The room was full of God's presence...a feeling of God's nearness impossible to describe. The whole audience began to pray. ...It was not many, but one, born of one Spirit, lifted to one Father above. ...God came to us in Pyeng Yang that night. ...Man after man would arise, confess his sin, break down and weep. Some threw themselves full length on the floor; hundreds stood with arms outstretched towards heaven. Every man forgot each other. Each was face to face with God.Everywhere the story was told the same Spirit flowed forth and spread. All through the city men were going from house to house, confessing to individuals they had injured, returning stolen property and money. The whole city was stirred."This account of the 1907, Pyeng Yang revival in Korea, is not an anomaly. Not even close. Such revivals of prayer and Spirit are our history and heritage and they continue to pulse us forward in the fulfillment of the Great Commission, even today. These revivals have brought entire cities to their knees and as they have swept across the universities they have left up to half the student body converted in their wake. This book is about such prayer, and such revivals, and preparing ourselves for another mighty movement of God's a movement I believe we can, and will see, if we will meet God's criteria for revival and awakening." - Dan Hayes
An encouraging read! However, it was relatively repetitive and somewhat of a circular argument. The stories used as examples were often given without full context and I would have preferred if his argument was equally rooted in scripture. My favourite parts were the personal application points which I felt were written in an uplifting, honest and helpful manner. Overall, a fortifying book which has some valuable points despite being a little slow to read at times.
I read this book for cru and it was pretty good. I don’t think I really put too much thought into the concept of revival until reading this book, I was always a little wary of them, it just felt like Passion or FM72 and runs the risk of big spectacle and limited lasting heart change. My growth in faith has been centered on discipline as far diligence in reading the Bible, and discipleship, and church membership, and growing in biblical literacy, and I’m a little more traditional myself, so big outpourings of the spirit feel a little scary and different from the spiritual growth I have experienced thus far. I liked the last chapter that clarified that revivals are like Christmas rather than the norm which helped me contextualize how revivals fit into spiritual life. Anyways, I loved the historic nature of the book, and how it outlines so many wonderful Christian movements that I had never even heard of experiencing God in such powerful ways. It’s crazy how people prayed with such diligence and just the outpouring of people coming together to praise the lord and the capacity this group had for reaching and serving their communities. It was definitely super convicting, I’m bad at extended prayers so I definitely need to work on that. I kinda trudged though the book at times (but I don’t really enjoy nonfiction reading) but really cool subject matter! 7.5/10
Really liked the advice it gave on how to be living my life and the things which I should be convicted about. I also liked how they said at the end that walking in faith is a process, not one event. My one critique is that they did focus on revival as an event quite a lot, and not really what we do with newly converted believers and discipling them.
This book never fails to ignite the prayers of college students- I read it with two different groups of students this year and both groups became devoted to prayer.
Over 25 years ago, I read this book in college and I recall the passion for revival it stirred. Since then, I've read it several times and find my heart rekindled to believe God for radical revival.
Get this powerful book into the hands of college students.
I completely lost this book. I think I left it on a coffee table in Charleston. That’s the last place I remember having it. It was off to a great start too😭
This is a fine book on the subject of revival. Short and an easy read, but not lacking in conviction and a push for change that is still relevant to readers of all ages (but especially for college students). The book is filled with example after example of real world examples of revival and the results of a fervent prayer life. It has personally given me a renewed desire to pray in my own life. The one caveat that I had with the book is that it is a strong supporter of the ecumenical movement, and is directly related to Campus Crusade for Christ. Other than those notes, the book is biblically sound and I recommend.
Our lives, our campuses, our world need revival. This book is a great motivation to draw near to God in prayer for revival. I look forward to reading this with students this spring and hope this is the book that shapes 2018.
So many great questions, and helpful suggestions of how to pause and put things into action. Convicting on my own prayer life. So motivated, and desiring to pray - for myself, for our family, for our workplaces, for our city! Revival - Come, Lord Jesus, come.
A book on revival, which by necessity makes it a great resource on prayer repentance. Dan Hayes will enlarge your view of God and provide an abundance of historical evidence to trust for revival to come again.
I thought this book was really helpful on looking at spiritual revivals in the past and the integral components to have a successful revival. It was also very heart stirring in wanting to see revival on my campus.
It’s got some great prayer stories in there. It’s a shot in the arm to pray more. Written in an inspiring and challenging way. Outlines historical revivals and the influence of prayer and obedience on them.
4.5 stars! Excellent book and really well written. Full of inspiring stories of God on the move and of calls to action. Because of this book, I'm truly burdened for those who don't yet know Christ.
This is a great book that shares some amazing revivals that have happened and tells of the one, two or more people that started those revivals. This is a must read for collage students or pastors/missionaries who work with collage students, especially if they have a heart for the lost and what to make a difference on their campus and perhaps spark a new revival. Worth buying and sharing with others.
This book is a classic manual on revivals and prayer. It gives numerous examples of revivals from the 1700s and documents how they started and how men and women were moved by the Holy Spirit to pray and act. Very well written and one that needs to be read more than once.
Loved this book on revival and the role of college students and young adults in many past revivals. It changed the way I think about the topic and the way I pray for God to move on our campus.
