A hostile takeover.Political and economic chaos.South America is imploding and a US Navy submarine and SEAL team may be the only ones to stop it…

As the winds of change sweep through South America, chaos and uncertainty reign. A radical political takeover looms, threatening to plunge the entire Western Hemisphere into turmoil. And the unrest doesn’t stop there. Seeing the destabilization, China moves to exert its influence economically and politically—further threatening peace and freedom in the region.

But hope is not lost—a team of elite Navy SEALs and one submarine race to determine and then confront the threat. With the fate of the region hanging in the balance, they embark on a dangerous—and likely impossible—mission.

In a volatile political landscape where China seeks to expand its influence, the SEALs and submariners navigate high stakes showdowns and make split-second decisions that will determine the future of not only the hemisphere but the world order.

Drawing upon decades of experience on nuclear submarines and the study of military history, bestselling authors Wallace and Keith present another it-could-really-happen thriller perfect for fans of Tom Clancy, W.E.B. Griffin, Brad Thor, and Mark Greaney.

Born and raised in Eastern Ohio, Commander Wallace received his commission in the US Navy and a degree in engineering from The Ohio State University. After the obligatory and memorable interview with Admiral Rickover, he was accepted into the nuclear power and submarine communities. He served on two of Admiral Rickover’s famous “Forty One for Freedom”, the USS John Adams SSBN 620 and the USS Woodrow Wilson SSBN 624, during which time he made nine one-hundred-day deterrent patrols through the height of the Cold War.

Commander Wallace served as Executive Officer on the Sturgeon class nuclear attack submarine Spadefish. Spadefish and all her sisters were decommissioned during the downsizing that occurred in the 1990′s. The passing of that great ship served as the inspiration for “Final Bearing.”

Commander Wallace then commanded the Los Angeles class nuclear attack submarine USS Houston SSN 713 from February 1990 to August 1992. During this tour of duty he worked extensively with the SEAL community developing SEAL/submarine tactics. Under his command, the Houston was awarded the CIA Meritorious Unit Citation.

Commander George Wallace retired to the civilian business world in 1995, after twenty-two years of service on nuclear submarines.

Commander Wallace lives with his wife, Penny, in Alexandria, Virginia.

Greedy dictators can emerge anywhere on earth

On high land or high seas, independent thinkers must fight for the moral, higher ground. Contemporary battle and modern government come in many forms. The authors create some interesting characters and creative dynamics. Fiction? Reflection? Possibilities?

I received an ARC through "Severn Publishing" and I a voluntarily leaving an honest review.

This story begins with the meeting of two Souther American presidents. One is from Argentina and the other is from Brazil. They have laid out a plan to make themselves more important. At their meeting, another person shows up that they were not expecting; he was from China. All three agreed to make their countries more important and reduce the USA's standing. This plan would have them taking over other South American countries.

At the same time this was going on, a CIA agent TJ was attempting to kill or capture a rouge agent that was involved with what was happening in Argentina. He had received a tip nd laid an ambush. Things did not go well with this. He would later call for help from the U.S. and he was supplied with a Seal Team. This seal team was made up of members from various unit and the leader happened to be the son of the Naval Intelligence head. In addition, his wife was also a foreign agent who became aware of information that had a major impact in stopping what was going on in South America. One more piece of the puzzle was the fact that the "George Mason", a submarine, was in the area and what they found was relayed back to the Pentagon. With what they found, they believed that their mission would be changed, but powers that be wanted them to act as if nothing really happened. Luckily, things would later change for the better.

To learn what exactly was going on in those two countries, what the information the Seal team leader's wife found, what event changed the way the U.S. responded in South America, then you need to read this book! The ending is great and you won't be disappointed.

