3.5 ⭐️. This is my first time reading this author, and this was a decent standalone with an actually sweet MMC and a guarded but fierce FMC. I love Beauty and the Beast retellings, and I’m a bit burnt out on harsh, cold, indifferent, cruel MMCs who eventually turn it around, so this was a nice change of pace.
This world is pretty dark. This is the world of evil, callous, cruel fae with no regard for life or compassion for others. Rina was a forced concubine since age 15 when she was taken from the human realm (gross, I know) and her life has been nothing but a series of calculated decisions, tight rope balancing, and masking emotions to survive the horrors of Prince Maxen’s court. She is left at Hayth’s manor to seduce him and uncover the secret to his immortality, or face a fate worse than death at the hands of Maxen.
Rina was an interesting FMC. Where I thought she’d be more timid, broken, and shy, trying to disappear in every room to avoid the fae’s cruel attentions, she was actually a bit bold and sarcastic. I didn’t actually love her all that much in the beginning, as I couldn’t quite get a read on her motivations. But as she settled a bit into her new circumstances at the manor, realized the “Beast” Hayth wasn’t who she thought, we actually got to see the real her… soft, compassionate, insecure. I liked her so much better as her story progressed.
Hayth was a true golden retriever MMC. Sweet from the beginning, if a little stoic and closed off to her, but nonetheless honorable, safe, and protective. I liked his character immensely, and the mystery around his connection to Rina was intriguing.
Their connection was where it fell a bit flat for me. While time does pass at the manor and we’re told they’re working side by side getting to know each other, we don’t SEE that much of it. So it feels like we go from suspicion and emotional walls to confessing truths and being in love. Like in one scene almost. Then things were so over the top for their relationship it was almost too much, feeling disingenuous. I wanted more of them actually falling in love. The pacing was a tad slow in the middle as well, while we’re just at the manor, and you know a big conflict is coming when Maxen comes to collect his info, but until then it’s just sort of waiting.
I appreciate the author didn’t drag out the miscommunication between MCs, as I hate that trope. The final conflict was intense and I couldn’t stop reading. Over all this was a good retelling, and hard to put down. I just wish we had more connection between Rina and Hayth, and more emotion from the characters so their story felt more authentic.
