutureAudio for an honest review.
Wow! This was a journey. We have several main characters that are easy to get to know and the fun is trying to figure out how the stories connect. It kept me guessing!
Sarah is a newlywed nurse. Her husband has been getting nasty calls and letters so when he continues to not answer her calls from work, she is concerned enough to call for a welfare check. Unfortunately, her groom is dead. This happens at the very start which I loved. We jumped right into it. It started to lag a little bit after, as we got to know more people, but not for long.
A friend from work, Kathleen, insists Sarah stay with her and her husband. Is she a helper or a stage five clinger? We also get to know Nick, a cop investigating the case. He’s actually Sarah’s ex who is still lovestruck. He pretends he doesn’t know her so he can stay on the case. Is he here to help or is it a setup?
There are reasons to, and not to, trust all of these people. This is a large web and everyone is hiding something.
It stays consistently interesting with a great twist that the story was carefully building toward the whole time. There were a few changes in narrators that got momentarily confusing but nothing that made it difficult to follow. It’s probably better labeled in the book. I got the audio and the narration was A+.
Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the chance to read and review. It’s available on Halloween!
Sarah Shaw is a nurse and has been married to William for four months but while on duty she’s tried contacting him but he isn’t answering the phone. She’s worried as he’s recently received anonymous letters and rings the police who call at their house and find him dead in bed from a gunshot wound. ‘The Nurse’s Secret’ tells of a newly married couple and the secrets that are kept hidden. The story is told through the eyes of Sarah, DI Nick Anderson who was previously in a relationship with Sarah, and Sergeant Charlie Bowden of the Major Crime Investigation Team.
This was a really slow story with lots of characters. It wasn’t as good as I hoped and it was over halfway before things get really interesting. Such a shame. My thanks to Netgalley and the publishers for giving me the opportunity to read this book in return for an honest review.
The Nurse's Secret by Liz Lawler is a story packed full of secrets and lies! Whilst a psychological thriller, I loved the police side of things as Charlie and Nick are both strong characters of which I became as invested in them as I did with Sarah, the protagonist. There is so much to love about this story as at times it is quite creepy with a sense of danger with every page turned. The perfect read at this scary time of year!
This is the story of Sarah, a nurse, who married William not too long ago. But now William is shot in the mouth and found in their home. We learn that he had been receiving anonymous calls and letters.
DS Charlie Bowden Charlie a veteran police sergeant starts to investigate. He is supported by DI Nick Anderson, who returns after he went off to London a year ago.. Now he is back and heading up the investigation into William's murder or suicide. Another nurse, Kathleen takes in Sarah to help her, but Sarah doesn't seem like a typical grieving widow... Especially when we find out under which circumstances Sarah and William got to know each other!!!
The story is twisted and takes lots and lots of turns, just how I love it! Once again I really enjoyed the narration of Sarah Durham!!!
Thank you #NetGAlley #Bookouture Audio for this Audiobook
Sarah has recently married William; she is a respected nurse and William Shaw is dead, shot in the mouth and found in their home. He had been receiving anonymous calls and letters. The police speak to Sarah and send DS Charlie Bowden Charlie a veteran police sergeant who is pleased to see the return of DI Nick Anderson after he fled to London a year ago without so much as a by-your-leave. Now he is back and heading up the investigation into William's apparent murder. Another nurse, Kathleen takes in Sarah to help her, but Sarah doesn't seem like a typical grieving widow...
The story unfolds after the attention-grabbing prologue which immediately set my cogs whirring. A great read with an unpredictable ending.
I received a complimentary copy of this novel from Bookouture via NetGalley at my request and this review is my own unbiased opinion.
This book has you running around wondering who...great police procedural book. . Death, suicide, let loves, new loves, memories of those lost, how we grieve.. has it all!!
Thanks to the author, the publisher and NetGalley for an early release of this book
I enjoyed reading The Nurse’s Secret. At the very beginning of the book, we are instantly drawn in when Sarah, a nurse, can’t get hold of her husband. Shortly afterwards she learns that he has been found dead in their home. This leads to a murder investigation with many secrets coming to light. I had guessed who the murderer was but that did not detract from my enjoyment of the book.
It is the first book I have read by Liz Lawler and I really liked it, it was well written and I will look out for more from her.
Thank you Netgalley for the audio copy in exchange for a honest review. Nurse Sarah Shaw is at work when her husband William is murdered. Sarah goes to stay with a work colleague Kathleen. DI Nick Anderson is on the investigating team. It soon becomes clear everyone involved has secrets. A well written thriller with twists and turns.
This book has 3 different POV’s, 2 of them being the detectives. There are a lot of characters and it’s kind of hard to keep up with who is who. It was very slow, and I had a really difficult time finishing it.
You know that one meme of Charlie Day in front of all the papers with lines drawn and trying to figure something out? That's how I felt through the first 90% of this one. I'm technology impaired and can't figure out how to post a meme here 😂
Even though I was confused for a bit, once everything started clicking for me I did really enjoy this one. I only have one of Liz's left to read and I'm honestly a little sad about it.
