In 2006 she made her fiction debut with The Reason I Won't Quit, and in 2014 Bookstore Girls won the Grand Prize in the "Book I want made into a movie" category at the Shizuoka Bookstore Awards. It went on to be adapted for television, sell 200,000 copies and lay the ground for six sequels.

Mesajları ile kadınların iş ve özel hayatındaki dezavantajlı konumlarını ve başarmak için daha çok çalışmaları ve daha fazla fedekarlıkta bulunmaları gerektiğini, oldukça başarılı bir hikaye ile anlatmış.

In questa storia troviamo due protagoniste: due libraie che lavorano in una delle librerie più antiche di Kichijoji, un bel quartiere di Tokyo. Riko è la vicedirettrice con molta esperienza e tranquilla mentre Aki la sua sobordinata è sempre piena di nuove idee e pimpante, tanto è vero che fra le due non scorre buon sangue, anzi, quasi vengono alle mani già fin dalle prime pagine. Ma la loro libreria rischia la chiusura: è così che si uniranno per tentare di non farla fallire.
Sinceramente non mi è piaciuta tanto questa storia, mi sarei aspettato tutt'altra cosa.

Um livro sobre livros que demonstra o funcionamento de uma livraria no Japão. Seguimos a jornada de Reiko, um a gerente de 40 anos solteira e cuidadora do pai, e Aki, uma jovem recém-casada que entra em conflito com a sua gerente.
Demorou para entrar nesta história, as brigas entre as duas protagonistas não faziam muito sentido para mim. Mas a medida que conhecemos melhor o ambiente da livraria e em que nos explicado a história das duas protagonistas a narrativa ganhou uma nova forma.
Gostei principalmente de observar Reiko e Aki pondo de lado as suas rivalidades para tentar salvar a livraria. Assim como adorei conhecer novos autores japoneses, e entender melhor o seu entusiasmo pela banda desenhada.
Demorou para entrar nesta história, as brigas entre as duas protagonistas não faziam muito sentido para mim. Mas a medida que conhecemos melhor o ambiente da livraria e em que nos explicado a história das duas protagonistas a narrativa ganhou uma nova forma.

Un libro che avevo scoperto su Ig e che mi aveva incuriosito.
Non una lettura semplice, anzi a tratti un po noiosa.
MA.. decolla al improvviso e non puoi non voler sapere cosa ne sarà delle due protagoniste.
Due donne molto diverse tra loro. Dapprima non in sintonia, ma che di fronte alle necessità sanno fare fronte comune per raggiungere lo scopo.
Non una lettura semplice, anzi a tratti un po noiosa.

Poco distante dal centro di Tokyo, c'é il quartiere di Kichijoji. Un bel quartiere, da poco riqualificato, piacevole e con molti luoghi dove passare un tranquillo pomeriggio, come la libreria Pegasus Shobō.
Fa parte di una catena, ma questa sede é una delle prime ad essere state aperte e al suo interno lavorano, tra i vari dipendenti, due libraie che ci faranno da Cicerone nel mondo delle librerie, offrendo un piccolo sguardo sul mondo dell'editoria, sul mondo del lavoro e sulle differenze che intercorrono tra uomini e donne sul posto di lavoro, dal ruolo, allo stipendio, alla nomea.
Da una parte troviamo Nishioka Riko, una donna di quarant'anni, vicedirettrice della libreria, testarda, stacanovista e separatasi da poco dal suo fidanzato. Dall'altra Obata Aki, una giovane ragazza che si occupa del reparto fumetti, é ottimista, creativa e appena sposata. Hanno due modi diversi di rapportarsi al lavoro e alla vita, non vanno particolarmente d'accordo, ma sono pronte a creare un sodalizio e un fronte comune, insieme agli altri dipendenti, per impedire alla loro libreria di chiudere.
Tra turni, clienti, esposizioni ed eventi seguiamo la loro vita, professionale e privata. Le vedremo unire le forze e superare la loro rivalità: l'obiettivo comune crea, con tutti, un nuovo clima armonioso, in cui ognuno dà il massimo e contribuisce come può per risollevare le sorti della libreria. Le conosciamo in ogni dettaglio, anche l'approfondimento psicologico non viene tralasciato: l'autrice rende molto bene i sentimenti e le emozioni che provano affrontando le varie difficoltà e i loro pensieri nelle varie vicende.
Una scrittura semplice, molto scorrevole, che ti trascina pagina dopo pagina nelle loro vite, tanto da coinvolgerti nei loro progetti per tenere aperta la libreria, e che parla dell'amore per libri, fumetti, light novel, riviste e qual si voglia pubblicazione cartacea e della bellezza di leggere la carta stampata.

