A cozy mystery set in a cute little Italy town in California. I was more invested in the characters than the story, I really liked Terza and Moheenie. They were a great pair and loved their friendship and antics. I also really enjoyed Terza's Italian family. I have been fascinated by food trucks and catering lately, so getting to read a cozy mystery set around that was great! On the mystery side of things, it was pretty good but I felt was very easy to solve. I actually was confused at first because it couldn’t be that easy, but it was. It’s more of a following the character trying to solve the mystery rather than trying to solve it yourself. I am intrigued by the characters as well as the possible romance triangle to see who she winds up with and the next mystery. (3.5⭐)

Terza Tiapolo, the curious caterer with the alliterative name, finds herself up to her meatballs in mystery when she finds a client dead on the day she’s supposed to cater a party for him.
Helping her are her best friend and employee, Moheenie, as well as Moheenie’s husband, Ranger. But surely the handsome detective assigned to the case can handle the job, right? Well, yes, he can, but Terza and Moheenie love reading murder mysteries, and now they have a chance to put their solving skills to real-life use…if they can keep out of the detective’s way.
What a fun story! I so enjoyed getting to know Terza and her friends. Plus her family! What a loving, boisterous Italian family in the heart of San Diego’s Little Italy. Plus there’s a hint of a potential romance, too!
This is book one in a series by author S.K. Derban, and I can’t wait for more Macaroni on Wheels mysteries!
I received a complimentary copy of this book, but my opinion is entirely my own.

Case of the Bayfront Murder was the first book I have read written by S.K. Derban. Coming off of some intense suspense novels, this was quite the change of pace for me. The Case of the Bayfront Murder is a cozy murder mystery, and it's my first time reading one. It reminds me of Aurora Tea Garden meets the family dinners on Blue Bloods. It was an easy read and fairly enjoyable.
The character development was good. I did find myself wanting a little bit more. I hope the series builds on that a little bit more. I loved the friendship between Terza and Moheenie. Their love for murder mysteries finds them in the right place at the right time to try to solve a real-life murder.
The storyline kept on pace, but at times it was a little hard to keep focus, and I found myself putting the book down. It didn’t quite hold my engagement as much as I would have liked. This would be a good book for a vacation. The setting was great, I felt like I was walking through Little Italy.
The relationship between Terza and Conner is a friendship turned budding relationship. He ends up on an expected trip and leaves, so we don’t really tie that relationship up. But hopefully, we will get more later on in the series.
S.K. Derban did have faith in the book. Though not quite as intertwined as I would like to see. The last chapter does focus on Terza’s relationship with God. But it is more of an afterthought and only one chapter. The Christian aspect was more of an afterthought.
*I received a complimentary copy from the author and voluntarily chose to review it. All opinions are my own.

CASE OF THE BAYFRONT MURDER by S.K. Derban
The First Macaroni on Wheels Mystery
Terza Tiepolo is known for her catering company, Macaroni on Wheels, her love of family and friends, and her love of mysteries, as proven by her membership to a mystery book club where she's always on top of their monthly whodunit competition. Arriving at a client's home to cater his dinner party she finds his murdered body! Though sad at the death of her client Terza sees it as an opportunity to really put her sleuthing skills to the test. With her best friend Moheenie by her side she'll search for clues as she prepares for the week's catering events. And if that provides more contact with the tall, dark, and mysterious Detective Garza, so much the better!
Terza Tiepolo is a delightful protagonist. She's witty, caring, and smart. She is also quite young, so I find it a bit disconcerting that she's lamenting not being married at 23! I appreciate her relationship with both family and friends. It's a joyful celebration as they make it a point to gather together to eat and play on a regular basis.
I liked the mystery and how Terza and Moheenie go about solving it. The mystery was well plotted with an ingenious murder. While Detective Garza is certainly swoon worthy, I really got a kick out of Jacob Radovan, the Medical Examiner.
One thing I could have done with less of was the religiosity. There's a description of Terza reading her bible every morning before calling her mom, although I admit the question and answer section that followed with her dad was cute. However, an entire chapter, albeit a short one, quoting the bible and praising God was a bit much for me. It seems that public praise of God is fundamental to the author's personal life, so this is a natural offshoot for her. I'm grateful that it's not preachy, but I wish she would have been more subtle incorporating her religious praise.
With droolworthy descriptions of Italian delicacies CASE OF THE BAYFRONT MURDER is a lighthearted mystery combining family, friendship, and that delicious food with a puzzling murder. Pass me a slice of that Sartù Di Riso then join me for a rousing game of bocce ball, and don't forget some gelato while I wait for Terza's next mystery.

