Wells Ranch #2

Seeing Red

Rate this book
In this spicy romance from the author of Alive and Wells and Change of Hart, a small-town sweetheart finds herself unexpectedly pregnant after a one-night stand binds her to a local cowboy who has had a crush on her for years.

She lives by the rules. He lives to break them.

Cassidy Bowman has strict rules to uphold her good-girl reputation: she doesn’t date the Wells Ranch locals, and she definitely doesn’t sleep with men she isn’t dating. But after a run-in with her ex-boyfriend—and a few too many drinks—she’s ready to buck those rules and allow herself one night of recklessness.

On the other hand, local cowboy Chase “Red” Thompson has never met a rule he didn’t love breaking. With a long-time crush on Cassidy, he’s more than willing to accept her offer of a one-night stand and her one condition: he must agree to never speak of it again.

That is until two pink lines render Cassidy’s entire rule book null and void. Cassidy isn’t looking for a relationship with the rough-and-tumble cowboy, and Red doesn’t need anyone to tell him he’s not good enough for the sweetheart of Wells Canyon.

So the two make another agreement—they’ll be friends and co-parents, nothing more. But as their carefully constructed boundaries begin to blur, Cassidy might just realize that perhaps some rules are worth breaking.

Bailey Hannah is a Canadian romance author.

She loves to write strong heroines and rugged men who aren’t afraid to love their woman hard.

Born and raised in small town British Columbia, she loves to add rural Canadian flair (dirt roads, rodeos, ketchup chips, and a two-four) to her stories.

She lives with her husband, daughter, two dogs, and chickens. A chronic middle-of-the-night writer, during the day Bailey can be found camping, baking sourdough, or being her daughter’s chauffeur to horseback riding lessons.

It took me approximately 6 hours to finish this book, and that’s only because I had to get off my ass and fulfill my duties as a wife and mother— like feeding my family and shit.

I mean, who has time for that when you’re reading about a sexy af, tattooed cowboy with a breeding kink whose love language is cooking you 12 different types of potatoes and giving you multiple orgasms??

I made it known to Bailey after Alive and Wells that she better add a TW to the rest of the series. Because I was ready to sue her for child support if I got pregnant due to the spice that was clearly spicin’ in these books. Now I have it in writing that she’s not responsible 🙄

Unfortunately for me, it still didn’t help the fact that Red basically fertilized my eggs without even touching me. So there’s that. PS- that’s still all her fault bc she wrote the damn man.

I’m not surprised in the slightest that I loved this book as much as I did. Because I knew I would. And I may be in the minority of readers here, but I love me a good accidental pregnancy. I’m the product of one myself, so I tend to enjoy reading it when it’s written really well.

And this book? Exceptionally well written. Fanfuckingtastic. Chef’s kiss 👩🏼‍🍳💋

So if you love childhood friends to lovers, one night stands that turn into cute babies and found families, as well as hand necklaces and filthy mouthed cowboys? Just go ahead and at it to your TBR.

*Knocking it down yet again - we're now at a 1/5 - because Bailey Hannah insists on acting like a garbage human being on social media. I mean really, blatantly attacking people for any reason, but specifically because they didn't like one of your books, is beyond fucking childish. You should be embarrassed by your behaviour. Dell Romance should be embarrassed by your behaviour. Such a terrible example of how a "professional" author should behave.

Since initially writing this, I’ve knocked my rating down a star because the author has been acting very inappropriately on social media. Trolling people who disliked your book is disgusting behaviour and you should be ashamed of yourself. Do better.

Spice: 2/5
Plot: 3/5

MINOR SPOILERS! Fair warning.

Ok. Lemme just preface all of this by saying that I loved Bailey’s debut book, A LOT. She is an incredible indie author and her writing is amazing! She can write the perfect cowboy every fucking time and she writes them REAL, which is a breath of fresh air! Red for me was incredible and that man deserved so much better than what he got.