Um livro sobre o poder dos livros e a felicidade que deles provêm.
Este livro fala sobre duas livreiras -Aki e Riko - que se odeiam profundamente, mas têm de trabalhar juntas de forma a garantir o sucesso da livraria Pégaso. Trabalhar com alguém que tem opiniões diferentes das nossas nem sempre é fácil ainda por cima quando não gostamos da outra pessoa. Será que elas irão conseguir?
Na minha opinião este livro poderia ser bem melhor…
Estava com as expectativas elevadas porque gosto imenso de livros que falem sobre livros mas este, infelizmente, não me cativou da forma que eu idealizava.
Demorou bastante tempo a desenvolver e eu, pessoalmente, prefiro ler histórias cuja ação se desenrole com alguma fluidez.
Apesar disso, gostei das estratégias de marketing que a Aki e a Riko usaram para manter a livraria à tona assim como certas práticas japonesas que desconhecia completamente! É bom quando os livros nos ensinam sobre outras culturas.
O que mais me marcou neste livro foi, sem dúvida, a coragem da Riko quando os seus colegas de trabalho tentaram arruinar a sua reputação…
Achei o final muito emotivo.

Adorei a beleza da escrita e a progressão da ação, contudo não amei toda a quezília inicial entre a Riko e a Aki (não achei que fosse necessário ser algo tão forte...).
A Livraria Pégaso é de facto um lugar muito especial, não só por ter livros, mas por ser feita de pessoas que amam livros e dão tudo de si pelas obras que ali estão...é um amor único o amor aos livros ❤️
É para os amantes de histórias de superação e de resiliência no que diz sentido ao carácter das personagens. Ver a mudança na livraria e em todos é sublime e o desfecho final é algo muito poético e esperançoso ✨️

I loved this gem of a book. It is beautifully conceived and written and perfectly translated. I found the progression of its themes- the ongoing threat to bookstores, competition within the workplace, the treatment of women who dare rise within the ranks (by women and men) and collegiality )between women particularly) - healing and heartwarming. I liked it from the first page but the final chapters saw me glued to the pages. I miss it already.

What a wonderful book. I love it when I find gems like this by walking through a bookstore without any prior recommendation from people or the internet.
This book is so much more than I initially thought. This is not just about two female book sellers having beef at work. This story reveals how toxic the workplace culture is in Japan and how women are still struggling to earn equal treatment in society. I can imagine that in Japan, this is considered a radically feminist story, however, for western standards it might seem to only scratch the surface. At the same time, this novel shows a deep appreciation for bookstore and the bookselling, which is always a theme I adore. I just love learning about another culture through the mundane, everyday lives of people.