This is an easy read. Loved the splashes of Italian BUT all the mention of italian foods definitely made me ponder eating italian foods....... late at night, that was a bit harder. LOL
As a review of the plot/storyline, there were parts that I had a hard time "believing" that would happen in the real world so the credibility of what's written then can be filed under: this is a work of someone's imagination of how it would occur in the Macaroni world of mystery and it's a cute read that sometimes highlights the idea that a girl is still chasing love (in between noising her way into sleuthing a murder) and will use her girlie-ness to get what she wants.
I wanted to read this and I have, for that I am grateful it was gifted to me so I could. Thank You.

Overall, I give this book three stars. There were parts that were cute and funny, but other parts that I didn't enjoy.
The dialogue is stiff, formal, and on the nose. It frequently felt like the author was speaking to the reader and telling the reader things the author thought they should know rather than allowing it to come from the characters organically. Instead of switching to pronouns, the characters' names were overused in the narrative.
I didn’t like the sex talk or the drinking.
I wished there had been a big climactic scene between the killer and the sleuth. It felt more like the detective solved the case, rather than the amateur sleuth.
There was a lot of focus on the catering business and on the food they were making/eating.
The family dynamics were cute. I liked Terza's family.
The romance was sweet, though I thought it was odd that the detective would be snippy with her and flirt with her during the same conversation. Also, I didn’t like Connor pushing Terza to let him come to her apartment.
Overall, it was humorous and interesting. I thought the murder weapon was a unique choice. I wish it had more suspects and more mystery elements for the reader to try to solve. The catering company, Macaroni on Wheels, is a cute name, but doesn’t really make me think of Italian Food. Also, I would have loved for the story to go back to the mystery book club and maybe finish there.

MY THOUGHTS -
Well this book was a hoot! It was like taking a little vacation, a vacation from heavy detailed reading, a vacation to Little Italy, San Diego, California. A simple, easy going "cozy mystery". But what this book lacks in suspense and action, it certainly makes up for in fun and character development.
This was more like the life and times of Terza with a little bit of mystery thrown in, which was very enjoyable. A little Italian cutie, she was a fun character to get to know. She seemed like a real sweetheart. I loved the interactions between her and her best friend Moheenie. They were quite a fun pair. Those two got a little bit too excited and we’re having a little too much fun with their amateur sleuthing! I also really loved and appreciated the relationship she had with her family. It is the same kind of relationship I have with my own daughter.
Preparing for a catering gig the two of them just happened upon the murder of one of their clients. Of course sticking their noses in where they truly don’t belong… We get to see a little bit of fun, mischief, and maybe… a little bit of romance?
But with all that is going on there is always a lot of cooking! It is based around a catering business after all. I thought the cooking parts were a lot of fun to read about. BTW, I have never made risotto!
While I do typically like a little more suspense, angst, heartfeltness (I know that's not a word, I made it up) but... this book was a lot of fun and like I said - it was like taking a vacation to Little Italy. I think I would love to read the next book in the series to see where it takes Terza and Moheenie (and I have to find out about Terza's love life!).
A huge thanks to the author for sending me a copy of this book to read and post my honest thoughts.

Case of the Bayfront Murder – A Macaroni on Wheels Mystery by S. K. Derban is a delightful, present day cozy mystery! The young protagonist, Terza, runs her own catering business, is from a lovely Italian family and enjoys her murder mystery book club. Enjoys murder mysteries so much that when one of her clients turns up dead she manages to insert herself into the investigation! Miss Marple would be so proud!
The story is interesting and cleverly written. The characters are very likeable and easy to be with! One of my favorite lines is from Terza’s father when speaking to his daughter, “did you talk to your Mother today? Did you read your Bible?.” A subtle but effective hint of how important Christianity is to Terza and her family.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book! I recommend it to everyone who enjoys a mystery, cooking, eating, friendships, family, good writing, good editing and just a good clean book with a good story!
Can’t wait for book #2!

