Breakthrough in Beginning Reading and Writing: The Evidence-Based Approach to Pinpointing Students' Needs and Delivering Targeted Instruction

Rate this book
Drawing on major new insights in brain research, Gentry shows how reading and writing develop in five phases—from operations with no letter knowledge to understanding of phonics chunks—that provide the blueprint for instructional approaches. The book enables teachers to identify a child's phase of development, set reasonable expectations for growth, and select the methods that will move each child forward. For use with Grades PreK-2.

The DVD that accompanies this book is very helpful for understanding Gentry's techniques. There is a chapter about changes needed in Reading Recovery that I found very refreshing - why wait until 1st grade to give help to struggling readers? Kindergarten is a great opportunity for that. Gentry's techniques are very child-centered and developmentally appropriate - things that any adult spending quality time with a child can do. Most important point of the book: teach reading and writing together, beginning with the child's own ideas.