最近很想重讀《書店女子》，便從圖書館借回來看了。記得數年前我初次讀這本書的印象是「連續劇般的灑狗血宅鬥開局，沒想到最後竟變成熱血青春風格的職場奮鬥史」，故事以西岡理子、北村亞紀兩位截然不同的女性帶出書店店員的職場生態，兩人由於年齡、際遇、經驗的差異逐步累積出對立的氣氛，而職場同仁出於豔羨、嫉妒或歧視的心態，有意無意的流言蜚語、小圈圈的氣氛，加深了她們之間的矛盾和互相敵視。
可能乍看上述簡介，會以為是那種病態、窒息的致鬱系故事，不不不，作者碧野圭善於捕捉人性因嫉妒、怨忿、偏見而變得不堪的陰暗面，但很快會有人跳出來打抱不平或透過當事人反省自身存在的惡意來沖淡那股沉鬱的氣氛，遏止了職場環境的惡化，讓各方之間的紛爭可以回歸到單純因「位置不同而考量不同才產生的意見相左」，一起從這個認知基礎為起點，學習磨合、協調，找出雙方都能接受的方案。
《書店女子》的善念與惡意互相交織，哪一方的力量都未曾消失，持續互相對抗，以為快被惡意壓垮、沮喪失望得再也站不起來時，總有人的善念會拉住自己，像劃破黑暗的一絲光亮般提醒她們還是有人願意同理你的處境、支持你想做的事情。碧野圭的劇情安排描摹出人情百態，讀者從理解理子、亞紀各自的難處，到後期忍不住想為書店全員的「保住書店大作戰」加油打氣，書店同仁良性競爭又團結互助的風氣改善了初期同事間各踩一腳互使絆子的不良職場環境，故事因而始終巧妙維持著輕快活潑的質感。
亞紀的個性直爽、不愛背地裡耍手段、無論好惡都會直球對決，這樣的個性讓她一開始在講究合群的職場裡顯得格格不入，加上書店同仁的偏見和中傷逐漸演變成單方面的職場霸凌。亞紀明白自己比他人幸運的機遇，但秉持著「只要堂堂正正面對，就不需要羞愧」的心態，在天馬書房克盡職守，在這過程裡明白自己熱愛「書店店員」這份工作。她的人格特質在初期曾讓她的職場人際關係窒礙難行，卻在任職的吉祥寺分店面臨倒閉危機之際，拯救了身心頹喪的店長西岡理子。耿直無畏的指出書店男性職員忌恨升遷的女性店長，率先站在理子身邊聲援她，繼而激勵手足無措的眾人振作起來思索對策。這一幕的亞紀就像漫畫裡的熱血主角帥氣，為窒息的空間注入新鮮空氣、重振力量，讓人想為她大聲喝彩！
理子也不是惡人，她身為資深書店工作者又是管理階層，必須比基層員工顧全更多層面，無法單憑熱忱就不顧一切地投入資源策劃書店活動，只有謹慎評估利潤可行，確保書店、出版社、讀者、作者都能在活動裡盡興後，才能放膽去實踐。這些顧慮讓理子被相處不和的基層員工認定是個保守又不知變通的主管。私人感情上，理子其實也跟女店員一樣暗暗羨慕亞紀，但不便將這股感受說出口，就在這股情緒下默許下屬們貶損亞紀形象，卻不自知身為主管這個行為會裂解工作團隊的和氣，也給三田留下假藉大義在亞紀身上發洩怨忿的印象。直到被三田指出「感情用事」後，才開始正視內心被扭曲的負面感受，學著改進。加上後來有一同守住書店的共同目標下，不沾惹不必要的是非，凝聚起四分五裂的職場關係，慢慢團結起來共同守護書店存續。
故事裡的男性職員如圃田、十井雖非大奸大惡之人，但語氣神態不經意流露出對理子的不屑嫉妒也讓人感到不舒服，表面笑臉相迎、實則背後插刀，抹黑理子在總公司的形象，百般紛擾時又裝成置身事外的模樣，總說女人心機深重，男人要搞職場鬥爭，兩面三刀的卑劣手段使起來，女人恐怕也自嘆弗如了。讓兩人逐步和解的因素除了理子的自省改善，亞紀領悟到「男性同仁給她的關注愛護」跟「理子飽受男性同仁的群起攻訐」其實是一體兩面的存在，根源皆來自男人看待女人的標準一致——伏低做小為男性服務，而非憑藉個人實力跟男性公平競爭，所以已累積許多功績的理子被提防，職場新鮮人亞紀被關愛。這份領悟讓亞紀認知到理子的遭遇總有一天自己也可能會經歷到，本就不認同男性同事有意無意表現出譏諷、輕視女性態度的亞紀，這下更加無法對這些事情視而不見。
