Robert Adams, formerly professor of human services development at the University of Lincoln and professor of social work at Teesside University, has been visiting professor at the University of the West of Scotland and now is emeritus professor in the School of Health and Social Care, Teesside University. He worked in the UK penal system, beginning at HM Prison Pentonville and latterly as acting governor of a youth custody institution. Subsequently, his first social work post was as director of Barnardo’s first multi-professional project supporting children and families in the community.

He has authored and edited more than 100 publications, in social policy, criminal justice, education, health and social work. He is co-founder and chair of the Writers’ Guild Book Cooperative, promotes ‘social’ fiction and writes short stories and novels including the psychological thriller Antman and the crime novel The Really Dreadful Crime Company which was best-selling Kindle book in South Africa in Autumn 2011.

His latest academic book, co-written with Wade Tovey, is the forthcoming Consultancy in Public Services: Empowerment and Transformation. Other books include Protests by Pupils: Empowerment, Schooling and the State, Prison Riots in Britain and the USA, the best-selling, co-edited social work trilogy (Social Work: Themes, Issues and Critical Debates; Critical Practice in Social Work and Practising Social Work in a Complex World), The Short Guide to Social Work, Working with Children and Families: Knowledge and Contexts for Practice and several books on empowerment in education and social services, including Empowerment, Participation in Social Work which is in its fourth edition since publication in 1990 and has been translated into several languages, including Korean, Japanese and Chinese. His books on health and social care include Foundations of Health and Social Care and Foundations of Complementary Therapies and Alternative Medicine.