A cozy mystery murder! Terza is running her catering company and can’t help but feel the pull of the mystery the murder delivers. This is filled with great friends and family. She is surrounded by great people. And a great best friend to encourage her snooping. It also had a fun romance element. Terza and Nico had great chemistry, and it came off the page extremely well. But there was also Conner! What’s a girl to do? A mystery with a side of who to choose romance. It was an enjoyable read, for sure.
Just an FYI: religion
There were quite a few religious aspects. I am not a religious person. I felt it was easy to get past. Religion is a big part of some people’s lives, and that’s ok. The last chapter was solely god- or religion-based. It just didn’t feel like it had anything to do with the story. It’s inconsequential. However, this is not a dealbreaker for me.

LIght, simple, Italian family oriented mystery
The Case of the Bayfront Murder is the first book in the Macaroni on Wheel Mysteries and it will be my last. Although the cooking part of the mystery, for a foodie is drool worthy, I’m afraid the story, plotting and writing leave something to be desired. It’s just a little too “Nancy Drew-ish” for my adult taste. Our heroine, all of 23 is very young, too young to spend the entire novel lamenting being single. The story spends most of it’s time centered on our heroines family, and their family gatherings, and although her family seems fun, it’s all a bit much and adds nothing of any substance to the storyline. Also a bit much is the constant mention of God, daily bible readings, and if she’s called her mother. Not that those are bad things, but, it’s not what I desire in my murder mysteries. I would safely recommend this for a much younger audience.

The Case of the Bayfront Murder was a fascinating and fun read. To be introduced to Terza, her friends and family made me feel like I was part of this family. It was very cozy. S.K. Derban brought us great characters in this book and placed them into our local San Diego backdrop. I loved that! I found myself thinking about the main characters in between my reading time. The situations were intriguing and having a helping of great food from MOW Catering service added another dimension to the fun story. I enjoyed the book 100%.
Waiting for the next read to see what will happen next…

Case of the Bayfront Murder by S.K. Derban is the charming first book in the Macaroni on Wheels cozy mystery series. If you’re a fan of food cozies with lots of character development, this is for you!
I don’t have even the tiniest bit of Italian DNA in my body, but when I read cozy mystery books with Italian families, I wish that I did! They always seem to have weekly meals with every family member (the ones who live close enough to go!) and several friends. The meals are lively and include delicious foods (of course)! And people don’t leave after they eat. They stick around and chat or in our main character Terza Tiepolo’s case, they play bocce ball! I love that game! This feeling of family and friends can be felt throughout Case of the Bayfront Murder.
This delightful cozy mystery introduces us to Terza Tiepolo, owner of the catering company, Macaroni on Wheels. Her company is right next to her parents’ market, Tiepolo Mercato, in Little Italy, San Diego. This is another thing that gives this cozy mystery its familial charm. The author brings this area to life with her descriptive language. You’ll feel as if you’re cooking right along with Terza and her best friend while in the catering kitchen.
This cozy mystery has a slower pace; however, it gives the reader a chance to mull over the clues and solve the mystery right along with the characters.
I absolutely recommend Case of the Bayfront Murder! I think that cozy mystery lovers will enjoy getting to know Terza, her family, and her friends! This cozy mystery is filled with charm, well-developed characters, a lovely setting, and a fun to solve mystery!
I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book. All views expressed are only my honest opinion.

This was a fun read! I liked Terza and Moheeni. They were a fun pair! I did think that the author used all of their names a little too much, but that didn’t pull me out of the story too much. I look forward to seeing how this series develops!

It was a very interesting, and suspectful, fun mystery. It has some twist and turns. It's a page turner. It's well written and has a good storyline. It has enjoyable characters.
It kept my interest. It kept on my edge of my seat. I look forward to the next book.

A beach read with characters who resonate makes this murder mystery a fun read. I couldn't figure out who-dun-it until the end. The cast of suspicion is small enough to keep score and large enough to keep the reader wondering. I read this because I liked author Derban's previous book, "For No Apparent Reason" and because it takes place in San Diego's Little Italy, just seven blocks from my condo in Bankers Hill. Although way more modern and hipper than just a decade ago, Derban gets the vibe of old Little Italy that is still there for the looking (such as Sundays at Our Lady of the Rosary Catholic Church, the bocce ball court at Amichi Park, and the longtime paesanos at a table in Piazza della Famiglia or on the sidewalk in front of Caffe Italia). Take a break and cruise through "Bayfront Murder". I look forward to the next installment of this trilogy.