書店裡職場人際攻防的暗潮洶湧，可以看見當人們強行壓抑心結，無法找到適合的方式好好面對、釋放時，終究會以某種形式發洩出來傷害別人。例如男性職員對理子的忌憚與陷害、理子對同性後輩的負面情緒、亞紀滿心怨懟下也曾附和過同事私下的嘲諷。我印象很深刻的一幕是三田指責理子時，可以清晰感受到理子「明明不是只有我感情用事，我也常被其他人的感情用事給波及，為什麼只有我得受這種責難？」的委屈和自我辯解。作者筆下的人世百態以亞紀、理子兩位主角為中心，勾勒出女子生存誌，兩人的形象都相當立體，有許多不同的面向，有著人性的弱點，人品上也有值得學習之處。
《書店女子》後半段專注描寫大家提升書店業績的努力上，這部份我看得很開心，我喜歡角色們為了拼命動腦筋改善生活境況的過程。大家各司其職又齊心協力朝目標前進，過程中理子充分授權讓書店員工在許可範圍內揮灑創意，看到他們的努力能化為肉眼可見的成果，就像明確看見自己從濃霧漫布的森林裡找到出口的線索一樣，有一種逐步通往明亮的正向氣氛。而理子的轉變讓其他人改觀，看到理子為了書店存續四處奔走、拼命尋找突破口的積極、勇於承擔責任，周遭同事湧現「想要守護這個拼命的店長」、「想要跟這個人一起奮鬥」的心情，兩人三腳般的努力過程也激發出全體職員的情感共同體，真的既熱血又充滿溫情。
我很喜歡理子慢慢在書店走動的場景，可以體會到她對吉祥寺分店的深厚情感，不只是本身對書和書店的感情，還包括對大家奮力打造出來的店舖樣貌，珍惜著所有人努力的成果。《書店女子》本身出現大量書本，看到熟悉的書名和作家會忍不住湧現類似他鄉遇故知的親切感，碧野圭在劇情安排上將書店工作者的浪漫理想和實務層面兩者兼顧，有現實感也有爽感。最終結果雖然無法盡如人意，但貴人也遞來新的希望，算是相當漂亮的收尾，讀起來非常暢快。
可能乍看上述簡介，會以為是那種病態、窒息的致鬱系故事，不不不，作者碧野圭善於捕捉人性因嫉妒、怨忿、偏見而變得不堪的陰暗面，但很快會有人跳出來打抱不平或透過當事人反省自身存在的惡意來沖淡那股沉鬱的氣氛，遏止了職場環境的惡化，讓各方之間的紛爭可以回歸到單純因「位置不同而考量不同才產生的意見相左」，一起從這個認知基礎為起點，學習磨合、協調，找出雙方都能接受的方案。
《書店女子》的善念與惡意互相交織，哪一方的力量都未曾消失，持續互相對抗，以為快被惡意壓垮、沮喪失望得再也站不起來時，總有人的善念會拉住自己，像劃破黑暗的一絲光亮般提醒她們還是有人願意同理你的處境、支持你想做的事情。碧野圭的劇情安排描摹出人情百態，讀者從理解理子、亞紀各自的難處，到後期忍不住想為書店全員的「保住書店大作戰」加油打氣，書店同仁良性競爭又團結互助的風氣改善了初期同事間各踩一腳互使絆子的不良職場環境，故事因而始終巧妙維持著輕快活潑的質感。
亞紀的個性直爽、不愛背地裡耍手段、無論好惡都會直球對決，這樣的個性讓她一開始在講究合群的職場裡顯得格格不入，加上書店同仁的偏見和中傷逐漸演變成單方面的職場霸凌。亞紀明白自己比他人幸運的機遇，但秉持著「只要堂堂正正面對，就不需要羞愧」的心態，在天馬書房克盡職守，在這過程裡明白自己熱愛「書店店員」這份工作。她的人格特質在初期曾讓她的職場人際關係窒礙難行，卻在任職的吉祥寺分店面臨倒閉危機之際，拯救了身心頹喪的店長西岡理子。耿直無畏的指出書店男性職員忌恨升遷的女性店長，率先站在理子身邊聲援她，繼而激勵手足無措的眾人振作起來思索對策。這一幕的亞紀就像漫畫裡的熱血主角帥氣，為窒息的空間注入新鮮空氣、重振力量，讓人想為她大聲喝彩！
