Cadence Denton has worn many hats over the years—retail sales rat, dental assistant, fulltime mother, part-time cheer coach, and dachshund wrangler. You could say her cup runneth over. You could. She won’t. When she’s not chasing runaway dachshunds, you can find her at her desk devising ways to make her characters suffer.
Her current series include: The Immortal Firewalkers, a dark vampire saga with a twist; Wicked Palate, a tongue-in-cheek paranormal series based on a supernatural cooking network, and The Magic Bus, a YA time travel series.

If you like your vampires all sparkly and fluffy-bunny like, this is not the book for you. However, if you are a fan of classic vampire lore with violence, passion and bloodshed (like me), you’re going to love this book!

Devin is on a mission: to purge and destroy the vampire responsible for the massacre of his family. He’s part of a secret group of vampire hunters and will stop at nothing to find his sisters. That is, until he meets Jeanette.

Jeanette is not your ordinary vampire and in fact, she’s ascended from the Ancient Ones. Deemed a traitor to her race for the extinction of the Fecund (soulmates to the Firewalkers), she’s carried the burden with her for centuries.

In a moment of weakness after a brutal battle, she tastes the blood of Devin and her world is turned upside down. He’s her salvation; she just needs to convince him of it. Little does Jeanette know that her true enemies are not human but those she’s trusted for hundreds of years. Can she survive their betrayal and hold onto Devin or has she doomed them both?

In the same vein as Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Denton takes the vampire legend and kicks it up a few notches. Detailed action scenes, viciously evil vampires hell-bent on violence and passion, deep betrayal of Jeanette by those closest to her and a swoon-worthy romance between Devin and Jeanette are what make this a fabulous book. The ending was a hair disappointing but I’m hopeful Denton is close to releasing a sequel.

If you’re a fan of Paranormal Romance and looking for a new spin on Vampire Romance, read this book! It’s gripping, graphic and violent so I’d also recommend it to fans of Game of Thrones. What more could you want?

Favorite Character:

Devin. I love his honest reactions to not only Jeanette and the other vampires but realizing he’s destined to love the one thing he despises. He’s an alpha male on all accounts and I swooned several times.

Favorite Quote:

“Liquid flames lapped at the vampire’s skin, the fiery maelstrom causing her hair to fly about her head like a steel-colored nimbus, turning her body into a living tiki torch.”

My Rating: 4.5 stars

There is a whole lot going on this book. At times so much that I felt lost. The concept is a good one I liked who the female lead turns out to be. The language was a bit of a problem since I wasn't sure if they were speaking french, creole french or just southern bad english.
I think the author was just getting her footing and the next in the series will be much easier to read. I look forward to reading more!

This was a tough one. The author used a lot of words that needed a Glossary at the end. Descriptive words, to say the least, but there were so many sprinkled throughout the story that it made the book somewhat jumpy. My least favorite was Fecund, descriptive of a human with special blood.

ok

Couldn't really get into it. It was a little slow going and the language was part English and something else. Just didn't find it that interesting