What the floofy flowers?! I mean... what?! For the love of peace and chocolate! I mean... I can't.. whoa! Lawler's few novels that I've read have always hit it out of the park for me and this one was no different. An absolute cluster-fluffer of a humdinger thriller that's guaranteed to leave your jaw on the floor. A perfect entrapment of unbelievable twists, secrets, & cunning, devious tangled connections. While I did have an inkling to the "whodunnit", the reason and past was such a shock and so unforeseen for me it completely made up for it. I savoured this like the last piece of delish chocolate cake with a filling of soft coconut cream (that is no longer in my fridge). I gobbled this up, the different perspectives, characters, story's & mystery of the police procedure. It was truly satisfying and an ending that worked so well. Keep hydrated & plenty of snacks on hand for this one folks!
Mყ 𝐒ყɴ𝐨ρѕιѕ: Sarah is a head nurse and recently been married to William. But that all changes one night when a police officer shows up during her shift to announce her husband has been found dead in their home. Of course the initial suspect is always the spouse, and Sarah is no exception. But Sarah can't prove her innocence because if she does, her past will come out and that's even more unthinkable than being considered a murderer.
Thank you to NetGalley & Bookouture for this ARC. Release Date: October 31, 2022
The Nurse’s Secret tells the story of Sarah Shaw, a nurse whose husband is murdered while she is working one night. There are many characters in this book who all have their own story and at times it was a little tedious. The story was very slow but at 90% complete there was bombshells and secrets galore! I would have preferred to get a few of the secrets and twists through out the book rather than all at once. The story was interesting and unique though. Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC in exchange for my honest review.
Read and reviewed via NetGalley for Bookouture publishers and Bookouture anonymous

This is the second book that I have read by this author. I have also read 'The Next Wife' which I would also highly recommend.
I was originally drawn to this book by its eye catching cover and intriguing synopsis. I am also a huge fan of Liz Lawler and if this book is half as good as 'The Next Wife' it is guaranteed to be a page turner. The synopsis stated that this book is 'An addictive psychological thriller that will have you glued to the pages until the final shocking twist. Perfect for fans of K.L. Slater, Shari Lapena and Clare Mackintosh.' I am a massive fan of K.L Slater and Shari Lapena so am looking forward to see if it lives up to this statement. I must admit I was also biased due to the publisher being Bookouture. I have yet to read a book published by Bookouture that I haven't enjoyed. Hopefully this won't be the first... Watch this space! (Written before I started reading the book).
This novel consists of a prologue and 66 chapters. The chapters are short to medium in length so possible to read 'just one more chapter' before bed...OK, I know yeah right, but still just in case!
This book is based in Bath, England , UK 🇬🇧 . I always enjoy when books are set in the UK as I'm from Wales and have sometimes visited areas mentioned in the book. This makes it easier to picture the scenes. I have, in fact, visited Bath so am hoping to be able to set the scenes smoother in my head.
This book is written in third person perspective and the main protagonists are Sarah Shaw, Nick and Charlie. The benefits of books written in third person with several protagonists are that it let's you see the bigger picture of what's going on and you get to know more characters more, what they are thinking and what they are doing. It feels like you get to see the whole picture and not miss out in anything.
This book is extremely well written and the fantastic descriptions definitely add to the dark atmosphere. The synopsis and the cover worked very well with the plot. I am most definitely looking forward to reading more books by this very talented author.
The storyline is extremely compelling and addictive as well as very dark. It was a slow burner but starts picking up later on in the book. It is character driven and has a fantastic mix of medical and police procedurals. It is filled with secrets, tension and a fantastic twist that the book builds up to. The fact that Liz has done her research so a huge WELL DONE to Liz as its a huge disappointment when authors don't do any or enough research into their subject and the book is then littered with unnecessary mistakes. I enjoyed that we get to see the perspectives from three characters with two being detectives and one a nurse. It is an intriguing and compelling read that will keep you guessing throughout.
This is only the third book that I have listened 100% on Audiobook. If I listen to a book on audiobook I usually also read the physical book between but for the third time I listened to the whole book and I was impressed! I must say a HUGE congratulations to the narrator Sarah Durham who did a great job bringing this story to life. I would listen to it in the car and while walking at any opportunity and Amalia did a fantastic job on both male and female characters voices!!! I'm not only looking forward to reading more books by Liz but also to listening to more books narrated by Sarah!
The characters all played their roles very well. Each of the characters seem to have their own hidden secrets that I was intrigued to discover. I was never sure who I should or shouldn't trust throughout. I had mixed feelings on the characters but whether I liked them or not they all work perfectly together to make this such a page turning read.
Make sure you read to the very end of the book to read an excerpt of Liz's absolutely gripping 'The Next Wife' which is another addictive page turner and one I have read myself and would highly recommend!!