理子也不是惡人，她身為資深書店工作者又是管理階層，必須比基層員工顧全更多層面，無法單憑熱忱就不顧一切地投入資源策劃書店活動，只有謹慎評估利潤可行，確保書店、出版社、讀者、作者都能在活動裡盡興後，才能放膽去實踐。這些顧慮讓理子被相處不和的基層員工認定是個保守又不知變通的主管。私人感情上，理子其實也跟女店員一樣暗暗羨慕亞紀，但不便將這股感受說出口，就在這股情緒下默許下屬們貶損亞紀形象，卻不自知身為主管這個行為會裂解工作團隊的和氣，也給三田留下假藉大義在亞紀身上發洩怨忿的印象。直到被三田指出「感情用事」後，才開始正視內心被扭曲的負面感受，學著改進。加上後來有一同守住書店的共同目標下，不沾惹不必要的是非，凝聚起四分五裂的職場關係，慢慢團結起來共同守護書店存續。
故事裡的男性職員如圃田、十井雖非大奸大惡之人，但語氣神態不經意流露出對理子的不屑嫉妒也讓人感到不舒服，表面笑臉相迎、實則背後插刀，抹黑理子在總公司的形象，百般紛擾時又裝成置身事外的模樣，總說女人心機深重，男人要搞職場鬥爭，兩面三刀的卑劣手段使起來，女人恐怕也自嘆弗如了。讓兩人逐步和解的因素除了理子的自省改善，亞紀領悟到「男性同仁給她的關注愛護」跟「理子飽受男性同仁的群起攻訐」其實是一體兩面的存在，根源皆來自男人看待女人的標準一致——伏低做小為男性服務，而非憑藉個人實力跟男性公平競爭，所以已累積許多功績的理子被提防，職場新鮮人亞紀被關愛。這份領悟讓亞紀認知到理子的遭遇總有一天自己也可能會經歷到，本就不認同男性同事有意無意表現出譏諷、輕視女性態度的亞紀，這下更加無法對這些事情視而不見。
書店裡職場人際攻防的暗潮洶湧，可以看見當人們強行壓抑心結，無法找到適合的方式好好面對、釋放時，終究會以某種形式發洩出來傷害別人。例如男性職員對理子的忌憚與陷害、理子對同性後輩的負面情緒、亞紀滿心怨懟下也曾附和過同事私下的嘲諷。我印象很深刻的一幕是三田指責理子時，可以清晰感受到理子「明明不是只有我感情用事，我也常被其他人的感情用事給波及，為什麼只有我得受這種責難？」的委屈和自我辯解。作者筆下的人世百態以亞紀、理子兩位主角為中心，勾勒出女子生存誌，兩人的形象都相當立體，有許多不同的面向，有著人性的弱點，人品上也有值得學習之處。
《書店女子》後半段專注描寫大家提升書店業績的努力上，這部份我看得很開心，我喜歡角色們為了拼命動腦筋改善生活境況的過程。大家各司其職又齊心協力朝目標前進，過程中理子充分授權讓書店員工在許可範圍內揮灑創意，看到他們的努力能化為肉眼可見的成果，就像明確看見自己從濃霧漫布的森林裡找到出口的線索一樣，有一種逐步通往明亮的正向氣氛。而理子的轉變讓其他人改觀，看到理子為了書店存續四處奔走、拼命尋找突破口的積極、勇於承擔責任，周遭同事湧現「想要守護這個拼命的店長」、「想要跟這個人一起奮鬥」的心情，兩人三腳般的努力過程也激發出全體職員的情感共同體，真的既熱血又充滿溫情。
我很喜歡理子慢慢在書店走動的場景，可以體會到她對吉祥寺分店的深厚情感，不只是本身對書和書店的感情，還包括對大家奮力打造出來的店舖樣貌，珍惜著所有人努力的成果。《書店女子》本身出現大量書本，看到熟悉的書名和作家會忍不住湧現類似他鄉遇故知的親切感，碧野圭在劇情安排上將書店工作者的浪漫理想和實務層面兩者兼顧，有現實感也有爽感。最終結果雖然無法盡如人意，但貴人也遞來新的希望，算是相當漂亮的收尾，讀起來非常暢快。

