Another short but fantastic book from Magnus Mills. This one is about sailing and features similar characters to his other work. A man visits somewhere new where the regular characters all have some odd quirk. He meets a woman who never quite takes to him. And it’s never quite resolved. Although it’s the same familiar themes as always, it’s another great story and I enjoyed it very much.

Perhaps it could have been longer. But I think Mills always likes to leave some mystery, more so since he’s been self publishing.

Magnus Mills’ latest novel,The Encoragement of Others (2024) is, as always, a laugh-out-loud quirky joy. It concerns sailing, specifically a new design of boat; two pubs, The Black swan and The white swan; a rock band who never get around to playing and a host of the usual extremely odd characters….

Typical Mills, with all his usual elements present. Highly intriguing set-up, so really want to know more about 3.5 Stars rounding down on its own, but will probably increase after sequel(s)... ;o)

As others have said, it has the usual quirky Magnus Mills characters, and in places it’s quite amusing, but overall it’s a pretty feeble plot and doesn’t really go anywhere. It’s a short story at a not so short price and I feel decidedly short changed.

A typical Magnus Mills read. Quirky and off beat.
