Updated with helpful facts and tips for international travelers, this new third editions of Learn Spanish the Fast and Fun Way is suitable as language teaching book for adults as well as for older children. It instructs beginners in the basics of reading, writing, understanding, and speaking Spanish. The book lightens language-learning routines with cartoon-style illustrations, language games, and puzzles. A set of vocabulary flashcards and a small staple-bound bilingual dictionary booklet are bound into the book's spine and can be easily removed for supplementary use.
I zipped through most of this book before a trip to Mexico and found that I remembered a lot of what I had learned/reviewed. There's just enough repetition to learn words, the stories are funny, there's enough blank space on each page to practice writing what's being studied, easy pronunciation guides appear under a lot of the words and the answers to all the quizzes, exercises and puzzles are at the bottom of each page (instead of at the back).
I don't know that this would work for someone brand new to Spanish, unless they really stuck with it over one length of time, like a month. For anyone with at least a year or two of Spanish under their belt, this book represents a fun, colorful way to solidify and expand on your vocabulary and ability to speak. There are flashcards in the back, maps of Madrid and Mexico City, and a handy, albeit small, removable dictionary.
With all the book/workbook choices out there to learn a language, Barron's usually falls in the above average/way above average category.
