Fueled by caffeine and powered by rain, Seattle is chock full of the odd, the unusual and the endearing. This book will lead you to its treasures. Revised and updated edition.
Seattle has fueled the hopes, dreams, and imaginations of countless individuals throughout its history. Their energy, ideas, and inventions have influenced the city’s skyline, the evolution of air travel, the music and art worlds, and even the very coffee we drink. They are the reason Seattle is gifted with so many unusual, offbeat, and truly compeling places for explorers to discover and enjoy, from a coin-operated attraction filled with enormous shoes, the world’s greenest commercial building, and urban old growth forests, to a haunted staircase and museums dedicated to pinball, dialysis machines, and rubber chickens. 111 Places in Seattle That You Must Not Miss invites and inspires locals and visitors alike to seek out the Emerald City’s hidden treasures, overlooked gems, and charming curiosities.
Living in the Seattle area for about 11 years and was surprised I only visited 28/111 spots. Some of the places and experiences I wouldn’t be interested in visiting but there were 22 places I added to my list to explore. Each place gives history, address, website (if applicable), getting there which includes address and public transit options, and also tips (if it is difficult to find or the best time to visit).
Eh...I wish more traditional travel books publishers would publish books covering Seattle more frequently. Instead, this was what's available.
I mostly used this to help plan for an upcoming (2023) trip to Seattle, sort of as a source of potential inspiration. Out of 111, I only came up with 1 place to visit that I was interested in and had not already seen on previous visits. Other readers' mileage will vary.
Many places were also a bit far afield, which is sad, because I know there are other must not miss places closer to the city center/more accessible to visitors.
That said, there's a good variety in the book and the pictures are great. The place profiles are quick and to the point.
Overall, maybe also try looking at points of interest on Google maps?
If looking for a guidebook that states the usual Seattle tourist attractions like is the Space Needle, Pike Place Market, and the waterfront—this is not that book.
This guidebook should be retitled as “Seattle’s Quirky Places of Interest.” There are plaques, staircases, and buildings that don’t rate more than a few passing minutes, while others are definite destinations, such as the Pinball Museum.
Some regular stops made the list such as the Great Wheel and Woodland Park Zoo, although how could the Fremont Troll and the Gum Wall be absent.
Overall- nice layout and informative with excellent photos.
This was a great read which had some hidden gems I didn't know about despite loving here for over half a decade. This book has resulted in me adding a bunch of Want To Visit pins on my map. Highly recommended.
Interesting collection of Seattle sights: some I had experienced, others were new to me. The write-ups were generally interesting, and I would argue some of the sights are not worth mentioning. A good “atlas of the weird” for exploratory Seattleites.
