I first read this book in 2016, I was 15 years old, and I had a habit of devouring books as quickly as possible. If you had asked me for a rating back then, I'd give you a very beautiful 5 stars. This is 2022, I'm 21 years old. 6 years later this book gets 1 star from me.
I'm not saying it's a bad book, if you're 15 at heart and uninformed about the way the world works I guess it's fine for you to be offended at my review 🥴. But let's keep in mind that my reading tastes have evolved since I was 15 and between the time frame I'm sure I've read more than the books accounted for on my profile. First of all, I don't exactly understand the plot, what's the main issue in this book? What's the main area of focus? I don't know. It was quite bland for me really and truly. The character development, ẹjọ, kilosele? What's happening. Why would the protagonist of a story who is the model boy be behaving like a goat! Why is efua rude? There's no backstory as to why she's rude till the end of the book! A lot of things were happening without a reason for the occurrence of said "happening".
Nene is annoying,💀 very annoying with her kiss ass behaviour, you can't be too surprised she decided to do a whole Judas Iscariot on Efua.
Wole is just an unecessary being, and in what world does a single parent leave his two underaged children in his house to take care of themselves?!😭 Nigerian parents can be negligent, but that's too negligent. Wole was just there to be the bad guy in the corner, that's it.
And why was I reading about the description of mango tree, and high school children having parties, in this Nigeria? Ehennnn🥴.
It's giving white public school in Nigeria vibes 😭, and as a Nigerian, no Please no.
The important areas that were supposed to be touched were brushed over lightly, sexual assault, bullying, Gender identity crisis, loss of a loved one, low self esteem issues, child negligence, and drug abuse.
I still don't understand what I liked about this book then. Oh well
Please keep in mind that this is my perspective on the book MY PERSPECTIVE. If you chat me shit I'll deck you, and that's on God🙏🏾😂
A. H. Mohammed's The Last Days at Forcados High School is a novel for teenagers that emphasizes the essence of family and friendship. It presents the bittersweet experience of young Jimi Solade, who is in his final year in high school, his experience with his family and friends.
There is the roguish Wole (Jimi's elder brother), the artistic Ansa, the devout Nene, the beautiful but mysterious Efua, and so many other interesting characters.
It is a novel I will recommend for every teenager, a novel that is simple and didactic.
cool. Jimi Solade is woken up by his brother Wole. He is so happy to see him as Wole is not always around because of some crime he committed. Jimi rushes to prepare for school as it is the first day of the school year and he was going to be in SS3. He comes to take his breakfast when suddenly his father walks in, seeing Wole , flares up. His wife Mrs Solade pleads with him to forgive Wole (we are made to understand that Wole had forged his father’s signature and made away with a lot of money leaving his father almost bankrupt). Jimi gets to school with his best friend Ansa just before the Morning Assembly. As the students march into their classroom, jimi is seen to be everyone’s favorite boy. He is said to be smart and friendly. Ansa his friend is only good at Painting.
I was 12 when I read this book first and in Junior high school, I reread 2019 a year before i graduated and it was the perfect coming of age and Nigerian school experience book, it managed to arouse all sorts of emotions from me too
This book is okay. I read it when I was 10 or 11( can’t really remember) and I loved it. Now I’m 16 and I’ve read more books so compared to other literary works this book is interesting but the plot is flimsy and see through. The book had the potential to be something more profound but it just wasn’t. It didn’t really depict Nigeria the way it is. Talking about parties and volunteering and stuff the way he did just wasn’t Nigerian- ish. That aside the book was good enough. I had a giant crush on Jimi since the first time I read the book. He’s a really dope and talented character. He and efua were a cool ship also.
This book is the one for you if you’re looking to read something not too deep but interesting.
I got this book from my siblings, heard they read it in preparation for an exam Jamb-Joint Admissions Matriculation Board, an exam in Nigeria which enables you to get admission into a higher institution.
This was a really great read, short finished it in one day, but interesting and filled with a lot of lessons. The writers style was fluid and I really loved it. I actually wanted more.
Jimi is a bright student, athlete, all round perfect kid. In his finals at his secondary school, Forcados High, we are taken through his ordeals as a finalist.
His life has been perfect until now, he sees all that glitters ain't gold. From his senior brothers crazy lifestyle, to his dad's stifled relationship with his family, to his mums health problems. Life deals him a heavy blow and at the end he has to learn how to survive and be better.
I loved this book, I could relate completely to some of the characters, from having friends who I felt were better than myself, to being an outcast as a student due to certain acts I supposedly committed or crimes against me.
I also loved how the author expressed some strong themes in form of advices /lessons to the young minds; rape, love, family, health conditions like asthma, cancer, the girl child and her travails, and so many others.
A totally great read for the young minds, you should definitely read this as well as give a child today.
I read this book when I was 12 years old, I could smell the air being described when I read this book. My favourite part was when they were walking on the street after the police and agbero clash. The way the author described it reach close to home. The part I adore was the ending when Jimi and Ansa were laughing .
The Last Days at Forcados High by A.H. Mohammed is a nostalgic, heartfelt story about friendship, adolescence, and the bittersweet end of school life. The novel follows students as they navigate the pressures of exams, relationships, and personal growth during their final days at Forcados High.
Mohammed’s writing is engaging, capturing the humor, anxieties, and small triumphs of teenage life with authenticity and warmth. The story explores themes of loyalty, ambition, and self-discovery, reflecting the universal experiences of growing up and saying goodbye to familiar places and people.
It is a touching, relatable, and reflective read that evokes both laughter and quiet contemplation, perfect for anyone who remembers the intensity of their school years.
People hyped this book so much fr, and I’ve been trying to read it for like a year and a half now, finally got to read it and I have to say…..I’m beyond disappointed. This books lacks any inkling of forethought whatsoever, everything just reeks of inconsistencies; horrible dialogue, no plot AT ALL! It just felt like the author was going with the flow. If I had read this book before now, my review will be a different one entirely, maybe just maybe this book was really meant for readers under 18. Cause for the average adult reader it just isn’t it and I’m not implying that the book was a bad one, it just isn’t what you’d call “quality material”.
I absolutely love this novel! It's a quick-read and is definitely something you would read over and over again. At least... I did :') Totally recommend it!
This book although short, filled me with a lot of emotions. There are so many well written and relatable characters. It may feel rushed or at times plastic, but nevertheless, very enjoyable.
