Set before Everlasting, the addicting start to the Night Watchmen Series, The Gramm Curse is a novella told from Jaxen Gramm’s perspective.
How far is one willing to go for love?
Before finding a love that shakes the entire foundation of his world, Jaxen Gramm only had his Witch, Jezibelle Beaumont, to worry about. He’s her Hunter, and he will do whatever it takes to keep her safe from the curse placed on his bloodline, even if it means keeping her far from his heart.
But when a spell is offered that has the power to remove the curse, temptation clouds the ethical judgment of the Gramm brothers and their Witches.
In this action-packed novella, enter the dark recesses of Jaxen’s mind as he battles with himself over a decision that could not only cost him his life, but the life of fellow Coven members. Reunite with Gavin, Cassie, Mack, and Jezi as they dance around the dangers of a civil war on the brink of beginning.
Candace Knoebel is a hopeless romantic with an affinity for whiskey and good music. Her love of words began when she met the boy who lived in the cupboard under the stairs. She's a self-proclaimed Lost Girl. Words are her mirror.
With two completed series, her work ranges from paranormal to contemporary, all centered heavily around romance.
Currently she lives in Florida with her husband and two children, and has just completed her thirteenth novel, The Taste of Her Words.
The Gramm Curse is a prequel novella to Everlasting, the first book in Candace Knoebel’s Night Watchman Series.
I really enjoyed this book. It’s a great story, but it’s the characters that make it stand out for me. The book journeys into the mind of the dark and brooding Jaxen Gramm before he meets heroine Faye Middleton. Jaxen is a compelling character who takes everything his volatile life throws at him, and holds onto enough integrity to make him really likeable.
The Gramm family is cursed. While their peers fall in love with their affinity partners, the one Witch or Hunter destined for them, the Gramm Brothers must choose between falling in love and condemning their Witches to death, or hardening their hearts and dying themselves.
Jaxen has no intension of watching someone else die for him, so he keeps his witch, Jezi, at arm’s length and does his best to turn off his emotions. He does this very well, until a demon hands over a spell that could lift the curse and his brother Gavin insists on trying it.
Now Jaxon must open himself to possibilities and disappointment, and recognise how important he is to those around him. He is also forced to be honest about his relationship with his witch for the first time, before being thrown into a crisis that will turn his world upside down.
Jaxen is the perfect blend of bad boy, with moral code. He worked his magic on me in Everlasting, so it was great to be able to get inside his head in the Gramm Curse. I say read it, but if possible, read Everlasting first!
Candace Knoebel’s, The Gramm Curse was an amazingly fast read. Like her previous novels, The Gramm Curse does not disappoint; it is fast-paced, well-written, and above all from Jaxen’s prospective. Oh how I loved getting to feel his struggles not only with his curse and Jezi, but also with his draw to Fay Middleton. I feel that I am very fortunate to have read this after book one and two, of The Night Watchman Series, and not between book one and two. I believe if I had read The Gramm Curse between books one and two; it would have taken some of the mystery and excitement away from book two, Evernight. I wholeheartedly recommend reading this novel, for Jaxen Gramm is a character worth knowing on the personal level, like Fay Middleton, but only after book two that way none of the twist and turns of Evernight are spoiled.
It seems that Candace Knoebel gets it right every time she writes! I have yet to come across a single flaw in any of her writing, and I am awed every time I pick up one her books, because she has this spellbinding way of drawing her readers in to the adventures she creates.
After reading Everlasting I was thrilled to hop into Jaxen's mind and read this book. I'm a huge Jax fan! In fact, I'm a huge Gramm brothers fan. Gavin and Jax will melt your heart. They did in Everlasting, but after reading this book I love them so much more. Gavin is fun, and seems to be the type of guy who's always smiling. Jax is the brooding type. He holds the weight of the world on his shoulders and is always trying to make everything better for everyone else because hopefully that will take away his problems. The interaction between these to was a beautiful thing to see, and there was no doubt how much they meant to each other. I still love how they settle things with rock-paper-scissors.
It was great to get more of a feel for Jezi in this story. I didn't like her all that much in Everlasting, but my heart broke for her more than once, and this book proved why. Unrequited love has to be one of the hardest things to deal with, but having a curse of death hang over it only makes it that much worse. She was determined in her need to have Jax love her, even knowing what it meant if he did. In fact, each character was so driven by the curse on the Gramm name, that they were desperate enough to take the word of a demon, if only it meant there was a way to lift it. But, who can trust a demon, right?? I certainly wanted to, for everyone's sake, and my heart was in my throat waiting to see if they'd finally be free.
At least, no matter what happened with the spell to break the curse, Jax was finally set free. So was Jezi. Because he was finally able to open up to her completely and admit how he truly felt. It was a bitter sweet moment that changed everything for them. It was also a dark moment that saw all of them, Gavin and Cassie as well, with blood on their hands and nothing to show for it. It shattered my heart because I wanted so much for them.
This book was a thrilling, action-packed read, with plenty of heart ache. It was a great set up for Everlasting, and it explained so much of what was hiding behind those gorgeous eyes of Jaxen Gramm. I loved every second of it!!
I love, love, loved Everlasting, the first book in The Night Watchmen series and all that goes with it. The action, the characters, the magic, and more importantly Jaxen Gramm! *sigh* And when I found out that Candace Knoebel was going to give me a novella from his point of view I felt like running all over town spreading my extreme joy about this momentous news, but the fact that I hate to run left me just squealing and fangirling in the privacy of my very own living room.
And the fangirling didn't stop once I got my very own copy either. In fact it just got worse. This novella gave me everything I wanted, JAXEN! Yes I know I say his name a lot, but trust me when you meet him you will totally understand my obsession and you too will be repeating his name. Jaxen! *shivers* Sorry, on with the review!
