A Special Forces veteran reveals top-secret missions and contingency plans so extreme that no one believed they would ever be put into action, in an adventure-filled memoir that includes the author's days as an original Green Beret.
Sgt. Major Garner gives a great account of what it was like as some of the first members of an ODA: Operational Detatchment Alpha in the beginning years. Serving Laos, Cuba, Panama and beyond Sgt. Major Garner was very derserving of the title, Green Beret.
Your going to have to look long and hard to find a first person account of Army Special Forces that can match this book for excellence. Joe Garner was a walking encyclopedia on SF, particularly as it applied to jungle operations. Reading this you quickly understand why attention to the small details often makes the difference between being a survivor or a casualty in a combat situation. The only knock against this book is the many military acronyms but there is a glossary included to help you with that.
Excellent book about a extraordinary man that came from an extremely difficult childhood raised with abuse and neglect, he became a strong and independent leader in the most difficult job and most difficult skills in the Army during his tenure. Great insights into many aspects of the military during his tenure.