Action-packed addition to The Hunter Killer series!
Wow, Southern Cross kept me glued to my chair – I started reading on my phone when I was away from my Kindle. Even when I got back home where my Kindle was, I kept reading on my phone for some strange but unknown reason. Having read the previous eight books in this series I’m convinced this was one of the best, if not the best. There are so many elements to this story, of course the submarine action was excellent, but I wasn’t expecting some of the political machinations sprinkled through the story. Regarding political intrigue, pieces of the story felt like they might describe the current situation in a few places in the western hemisphere – read the book and see if you agree. Speaking of unexpected revelations related to characters, those related to the Ward family were an interesting touch. If you have been reading this series, you owe it to yourself to settle in for a mesmerizing session of reading. If you are new to the writing of Wallace & Keith, get a copy of Final Bearing and before you know it you will not only be reading Southern Cross, but you will also be deeply invested in the characters well before you start Southern Cross. I received an Advance Reader Copy of Southern Cross from the publisher and chose to provide my review.

An interesting book on naval warfare. This is my first book on submarine warfare set in South America. The story has many threads which are delicately woven together to create a fascinating story. We have a peasant who becomes a rebel joining the resistance movement against the existing Argentinian government, a SEAL operative hunting for his past nemesis in Argentina, the presidents of Argentina & Brazil plotting a new currency to upset the global economy with Chinese support whose only interest is to secure their raw material, a corrupt American President and of course the submarines and naval forces of Chile, Argentina, Brazil and USA. Phew! That’s really a broad spectrum of plots within plots. However, the focus is on naval warfare, especially submarine wars where we are given a detailed description of how the submarines work, their armoury, their commands etc. We are also flooded with plenty of Naval acronyms you lose track of after a time The more interesting aspect is the description of South America as well as the Magellan straits. These places rarely find mention in fiction books. Overall an interesting book

The premise of Southern Cross was intriguing, especially considering the Manchurian candidate in the White House and the belief that the next superpower encounter will be at sea. The fact that China is becoming heavily involved in South America increased interest. However, the story becomes a bit improbable with the actions of the Secretaries of State and Defense. As lax as our “free press” has become, it is difficult to believe that someone would not have discovered the Administration’s ties to China and exposed them. I received an ARC from NetGalley, and the opinions expressed are my own.

Another winner

Excellent storyline which again portrays the USA Navy Seals and submarine service doing the job they are trained for,to carry out their duties as assigned from the President and his advisors to meet force with force and ultimately keep the bad guys from killing innocents by being more professional and using their training to kill them before they can kill the innocent civilians of this world.

I received an advanced reader copy of this book for my honest review. This is the ninth book in a great series. The action keeps the reader guessing and wanting more. The series should be read in order so that the reader gets the full story of the various characters. I can’t wait for the next book in this series.

Loved the book and the political intrigue. I rated it a 5. My major issue on the book was the significant use of the Argentine, Brazilian and Chilean names of ports, ships and cities/towns. As I am not very familiar with South America and it's languages, I often had to stop to figure out which country was shooting at who and where! Otherwise, a great book. Keep them coming.

Down under Subs

Very active reading. Constant changes that all inteeplayed. Multiple plots and actions that all came together perfectly. The international intrigue was most surprising. The extrs, su beenrprise event regarding POTUS was neat. Reminds me of current Politicians.

Better Read - Liked the plot management better

Definitely a better read. At least we were able to hold our own with the technology, for a change. Was not crazy about the Texas President being a Chinese bribe/agent. I could see California, maybe New York. Definitely Delaware, Chicago, Illinois, and/or New York, Arkansas, but not Texas.

Too realistic for words, based on current events. The characters are believable and well developed and integrated in the storyline. The book series is well researched by authors whose original careers would have exposed them to the issues they are writing about.

4/5. China tries to gain influence in South America (and a source of lithium for electric car batteries) by backing an economic and military alliance between Brazil and Argentina. Those countries blockade Uruguay and attack Chile, all while no one, including the United States, does anything.

excellent

As with all books in the series the ending is fairly certain. With that said the suspense and how well the book is written to reflect most current times makes it easy to absorb oneself.

Enjoyable read

However, we need charts to follow the movements of all the pieces here. And a couple of new characters. Jim Ward is getting too old to be an active SEAL and his dad by now has to be a Vice Admiral.

This book is a must read for today’s policy wonks. The scenario is as scary as it is possible. Ego, money and policy come together to forge a thriller. Will the good guys win ? Who are the god guys?