Case of the Bayfront Murder by S.K. Derban is a charming cozy, slow-burn mystery and the first book in the Macaroni on Wheels series. The story also includes a romantic side story between protagonist Terza and her two love interests who are actively involved in the murder investigation.
The story is full of vibrant, relatable characters—none more so than protagonist Terza Tiepolo, owner of the catering company, Macaroni on Wheels. Her catering business is next door to her parents' market, Tiepolo Mercato, in Little Italy, San Diego. From the onset, readers can sense the close relationship Terza and her family have. Their dialogue is loving, hilarious, and sometimes over-the-top, as you’d expect from an Italian family. The author also does a wonderful job bringing the Little Italy area and San Diego streets to life. There are many descriptive scenes where Terza is walking in the area or to her condo that will delight readers. Derban gives the vibe of an old Little Italy with Sundays at the local Catholic Church and residents playing bocce ball at the local park with family and paesanos. Anyone who has been raised in a traditional Italian family or had close Italian friends growing up will relate to all of this and feel heartfelt nostalgia.
It should be noted that the story does include several mentions of religion and bible studies, mostly coming from Terza’s father. The last chapter of the story, in particular, with its religious sentiments, felt a little out of place for the conclusion of a murder mystery story. Fortunately, it doesn’t detract from the overall enjoyment of the story.
There are several clues presented throughout the story that assist in solving the mystery. If you pay close attention, most of the twists are somewhat predictable, but they still remain entertaining and satisfying. Even though this is a murder mystery, there are no gory details of the murder scene. Just enough imagery is given to depict the murder, and then the story quickly moves forward into the investigation! It definitely gives the feel of a family-friendly cozy mystery, perfectly aligning with the characters and setting.
Narrator Mallory Fuccella does a fantastic job narrating this audiobook. She brings all the characters to life with unique voices and personalities, making the story very compelling and easy to listen to. Her narration is also very well paced, and her dramatic effect, whether it be at the initial murder scene or in Terza’s later encounters with the suspects, is very well placed and captivating!
If you're a fan of cozy mysteries with well-developed characters, vibrant settings, and a dose of romance, then you’ll definitely enjoy this book. The overall charm of this book and its characters are memorable and will have you eagerly anticipating future books in the series!

It’s been awhile since I’ve delved into a cozy mystery and what better place to start than the beginning of a new series! Case of the Bayfront Murder is the first novel in the Macaroni on Wheels series. Macaroni on Wheels is the catering company of tenacious Terza Tiepolo, who works with her best friend and in the same building as her parents, food being the center of the family business. She also belongs to a murder mystery book club and is shocked when she finds herself in an actual murder mystery. It’s an interesting premise that takes her on a crazy adventure.
I quickly got Nancy Drew vibes as I got into the story. Terza is the Nancy of the story while her best friend Moheenie is the Bess character. Honestly, this parallel endeared me even more to the story, which I was thankful for as I did not really jive with the writing style, especially at the beginning. I also felt like there was a ton of unnecessary details and could’ve used more editing to tighten up the flow. Getting lost in the mundane details made many parts feel sluggish, which was disappointing but not as disappointing as how far-fetched the narrative was. There is no way a police investigation would be so blasé, so you do have to forego reality while reading.
What I really enjoyed about this novel was the characters. How can you not love Terza and Moheenie and the Tiepolo family! I enjoyed all of the family dinners, and the close-knit relationships give a very wholesome vibe and balances the novel quite nicely. It is a very cute story even if it is very predictable and borders the unbelievable. I am looking forward to seeing where this series takes us next.
*I have voluntarily reviewed a copy of this book which I received from the author/publisher through JustRead Tours. All views and opinions expressed are completely honest, and my own.