*takes a deep breath* now…

This book started off strong AF. I was here for it. It comes out swinging and the spice was like WHAM. But then somewhere along the way it shifted and it was like watching a slow motion car accident where you can’t look away even though you really want to…

Ok firstly… Everyone is going to automatically assume that I have an issue with the pregnancy trope, I don’t. That’s not even remotely my issue, I actually love a well done oops. My first issue is Cassidy fucking Bowman. Who the fucking hell do you think you are?! There might not be anything that pisses me off quite as much as a woman who makes a good man question his worth. And for everyone who’s like “oh go easy on her she was pregnant!” She was a raging bitch to him before she was even pregnant so pregnancy hormones aren’t a justifiable excuse here. Red treated her like fucking gold and she was nothing but a stunned thundercunt. Someone needs to backhand that twat asap. Yea, I said what I said.

Second, her dad… what a piece of shit. She should’ve put him in his place way fucking sooner and he shouldn’t have even treated her like that in the first place. This whole thing was cringey.

Third, what the actual fuck is with the baby size references?! 32 weeks, baby is the size of a box of donuts. WHAT?! Oh but wait it gets worse, then we get a bucket of chicken. This has gotta be satire cuz if not, it’s the dumbest thing I’ve ever read.

Lastly… We need to address the giant spouting whale in the room *insert the sound of a cat retching up a hairball* Now don’t get me wrong, I love a good squirting (gags about that word) scene as much as the next girl but this was waaaay over the top. I mean, maybe I’m completely ignorant here but is it even physically possible for a girl to do that every single time?! EVERY. SINGLE. TIME. If you’re one of these magical squirting every time unicorn women, can you please message me, cuz I need to talk logistics. Like how does that actually work… And do you need to have a mattress protector on the bed at all times? Do you have just a never ending supply of sheets? How do you afford the water bill for all of the laundry? Do you have a specific type of cleaner that you recommend for getting all of this out of the furniture? Have you considered buying shares in puppy piss pads?

And it wouldn’t have been so bad if Bailey wasn’t such a descriptive writer. But I mean things like, “I lick in rapid, tight circles until she’s flooding my face with her cum.” Ok that’s fine, flooding is questionable but I can deal with it. She should’ve ended it there but it goes on… “The most spectacular waterfall I’ve had the pleasure of bathing in.” I’m sorry, WHAT?!? *the cat is retching again* Who wants to read about a dude bathing in a chicks waterfall of cum?! HARD PASS. Hard fucking pass. Then we toss in little lines like, “the meaty flesh of her hips.” NOPE. Oh and her “sore boobs.” also NO. What are we twelve? I could keep going but I think you get my point lol.

Sigh. Alright I’m done. Honestly the only saving grace to this book was Red. If it weren’t for him I would’ve DNF’d this. As it was, I still skipped all of the spicy shit after a certain point because I like keeping the contents of my stomach inside my body while I’m reading. I’m still looking forward to the third book in the series though! And I’ll definitely keep recommending Alive and Wells soooo that’s something lol.

If you loved this book you probably don’t want to read this review. Fair warning.

If it weren’t for doing a buddy read and for Red, I would’ve DNF’d, but I powered through a rage read and now have a fully formed opinion. And it’s not great. I still gave it 3 stars because Red and the Wells Ranch family deserved that recognition. *after seeing the authors behavior on social media, I dropped a star.

Let me first say it’s not because of the pregnancy trope. Is it my fav? No, but I’ve read some good ones so I know it can be done. Also let me say that I am a woman who has been pregnant twice, delivered two babies, one of which resulted in a 54 day NICU stay. So I’ve got some firsthand experience. And I know not everyone’s pregnancies are the same, but hormones are NOT an excuse to be a terrible person.

Which brings us to Cassidy Bowman (who was a bitch to Red BEFORE pregnancy, just saying). She didn’t think it was important to tell Red herself that she was pregnant, instead letting small town rumors fly. And when he does confront her about it her response is:

“I’m not a complete thundercunt, so I’ll let you buy shit for the baby, if you seriously want to be involved. That’s it.” Uhhh, sorry hunny but that DOES make you a thundercunt (authors word, not mine).

Then two seconds later she’s telling Red she already went to the doctor (that he had every right to go) and she guesses he can have the 2nd ultrasound picture that she was planning to give to her dad. Then seemed annoyed when he accepted it. Just beyond rude.

And speaking of her father, Dave… anyone who advocates for only one parent to be involved in a child’s life is a garbage human being. He is so judgmental of Red due to Red’s fathers past actions, which makes absolutely NO sense because when Red rightly points out that his logic means Cassidy will be a terrible mother, he’s quick to say no. You’re not a smart person, Dave.