The Gramm Curse takes place before Everlasting and actually does an incredible job of filling in everything that happened before we are introduced to Faye Middleton. And boy is it a shocker. When Candace Knoebel wrote The Gramm Curse she wasn't just giving us an insight into Jaxen and what goes on in his head, but she was giving us a true insight into what is going on in the story. This definitely is not one of those novella's that acts as a filler. Oh no, The Gramm Curse is a must read addition to The Night Watchmen series! It gives us answers and gives us so many more questions.
But finally we get to see some of the truth behind Jaxen's stand offish personality and why he pushes people away. I hurt for him in Everlasting, but The Gramm Curse just made me hurt more. I loved Jaxen before, A LOT... but after reading this one, I am even more in love and am ready to admit that I am a Jaxen addict! So, Candace Knoebel can I please have some more???

OMG, where to start?! Well, The Gramm Curse is set right before Everlasting. You can read them in the order you’d like, but in a way, The Gramm Curse made me understand Everlasting better, just as Everlasting made me understand The Gramm Curse better. Not making sense, am I? ;-) As you may know, The Gramm brothers have a curse upon them. If they fall in love, their loved one dies. If they don’t fall in love with their witch…. They die. With me so far? What if you got a remote shot at finding a cure for the curse? What if you got a sliver of chance for reversing it, so nobody had to die? Would you take the chance? How far would you go to try and remove the curse? That is the dilemma Jax, Gavin, Cassie and Jezi finds themselves in, and the consequences reverberates a long way into Everlasting and beyond. I loved that The Gramm Curse was from Jax’ POV, it gave a unique insight into his mind, how he thinks. In a way he is a martyr, sacrificing himself for Jezi, so she will live and he will die. In reality, he is running from everything, closing himself behind walls so thick it will take someone very stubborn to crack them – Jezi isn’t the one to do that, but that is another story. I don’t want to reveal too much about what happens in this book, because if I say too much, I will spoil something from Everlasting. But I love how Candace ties everything together, that we get to see everything from Jax’s POV, the action, the moral dilemma the group is facing, and how their decision affects people around them. There are deceit, love, hope, crushed dreams, desperation, decisions to make and the fall out to deal with. If you loved Everlasting, the Gramm Curse is definitely for you!
The Gramm Curse gives us the oportunity to get into Jaxen's mind. His mind could be describe as a secretive, obscure, depresive place but not for me. I think his mind is only the reflect of a young man trying to hard to cope with an awful curse and what looks like an inevitable destiny.
Set weeks before Evelasting this is a fast, action packed and engaging novella. We can read about the endless tension between Jezibelle and Jax. We witness some good fights against demons and learn more about this amazing world.
I really liked how the author manages to capture the sadness in him. She really creates a character that is real without being annoying or too depresive. You can feel her sorrow, his struggle to find the positive in his situation and the how hard he is hit by Faye (even for a moment).
The writing is really good and the dialogues are entertaining. The timing and pace is perfect for me, summing all to create a really good paranormal novel.
I think you can read this book before or after Everlasting. So if you like NA or YA paranormal you should read this one.

I was asked to beta read this story by the author and I was thrilled with the opportunity to do so. I enjoyed the beta read so much I purchased the ebook when it was released. Fans of YA Paranormal should enjoy this read.
The story features the two Gramm brothers, Gavin and Jaxen, but focuses on Jaxen's struggle to deal with the family curse and the feelings of his affinity partner.
Candace has created a unique would of Hunetrs and Witches who become affinity partners and their fight against vampires, demons and other baddies of the paranormal world. The interesting twist is the family curse dooming the brothers and their loved ones. This novella is a prequel to the recently released Everlasting. You get more of the background story of the Gramms and their lives here. I can't wait to see what comes next and I hope I get the opportunity to beta read again!! I could see that Candace took my suggestions and comments seriously. It was a pleasure to reread the finished product!!
A brilliant & thrilling start to a new YA series. It's told by Jaxen Gramm, he is a Night Watchman & they are each paired up with a witch, Jezy is Jaxens witch. Together they kill vampires & demonds & protect their sector. But for Jaxen & his brother, life isn't that easy, there has been a curse on there family stating if the Watchman & Witch fall in love one will die, & Jaxen isn't going to let that happen to Jezy. On a hunt a demon mentions a spell to break the curse & this is were Jaxens world changes. It's a really interesting read, the characters are great. It's exciting & it catches your imagination from the star. A very well written book. I'm very happy I found this & can't wait to read the next one .
I was given a copy of this for an honest review for PRATR. I give this book 5 fangs. Jaxen Gramm is cursed. The curse on the Gramm line brings new meaning to the idea that love can kill. When Gramm falls in love the person they love becomes destined to die and if they manage not to fall in love it poisons their own bodies. Jaxen’s witch partner is in love with him and instead of loving her back he blocks off his emotions and acts like a major jerk. But when a demon says he knows of a way to break the curse Jaxen gets pulled into trying by his brother, his brother’s witch and his own witch partner. But when the task goes horribly wrong all hell breaks loose and nothing in Jaxen’s life will ever be the same.
This is a great story. You get to know Jaxen a little bit more in this novella. Candace is such a brilliant writer. She has my heart with this character. Love the Gramm brothers. Cannot wait to read more. i highly recommend this to everyone!!! Get your copy now!! Amazing read!!!!!
Jaxen needs cuddles! So many cuddles! The poor guy! My heart just broke for him! I love him even more now. And I love Weldon even more now too :) I love that I got to see a bit more of him. The bromance these two have is awesome. A great addition to the series. Bring on Evernight!
