‘Six In A Bed' is part of the Oxford Reading Tree which is used to teach reading in 80% of primary schools. This book is the Oxford Reading Tree, Stage 1; ‘Stage 1 First Words' edition.
As it is stage one this book is great for EYFS first words and getting the children to use their phonic knowledge of 'sounding out words' to blend the sounds and form those words. Simultaneously, they will enjoy it because this is such a lovely, well illustrated, and happy book. I find that the Oxford Reading Tree books are very uplifting books and they deal with a lot of real life things that happen, so there is that great contextualising and identification with children's interests, which you do need if you want to engage children and get them to learn. I have read this book, along with many others from the Oxford Reading Tree collection to children in EYFS and it has gone down a treat. As soon as they have finished one, they cannot wait to get onto to next one and see what their favourite characters are up to next.
Ah, Roderick Hunt, what a vital part of my growing up you were.
I’m fairly certain it’s a British rite of passage to read a Roderick Hunt book. They are the books you have to read at school, the ones that will move you towards the entirety of the literary world.
And boy, were they ever fun!
It doesn’t matter how old I get, I’m still more than capable of recalling details from his stories.