Now there was some good stuff in the middle, but just when I thought Cassidy was going to change and be a better person she ends up cutting off all communication with Red after a fight and proceeds to exclude him from doctors appointments and does the nursery with her asshole father. Red clearly was hurt by this and her saying a simple sorry was not good enough. Because that whole month apart Red was busy working on a space just for her to have when the baby arrives. What a perfect example of the difference between a good person and a not good person.

SHE wasn’t good enough for HIM. Red was a good man who didn’t deserve to have his self esteem shit on even more.

I will not be continuing this series. And that’s ok, not every book is for everyone.

4.5 ⭐️ I absolutely love this! I was in the mood for a small town/ cowboy romance and this delivered!

If you loved Reckless by Elsie Silver, you will devour this one!!

“I might not be good enough for her, but she’s perfectly made for me.”

Red - Chase Thompson is legit perfect. The immediate “I am a dad” as soon as he finds out he’s about to be a daddy is my absolute favorite and I will devour it every time. He legit does no wrong and loves Cass so hard.

Cass was a feisty thing but I loved her attitude towards Red - even though she was mean at times. Red gave it right back. I can’t wait until book 3 because Bailey Hannah’s writing is so so good! I was hooked from the start. And the spice.. 😮‍💨

“I know we’re playing with fire. But, fuck, we burn so good”

For my side contemp-romance I've picked this because someone on IG compared the MMC to my one and only love Theo Silva and I needed to personally check if the comparison is legit.

It's not, but the book was a little cute, nonetheless.

˗ˏˋ 2 ★ ˎˊ˗ (and every mf one is for chase “red” thompson)

this book was aptly named bc i truly was seeing red up until the very last page. if it had been intentional, i would have given props to the author for subverting the cowboy romance/surprise baby genre by instead writing about the perils of unresolved trauma in an abuse survivor. not to mention for crafting the most genuinely insufferable, unlikable fmc i have ever had the displeasure of being stuck inside the head of —— but this was intended to be a romance, and cassidy was intended to be likable (i actually checked the author’s insta to be sure) so whomp whomp. if cassidy has no haters, i am not only dead —— my spirit has been banished entirely from this plane of existence because i would disturb my eternal rest just to haunt her in this narrative. they could never make me like you, cassidy. absolutely never.

“cass, i mean this with all the respect and love in the world —— shut the fuck up,” said her best friend. me? i meant it with vitriol and scorn every time her dialogue was on page.

like i get it, right? this book was basically just supposed to be devotion / acts of service / being taken care of porn. that’s fine. we love a man who would walk through fire for his love, who is soft and doting but only for her. but having that energy come from red, an abuse survivor who had internalized a sense of worthlessness and had accepted the notion that love would always be conditional based on how he well he managed someone’s happiness, was so beyond fucked. particularly when the person he was devoting himself to exclusively perpetuated those insecurities until legitimately 75% of the way through the book, and he never even did anything out of line to her to warrant the groveling he put himself through in the third act.

SPOILERS BELOW ! reader beware —— you’re in for a scare

red deserved so much better than cassidy. he had a penchant for getting into drunken bar fights to defend her and had a bad reputation in their small town because of his (abusive) father. other than that, he treated her beyond compare. even after he had to seek her out to find out about his baby because she was too embarrassed to admit to anyone that he was the father. he poured himself into her just to prove he was worthy, and at every turn, she confirmed his fears that he was only good enough to be used and discarded. he preempted all of her needs, cooked and cleaned for her every night, bought her things to ease her pregnancy, drove her to her appointments, built her a workspace for the dream she was going to just give up on, and was used for sex. meanwhile, she wouldn’t even let him kiss her on the lips. she did absolutely not shit for him, not even once. didn’t even try to. as a matter of fact, it’s mentioned that every morning after he had sex with her, she told him it couldn’t happen again. for weeks, she cyclically used him for affection and sex, then reinforced that nothing he did for her was worthy of considering him long-term.

she did nothing to warrant any of his love. refused to admit he was the dad, took advantage of his generosity, excluded him from multiple aspects of the pregnancy, strung him along and ghosted him when he wanted to dtr, made him feel like he was similar to his father when he was truly nothing like the man. like . . . what did she do to earn his love? why did he love her? because she was the first and only person to begrudgingly show him a scrap of the affection he had been starved of his whole life. and that is just the most heartbreaking “””romance””” plot.