Overall an intriguing and page turning medical and police thriller.
Genres covered in this novel include Mystery, Suspense, Thriller, Psychological Fiction, Drama, Medical Thriller, Police Procedural, Women's Crime Fiction and Psychological Thriller amongst others.
I would recommend this book to the fans of the above as well as fans of K.L. Slater, Shari Lapena and Clare Mackintosh.
368 pages/11 hours 7 minutes.
This book is £1.99 to purchase on kindle, free on kindle unlimited, £20.03 on audiobook and £9.99 in paperback at time of review via Amazon which I think is an absolute bargain for this book!!!
Rated 4/5 (I enjoyed it ) on Goodreads, Instagram, Amazon UK and Amazon US and on over 30 Facebook pages plus my blog on Facebook.
Feel free to add me on Goodreads or follow me on my website or Facebook for more reviews
Sarah may be thirty-something years of age, but like a cat, she has lived multiple lives. Today she is a new wife and a beloved and well-experienced nurse. Unfortunately, her bad luck strikes again, and her husband William is found dead at their home. The main detective in charge of William's case is Sarah's ex-lover. On top of this, her fellow nurse assumes the role of a mother hen, and Sarah finds herself in an awkward situation.
Revenge is a word that comes to my mind when I think of this novel. The main job of the nurse is to provide comfort and support to the patient. But our nurse leaves multiple dead bodies behind her. The plot of "The Nurse's Secret" is a combination of multiple secrets that are revealed throughout the novel. I must admit, the storyline was too busy for my liking. Too many characters with their own agenda and backstories. I did like the finale of the novel, not the typical happy-ending, but a very optimistic one. Makes me wonder if there will be a sequel to this book.
Thank you, NetGalley for a free and advanced copy of the novel in exchange for my honest review.
I really enjoyed this psychological thriller, which is fast paced and exciting.
Sarah is a nurse and her husband has recently been murdered. Nick is a police detective who used to go out with Sarah, and he is now looking into Sarah's husband's murder. Nick has a police partner called Charlie, who he is close to. All three of them are the main characters in the story, and I thought they were all interesting characters, who I liked. At Sarah's work, she has a friend called Kathleen, who tries to help her after the murder. But is Kathleen all she seems? Who has murdered Sarah's husband? Could Sarah have done it?
I really liked all the medical and police aspects of the story, and it reminded me a bit of the books by Angela Marsons, which I love. The story kept me engrossed, and eager to read on to find out who the murderer was. At the end, I was quite shocked by the big reveal, and I found it thrilling and exciting.
The audiobook narrator was fantastic.
I look forward to reading more books by this author. Highly recommended!
Many thanks to the author, narrator, publisher and NetGalley for a copy of this book.
First book by this author for me but I certainly wasn't disappointed. Although a little slow to get going, some fabulous twists and an ending I didn't see coming.
Sarah is a nurse and has recently married William, a school teacher. During her shift, police deliver the devastating news he has been found dead in their home, predicted as murder. Whilst Sarah goes to stay with her work colleague and her husband, the senior investigating officer Josh, appears....and whilst neither divulge their past, have been in a relationship together.
William had previously been married to Mary, who had MS and died in the hospital in which Sarah works. However questions begin to arise around her death, originally thought to have been natural, but now raises queries.
A brilliant book with intertwined relationships, secrets from the past, lies in the present and s potential murderer still on the loose.
While Sarah is working one night, she gets the call that no one ever wants to get. Her husband has been found dead. One of the detectives that is assigned to the case used to be Sarah’s boyfriend, however, neither Sarah or nick tells anyone this fact. When one of her fellow nurses, Kathleen, learns of what Sarah is going through, she takes her in and tries to protect her and becomes obsessed with her and puts Sarah in an awkward position. There are several POV’s and police procedures to keep up with and at times it felt a bit like trudging through until you get til about 80-85% and then all the twist and bombshells kept coming. I wish they had been spread out more through the book. The narration was well done and did keep me interested throughout. Thanks to Bookouture and NetGalley for this audiobook arc in exchange for my review.
Told from several different POV, The Nurse's Secret is a cleverly plotted psychological thriller/police procedural. It's a slow starter that soon picks up pace. Definitely very compelling and full of twists and turns that had me on high alert throughout incase I missed anything.
Sarah was definitely an interesting character wasn't she, not only was she a liar, she wasn't very nice either and I took an instant dislike to her, but needed to know what the extent of her secrets and lies were.
Overall, it's an entertaining, engaging one sitting read and I thoroughly enjoyed it.
Ah finale deludente...
The Nurse's Secret by Liz Lawler Narrated by: Sarah Durham and Length: 11 hrs and 7 mins was an enjoyable audiobook I was gripped from the beginning till the end and was a great book to listen to whilst doing your favourite hobby - Crocheting. This was a psychological thriller, which is fast paced with great twists and I found it hard to turn it off. Liz's books are always a great read and this one was no different I loved it especially all the characters were brilliant.
