About the author

Paula Metcalf has written and illustrated many children’s books, and she’s been doing so for a very long time. (Her parents still own an early original illustrated poem, the short but pithy "Pin in Tin," penned at age four.) She went on to study illustration at the Cambridge School of Art in England, where she is currently a visiting lecturer in the master’s program in children’s book illustration. Paula Metcalf lives in Cambridge, England.

A cute little children's book about winter.

Charlie est un corbeau, probablement très jeune car il n'a jamais vu l'hiver.

A peine son nid construit, ses amis partent en "vacances" ou pour dormir. Charlie, un peu naïf, ne sait pas ce qu'il se passe. Il y a des choses étranges qui se produisent, les feuilles qui tombent, le lac se transforme en glace, le corbeau est perturbé.
Il rencontre l'écureuil qui ne comprend pas non plus. Ils sont un peu affolés, quand il commence à neiger, pensant que la lune est en train de tomber.

L'ours les entend et sors de sa grotte leur expliquer un peu les choses. Mais les deux compères ne sont pas assez calmes pour rester avec l'ours, du coup ils se retrouvent dehors, l'ours devant hiberner. Ils ont envie de faire des choses. Mais pas facile de voler avec un écureuil sur le dos. Ils tombent dans la neige et s'amusent dedans et apprécient grandement. Finalement ils construisent leurs amis en bonhommes de neige.

La découverte de la neige par deux animaux amis qui ne partent pas, n'hibernent pas. Leur amitié sera renforcée.

Une jolie petite histoire d'amitié, de découverte de saison, de l'hiver.

This book is a fantastic resource which highlights the common misconceptions of the seasons, with the story's protagonist being Charlie the Crow. This is an easy read or listen for young children, who could later benefit from a scientific lesson based on seasons. This book provides a receptive context for the class teacher to question the current understanding of weather and seasons in the UK.

We liked how the animals were really kind. It also reminded us of our African topic because swallow flew there for the winter. We loved it when the bird gave the squirrel a ride.