if at any point she respected him and treated him like he wasn’t an embarrassment, he would have found the fortitude to foster and externalize the more caring aspects of his personality she exclusively praised. but even after he immediately showed them to her, proved to her that he is a good man with unresolved trauma and anger issues from it, she made him feel like those trauma responses were all he was. then she demonized him for the way he behaved after she tore him down for months. after she showed him that she can’t handle his ugly and can’t love the unloveable parts of him, the ones he is most anxious about —— the ones he hates, too, and only needs someone to be tender with. I’M SICK!!!! I’M TAKING IT TOO PERSONALLY AND I’M ILL!!!!! even when they reconciled after he checks notes started a bar fight because someone insulted her and their baby, she gave him absolutely none of the reassurances he deserved. cassidy is my number one opp.

here are some real quotes from cassidy to/about red:
”i’m not a complete thundercunt, so i’ll let you buy shit for the baby, if you seriously want to be involved. that’s it.”
”his [her dad’s] disappointment is solely in me. don’t want him to think i’m a slut who’s running around sleeping with you . . . sorry, no offense.”
i think i’ve been falling in love with chase . . . but i’m not sure about red.
”and now with the hormones and him being around all the time . . . maybe those are the only reasons i like chase.” (mind you we are 68% through the book)
in spite of myself, i like him.
seeing everyone makes this real. makes us real. (80%)

and here are some real quotes from red about how cassidy makes him feel:
i’m still a fuckup kid from a fuckup family. a wave of ruin, liable to destroy the future she deserves. unworthy of someone so incredible, so bright, so beautiful.
”i’m the same piece of shit i’ve always been.”
”i don’t know if i’m cut out for this shit. being a dad. a boyfriend. the two things i want to be more than anything else in this fucking world, but i know i’m going to screw it up. [ . . . ] they deserve so much better than me.” (70%)
”i might not be good enough for you in a lot of ways . . . this isn’t one of them. i know i can fuck you better than anyone.” 1. he only ever shows up for her 2. because sex is the one thing she praises him for :•)
”let me pretend to be worthy of you tonight.”

your honor, it’s fuck cassidy forever, red and denny should have been the focal romance, and i rest my case.

So incredibly sad to gives this book ⭐️⭐️. I absolutely loved the first book and I saved the release date of this book in my calendar and added it to by shopping cart. I am so so disappointed and it’s all because of the FMC. She was a raging b#%\^ from the start, before she even got pregnant. She made the MMC question his own worth and put him down, disrespected him EVERY CHANCE SHE COULD!! And he was nothing but nice, thoughtful and sincere. I live for a strong, independent FMC but this was just plain brutal. Super sad about this. I DNF this book before the whole pregnancy thing, then came back for the reviews and I gave it another shot and pushed through, but nope! Honestly, Cassidy is just yuck.

All things I love! So why did I not love this?! The FMC absolutely RUINED this book! Cassidy, aka Cass, was just soooooooo mean! Don’t get me wrong, I love a good enemies to lovers book, but this wasn’t it. There was no reason for Cass to be so mean to Red. The MMC was so sweet and she was constantly a raging bitch to him for absolutely no reason. I hated her. She took all the joy out of this book.

DNF @ Ch 20. Personally for me I do not like a book where the FMC makes the MMC consistently prove his worth when its not warranted & imo Red was an angel baby and the way he was treated gave me the ick. Also the way Red was left out of a lot of the beginning of the pregnancy & found out about the baby via rumors was awful. Was not the book for me. I loved the first book too so super sad about this one.

I don’t know. I loved the first book. Genuinely was so good. I was super excited for this one. But the FMC… not it. She was a see you next Tuesday for like the whole book. Pregnancy or not. Red, though. He was a bit immature but he manned the f up and was so… caring, thoughtful, and deserved to know how much he was WORTH!!! The father of the fmc? Massive d!ck. And I didn’t like how the FMC hid he was the father for like almost half the book until she was forced to tell her father. I don’t know. It was one of those main characters you just force yourself to finish the book because you liked one of them but not the other…. You know? So bummed….

