This themed collection centers around the theme of the body and all the ways it is haunted, in good and ill, yet carries on. This is her family ghosts, the dead, her almost death and rebirth from cancer, madness, passion, her fears, her fury, and so much abundant and dangerous love, told without mercy and contains selections covering over 30 years of spoken word pieces and poetry.

The Body As Haunted, by Pixie Bruner. 2024.

Bruner's poetry is uncompromising. There is no sugar-coated sentimentalism here. Rather, what we find is a voice of sharp wit and keen insight. Poems that grab you by the throat, but then caress your cheek. An interplay of power and sensuality, grief and liberation. An honesty etched out in words that are clearly based on lived experience. Scars and warts and all. Beauty and horror. The dead and the living. A clarion call to embrace life in the face of all its messy contradictions. Potent stuff.

Pixie Bruner’s “The Body As Haunted” is a poetry tour de force. It simply pours its soul into every word and leaves you breathless. Ms. Bruner delves deep into loss, illness, passions -ranging from love and life, injustices and wrongs. This is combined with modern everyday absurdities, interwoven with haunted themes ripe with Greek mythology, pop culture and personal experience. I found myself blown away by the onslaught of madness, laughing at oddities that are so deftly observed, crying at the quiet tenderness of retrospection of grief or loneliness endured. It is a collection of such range but united by the lyrical biting wit and creative take on the no holds barred journey that is life. I highly recommend this book. You will never look at the world the same after this read; with wild, pointed abandonment that is painfully, beautifully freeing.

This is a poetry book full of evocative thought and robust, powerful language. It doesn’t pull any punches while delivering a deep emotional resonance for the reader. The poems are dark and forceful, exploring the deep underbelly of human nature and society. This is not sweet, wholesome poetry, but the words will worm into your brain stirring interpretations and reflections. It is exactly what poetry should be and I highly recommend it.