Case of the Bayfront Murder is the first book in S.K. Derban’s A Macaroni on Wheels Mystery series. It has a cute cover and held my interest throughout. Set in Little Italy in San Diego, the story has amateur sleuths, detectives, several clues, plenty of red herrings, even a murder board, and of course, there’s a murder to be solved!
Being Italian myself, this book hit the spot. I could taste and smell the food, hear the clash of the bocce balls, the waves, and the words spoken with love in Italian. There’s family and friends, jobs, God’s presence, and some potential love interests for caterer Terza Tiepolo. There’s also lots of food and deliciousness throughout.
Terza and her friend, Moheenie, who also works with Terza, are forever getting into trouble, and they are in a mystery book club together. They work well together and have an incredible bond. Terza also has her parents and siblings, a cute niece and nephew, and an endearing cat. What’s not to love?
There are twists and turns to the story, along with a few chuckles. Terza is always one step ahead of the detective on the case, Nico, and seems to feed him information that the police haven’t even uncovered about the murder scene and potential suspects. There’s closure, having the murderer revealed, and I look forward to reading the next book in the series. There are two delightful recipes at the back of the book, and I plan to try them.
Case of the Bayfront Murder is a nicely paced, cozy mystery with many clues to sift through while enjoying time with family and friends. Sit back with a glass of wine or a cool, refreshing gelato and try to figure out whodunnit!

Case of the Bayfront Murder was such a fun read. It started with the name of the catering company - Macaroni on Wheels. How fun is that? Terza and her friend Moheenie were a perfect pair. One impulsive and bold, the other the reality check yet still a bit curious and brave. They balanced each other just right. Add in Moheenie's husband Ranger and the trio is just tons of fun.
Terza's family is close - both in proximity and between members. I love that her mother and father know her well, expect her to live well, and ask her daily if she has read her Bible. While the religious aspect is not high in the book, that small bit really adds a lot to the background that is felt throughout the read. Terza's family can walk to each other's homes and businesses. It just sits well for it to be situated in Little Italy of San Diego.
I enjoyed the process of Terza and Moheenie trying to figure out things with the murder that occurred and how to do them without tampering with evidence and without getting themselves in trouble. I often found myself thinking "Oh, don't do THAT." But, they did it anyway (why don't book people listen to me?). It turns out fine in the end and the murder was solved. I enjoyed walking along with them as they explored ideas and people and motives.
While it is a murder mystery, there are no gory details or twisted, overly grotesque descriptions. It is clean and light and just the right words to keep the reader in the story without the unnecessary exploitation of imagery.
Definitely a fun read and I look forward to the next Macaroni on Wheels Mystery. Who knew I'd ever say that?

"Well, we can't automatically become detectives because it is a fun thing to do," Terza told her. "Let's be content with solving the murders in our Murder Mystery Book Club, okay?"
"I guess." Moheenie sighed. Her demeanor suddenly brightened. "No, really, I am happy doing what we do. You're right. We can be detectives by solving book crimes instead of real-life ones."
"I think it's safer that way, too."
Terza loves being a caterer and having her best friend help her serve up meals only adds to the fun. While they consider themselves to be amateur mystery book solving sleuths, they truly did not plan on becoming crime solvers. Until they find one of their clients has been murdered. How can they help but ask a few questions? Being curious is not a crime. Or is it?
What I loved about this book was that the plot did not only revolve around solving the murder. Terza's best friend and her husband play a prominent role. So does her parents and her loud and enthusiastic Italian family. One should not be hungry while reading this book as many delicious dishes are described. I wish that I could find a caterer like Terza to cook for me!
A dash of faith is a part of the storyline, so is a bit of romance. After all, the detective with plenty of magnetism might still be single. Solving the crime is only the side dish. And the culprits may or may not surprise you. I definitely enjoyed this cozy mystery with plenty of Italian flare. I can't read to read the next book in the series.
I was provided with an advanced copy of this book. I wanted to read and review it. All opinions are my own.