“My new favourite place on Earth is wherever Cassidy Bowman is.”

The author definitinely tried to use Theo Dale Silva as blueprint for writing Chase Red Thompson in her book but there's only one THEO DALE SILVA in fictional world. No one can be like him even if they try.

Seeing Red is definitely better than Alive and Wells. The story is better, the characters are well written and are so perfect for each other. I liked Chase and Cassidy's story, their romance was sweet and a bit angsty and served all the wholesome and spicy moments I needed and expected from them.

➸ Chase 'Red' Thompson is a cowboy famous for his manwhore-ish ways and short-tempered attitude. But Chase is so much more than what people think of him. Sure he is a bit too much and is ready to pick fights all the time but he is one of the most sweetest and thoughtful guys. He cares for the people he loves and the way this man cared for Cassidy after knowing about her situation was so freaking cute. I was melting everytime he brought her dinners, helped her with her work. He is the reason I loved and enjoyed reading this book this much.

“She loves me. I’m sure of it now. I never need to hear her say the words, as long as she keeps smiling at me like this for the rest of my life. That’s enough for me. It means enough.”

➸ Cassidy was a fun character to read about. At first she appeared to be a feisty ice queen but inside she's a woman who just wants to be understood and loved as who she is. She was insecured about her body and how people perceived her and her pregnancy only made it harder for her accept those changed but it was good to see Chase appreciating and encouraging her with his words and actions, telling her how much she means to him by showing up for her when she needed him.

“I know it’s hard for you to watch your body change, but on the days you hate it, I’m going to love it enough for the both of us.”

Chase and Cassidy complemented each other so well. I was sold on them from chapter one and they had both physical and emotional connection from the very start. Chase being the boy obsessed in their relationship was absolutely perfect. Their relationship evolved at a very slow pace because Cassidy was hell bent on keeping things normal between her and Chase by just being friends with benefits with no kissing rule. What I liked was how they understood each other so effortlessly and see the real person behind the fake façade they created for other people. They healed a part of each other's heart and soul and that was beautiful.

“I count the tiny apricot-hued freckles speckling the bridge of her nose, losing myself in how incredible it is to finally hold her.”

The epilogue was the cutest. I am so excited to read Blair and Denver's story now. Second chance romances are my kryptonite 😋

I’ll never be ashamed to say I love the pregnancy trope, there’s just something about it that always hits, and this book got it 🙂‍↕️.

Red was absolutely perfect in this. His acts of service? Top tier. He was so in love with her it hurt. He did so much for them, and I adore him for it.

Cassidy was such a sweet character. I loved how thoughtful she was, was it overthinking or just careful decision-making? Either way, I appreciated her being written with so much emotional depth, especially her fears about becoming a mom. You don’t see that enough in books.

And their baby having Red hair Cutest thing ever 😭💗

Overall, this was an adorable read, and I will forever be a sucker for the pregnancy trope.

Listen, I don’t know what Bailey Hannah puts in these books but I cannot stop reading them and I’ll be starting book three immediately.

First, we have to talk about Red, a.k.a. Chase. This man is the definition of rough on the outside, soft on the inside. No one’s really taken the time to understand everything he’s been through, but underneath it all, he’s basically a golden retriever in cowboy boots. The way he steps up the moment he learns Cassidy is pregnant, making sure she feels safe and loved, had me swooning. Sure, he struggles, but he’s such a genuinely good man. He’s a good man, Savannah! And let me just add, Chase is a man who loves to please in the bedroom 🥵🥵.

Cassidy is your quintessential good girl who’s spent her life trying not to disappoint her dad. I love that she takes a wild turn with a one night stand to make her ex jealous, and that one night changes everything. Ending up pregnant might just be the best thing that’s ever happened to her. At times, she could be a little frustrating with her self-doubt, but it made sense given everything she went through with her ex.

Watching Chase and Cassidy together wasn’t always easy. If they’d just opened up to each other more, they could have avoided a lot of their conflict. But honestly, that tension was part of what made the story so good. And the found family vibes from the Wells Ranch crew? Perfection.

Also… I have to mention this. He braids her hair after she’s had his baby because he knows it’s bothering her. If you can find me a Chase somewhere, please bring him to me immediately.

This one had some big shoes to fill because “Alive and Wells” is one of my favorite books ever. And I’m not surprised to say that “Seeing Red” did not disappoint.