Hoş, kadın da kadına kırdırılıyor biraz ama o bizim aramızda bişey sonuçta, elin sakallısını alakadar etmez! Kolay okunuyor, keyifli. 7 kitaplık seriymiş ama kalanını okumam muhtemelen, ki Türkçesi zaten yok, Japonca bilmem, naslolacaksa, neyse, belli de olmaz belki aniden okurum. The book is deeply touching and exposes the lack of power of women in Japan, althought it gives its main feminine characters the will to assume greater responsibilities.
There is hard work, imagination and a lot of merit trying to save the Kichijoji Bookshop.

This was my first translated Japanese book of the year and I picked it as it came highly recommended. I was hoping to love it, and I did like it, but not the whole book. For me, this book exists in two parts. Before Rika becomes manager and after. Let me try to explain.
The book is essentially about two main characters: Aki, a floor supervisor, and Rika, her boss and a deputy manager. They work in the flagship store of a big bookstore chain. They are both trying to prove themselves in a sexist world, and are sort of workplace rivals. Around the time that Rika is promoted, the bookstore is also threatened with closure, so they have to work together to save it.
💔Before Rika becomes manager:
I hated this part. I get workplace rivalry. But this one was not healthy competition. Instead, it’s gossip, petty jealousy, and women pulling women down. I can read about men being the discriminators, but reading this part left me with a bad taste. I understand it was written a while back but it still doesn’t warrant such an ugly Part 1. At least revisions could have been made during translation.
I was almost about to DNF but what kept me reading were the amazing book recommendations and learning about the Japanese publishing industry. And I am so glad I persevered.
❤️After Rika becomes manager:
This is where the story actually starts after almost half the book is done. This is what I was waiting for. For people to come together for their love of books and to try to save their beloved bookstore. Everyone puts their best self forward and the ideas they use to make their bookstore a success were amazing. I loved this part.
🌸I need hope and motivation in my books not girls spreading rumours or fighting just because the other one is pretty or successful. Women need to unite against the misogynists of this world, the Tsujii’s and the Hatakeda’s who would do anything to undermine a woman’s work and authority.
Like I said I would still recommend it, as books about bookshops are >>>>, but with disclaimers.

This was probably one of my favourite Japanese translated books I’ve read! The conversion was so well done, with the lengthy paragraphs and explanations you usually get in Japanese to English not being prominent. All the details in this were important and built the world, all the emotions and helped with the character experience .
This book is massively about growth within yourself, and emphasised the care you bring to a workplace. I absolutely loved the two characters we followed, Riko and Aki, and their journey from being bitter and unhappy, to becoming close acquaintances and bettering themselves. It was such a beautiful build, and if you’re a book lover you’ll appreciate the elements pulled into the plot as it’s based in a bookstore. It was so fun to read all the new developments on their journey to “save” the store and how they truly banded together.
The book definitely touched on prominent issues we see in Japanese culture as well, with misogynistic stereotypes in the workplace as well as the difficulties in relationships with the “businessman” culture. This was very important to see included in the novel and encompassed in a realistic way.
A very wholesome read, with heartwarming moments and lots of deep thinking involved. Definitely one for the book lovers, or people who want a gentle introduction to Japanese translated Fiction.
