This is a great way to jump into keeping chickens. The author gives a great overview of why you should keep your own chickens, as well as how. She covers breeds of chicken (and ducks)-with pictures, housing, feeding, natural health (covering common diseases and , using your produce(eggs feathers, compost), and there's a great chapter about chickens and permaculture.

Reading this book gave me a little more confidence about my idea to keep chickens so that my family had a nutrient-rich food readily at hand. We had thought we would need to move from our urban home to have these lovely birds but this book helped give me enough information to see that keeping chickens is practically a no-brainer. More people should consider this bird as a pet. (Many major cities allow keeping chickens!)

Great book for the beginner chicken raiser! I leaned so much about the basics, and feel more confident that my girls will be fine as I dig deeper into my research.