This is one of the easiest five star ratings I have ever given out. This book had me so deep in my feels I swear I cried like 20 times. There was so much emotion behind these characters, especially Chase Red Thompson( my baby😮‍💨🤠)
He can put that Barbwire around my neck any day.

The dynamic, the banter, the flirting the SPICE OH MY GOD, literally couldn’t get any better. Cassidy and Red have easily become one of my favorite book couples. They just work so damn well together.

AND THE MOUTH ON RED🥵LAWDDDDD

I don’t know why “accidental pregnancy” always turns me off, but I’m a fucking fan!!!! I ate it up like my favorite 🥔s.

I can truly say an endless amount of good things about this book. But I’ll sum it up with….I’m obsessed

Bailey Hannah has now written two of my favorite books of all time.

¿Más de 7 escenas de spicy en menos de 400 paginas? Too much for me.

If you’re someone who hates the accidental pregnancy trope, stop right there & give this book a go! The accidental pregnancy in this was done exceptionally well.

Chase “Red” Thompson was everything you’d want in an mmc. The man knows the way to a woman’s heart with how many different ways he can cook potatoes🤷🏽‍♀️. On top of this he was so caring, funny & would go to the end of the earth for Cassidy even when she pushed him away.

I love that Chase has a bit of a rough background & we learned more about that as the story went on. He grew so much as a character throughout this book. The sweetest character ever!!!

Cassidy Bowman was headstrong, knowing exactly what she wanted. I liked the fact that she wasn’t a polished character but instead a chronic illness rep for Hashimoto’s disease & PCOS which I’m sure many women can relate to. She was also a curvier fmc which I loved to see. There were times where she would annoy me with how much she pushed Chase away despite him being the sweetest man ever.

I thought it was really sweet when Chase revealed parts about them growing up & giving us an “I’ve always seen you” kinda moment.

I feel like the timeline of this book flowed really well & I really enjoyed the baby size comparisons as someone who has used a pregnancy app before. Some of those comparison are wild!!

I loved that Cassidy was so easily accepted into the Wells Ranch gang & they made sure she had people there for her.

The end of the book was really sweet seeing them prepare for baby then the aftermath too.
It was nice to see book 3 getting set up in this book too. I’m excited for Blair & Denny.

Overall, I really enjoyed this book & preferred it to Alive and Wells.

Pero que belloooo! 🥹

“We cling to one another like Rose and Jack Dawson should’ve done on the floating door out at sea.” ✨

I don’t know how Bailey does it, but I'm addicted. She even made me fall in love with the accidental pregnancy trope—I devoured this gem in just 8 hours, only stopping to eat. 🔥

Chase, aka Red (MMC), is a damn dream, constantly proving he’s all in for Cassidy (FMC) and the baby, no matter what. Their journey through the pregnancy was so beautiful, and even though Red’s a little rough around the edges, Cassidy sees the good in him and helps him see it too. Both of them come with baggage, but together, they’re determined to break the cycle and not repeat their parents’ mistakes. This story was so freaking beautiful, I can’t. 😭

“I know it’s hard for you to watch your body change, but on the days you hate it, I’m going to love it enough for the both of us.”

Accidental pregnancy is one of my favorite tropes, so I came into Seeing Red with high hopes after loving Alive and Wells. And while Bailey Hannah still delivers on so many fronts. Namely with her signature emotional depth, small-town charm, and a truly satisfying ending. Overall though, this one didn’t land quite as fully for me.

Most of my struggles came from Cassidy’s arc. Red was such a standout. So loving, so patient, and there were times I found myself wishing he was given more from the people around him, especially considering how much he gave in return. I also had a hard time reconciling how someone embraced by the town’s most prominent family could still be treated like an outsider. That dynamic just didn’t fully click for me.

That said, the final act really pulled it together, and I loved where it landed emotionally. I have a strong feeling the next book might end up being my favorite in the series.

Cassidy y Red(Chase)❤️‍🔥❤️‍🔥

An attempt of the ‘She’s too good for him’ trope, where the FMC is actually the one completely undeserving of her love interest. He spent the entire book trying to prove himself, whilst she did NOTHING except excuse her shitty behaviour because she got knocked up by cowboy baby batter