I really enjoy "Cozy Mystery" novels. The Case of the Bayfront Murder by S.K. Derban is the latest in this genre that I have read. S.K. Derban is a new to me author and I LOVE when I come across authors that I have not books from before.
WOW, this book really intrigued me from the first chapter. The story takes place in Little Italy of San Diego. The main character is Terza Tiepolo. She enjoys 2 things in life, Cooking and Solving Mysteries. She is involved in a local Murder Mystery Book Club and she also owns a Catering Business. Her excitement when she gets hired for a BIG event on the Bay is radiant. The book gets really COZY when she Catering assignment turns into a Murder Mystery. She instantly wants to help solve the Murder Mystery and her best friend and Mystery Book Club member, Moheenie and her husband Ranger also help with the case. I LOVE the relationship between Terza and Detective Nico. I truly LOVED this book from beginning to end. It is filled with Family, Friends, Mystery, Romance and Faith. I HIGHLY recommend this book to anyone who enjoys "Cozy Mysteries" and Romance! GREAT BOOK!

This was a fun and funny mystery in a wonderful setting – San Diego’s Little Italy. The writing brought this place to life and I felt like I was on a little vacation as I was reading. The cover looks like a vacation and the author makes it so in her story!
I love mysteries featuring best friends – especially best friends like Terza and Moheenie that get into all sorts of situations. Terza's big family was entertaining as well. I saw one review that said the family dinners reminded them of the dinner scenes on the TV show Blue Bloods and I thought this was a great comparison!
There’s a hint of romance for Terza sprinkled in and I am hoping that is explored more in future books.
The mystery was straightforward so the story didn’t feel that action packed, but the characters really stole the show. It was fun to watch them interact and work through the mystery together. I’d love to see the whole gang back together again in future entries to the series!

I really enjoyed this murder mystery. I thought the characters were lovable and relatable. I also thought the mystery was well done. I thought the author did a great job of giving us enough twist that we weren’t 100% sure who committed the murder and why until everything was revealed. I thought the story was well written and I would read more books by this author with these characters. I also liked that it was a cozy mystery and that you felt good reading it and had fun while reading. I definitely would recommend.
I received a complimentary book from publishers, publicists, and or authors. A review was not required and all opinions and ideas expressed are my own.

Case of the Bayfront Murder is a fun read combining a cozy San Diego mystery with delicious Italian food.
Terza Tiepolo, a murder mystery fan, owns Macaroni on Wheels, an Italian food catering company based in Little Italy. When she discovers her client's body sprawled on his kitchen floor, she and her best friend Moheenie spring into action to find the killer. This first in a series has a cast of wonderful characters: a close-knit family, a handsome detective, suspicious next-door neighbors, and mouth-watering Italian food - recipes included!

Brisk and energetic new cozy mystery featuring two enthusiastic amateur sleuths!
Case of the Bayfront Murder is the first book in author S.K. Derban’s Macaroni on Wheels Mystery series, and it is a unique debut story for a couple of reasons. With its pair of very enthusiastic amateur sleuths who get involved just because they want to, and a faith-forward foundation underlying the plot, the book offers fresh perspectives on the cozy mystery genre.
Terza Tiepolo, the owner of a catering business called Macaroni on Wheels, and her BFF and coworker, Moheenie Brickman, are the two amateur sleuths hot on the trail of a murder mystery. When Terza discovers the body of her catering client dead on his kitchen floor, she and Mo immediately agree they must conduct their own investigation into his murder. It’s not that they feel the detective assigned to the case is lame. In fact, it’s quite the opposite! The truth is, it’s just because they’re in a murder mystery book club that they adore and are proficient at guessing who-dun-it in the books they love.Terza comes with a lively Italian family that gathers for a weekly Sunday dinner with all the siblings, spouses, children, and any stray friends. While Mo is married to Ranger, a San Diego lifeguard, Terza is still unattached, and the attraction to Detective Nicolas Garza is keen from the start. Another viable romantic interest is DEA Agent Conner Reeves, but as of this book, he’s firmly stuck in the friend zone.
The plot is well-paced, with the murder occurring early on and the women’s investigation starting the very next day. Terza is aggressive in her approach to digging up information, which both benefits and harms her. There are a couple of good suspects to consider and rule out, and the final resolution makes sense. I really enjoyed the women’s ingenuity and creative stretching of the truth and cover stories about what they were up to, which made for some fun and anxious moments!I recommend CASE OF THE BAYFRONT MURDER to cozy mystery readers who enjoy a fun, light story with a faith-forward foundation.

I was drawn to the title of this series. Macaroni on Wheels sounds like something I need. I enjoyed this book and the fun family.
